Young French Marquise in Exile in Lausanne, 1789, gouache on wove paper by Jean-Baptiste Mallet, French, 1759-1835. National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., USA.
Only a few remnants of her wealthy former life can be found for this lady in exile with her children.
A student of Pierre-Paul Prud’hon, Mallet showed a delicacy and brilliance of brushwork and attention to detail. This is a deceptively intricate painting with the battered furniture and prison-like walls.
