no okay somehow paradoxically,, after posting that i actually feel Less intimitated by being active?

its like. most of my problems with being active come from having days where my brain literally cant bring itself to have enough energy to respond to people, but then i feel bad for keeping them waiting. then whenever i think about writing i just think about that fact, so i just Feel Bad whenever i think about writing. which then makes me. have even less energy for it-

but then like after i posted this i realized people would probably understand after finding out why, and most wouldnt be upset and stuff. which then made me feel Less bad, and so more comfortable with writing, so i want to be active again??

Dan Heng couldn't help but facepalm at the display in front of him. Did Stelle really care that much about him being there that she would perish and turn to dust if he didn't come with her this instant?

The way she seemed to gain the mental state of an overly excited puppy was indeed quite annoying, what happened to starting a normal conversation then calmly asking the other person if they'd like to spend time together? Despite the fact he could never be truly upset at her, he thought he at least had the right to complain in his mind.

Though, it wasn't fully her fault either, having been immediately introduced, and promptly recruited, to March's similar brand of chaos right after waking up in her new life. Yes, it really was all March's fault, as she was also the one who left him to deal with this, while she was out there having fun lowering the monthly Express budget.

Dan Heng waved Stelle's hand away, sighing, before standing up.

"That's really on you for being unable to entertain yourself for even a few hours. But I'm aware I never had an option to refuse you."

oh, he didn't! come on, that's not fair. with a furrow of her eyebrows, she crosses her arms, sticking out her tongue at him. she could just call the bluff right now and end it– but what fun would that be? so instead, stelle gasps over-dramatically once again, pressing her hand against her chest as if she's offended by what he's saying.

❝ oh, cruel world! ❞

the declaration is, somehow, even more dramatic than before, as she pretends to collapse to the floor in a faint. she can feel pom-pom's exasperated eyes on her even from where they probably are in the parlour car, and she can't help but snigger at that.

❝ but march is out, ❞ she whines, pouting. is it endearing or annoying, the way she acts like an annoyed toddler? maybe a combination of the two. ❝ and i'm lonely! ❞

in the best impression of march that stelle can possibly muster, her eyes grow big and shiny and she blinks at dan heng a couple of times like some sort of anime character.

❝ plus... ❞ she pauses for dramatic effect, before pulling out a bag from behind her back and shaking it vigorously at dan heng in a manner that's meant to be welcoming, but is honestly a little violent.

❝ we brought your favourite snacks! and you can choose the movie. come on, please? you wouldn't leave me to be lonely, would you? ❞

Dan Feng listened as the other spoke, explained and joked cheerfully. He would never understand how Baiheng always acted so... silly and childish, that was a way to put it. But that was simply the way she always was. He supposed he didn't have to understand in order to enjoy being around her.

"I'm glad your trip went well." That meant both 'I'm glad you had fun' and 'It's fortunate you didn't cause property damage of some kind'.

"And, well, there was a ceremony at Scalegorge Waterscape recently, and another one next month. Later this week, I'm meant to be recieving messengers from other ships," he explained. Vidyadhara were generally secretive about their affairs, it'd never been standard practice to just prattle on about cultural duties to anyone who asked. But, well, it was Baiheng. It was pretty certain she wouldn't do anything harmful with that knowledge.

"The Council of Preceptors insisted I stay home to prepare for it, so, really, I'm not supposed to be here with you. Though I believe they're overexaggerating, spending a little time with you will not suddenly make me the least capable High Elder in the history of the Alliance."

"Really?  That's fantastic.  Dan Feng, thank you.  She was aware that the High Elder rarely smiled, therefore it was uncommon to see him do so, especially when they were around their friends.  As they strolled to Aurum Alley together, she gave him a smile.  When it came to casual talks, he was more of an observer and listener, but he was always the first to speak when the subject of politics and battle plans came up, drawing everyone's attention.

 "Yes, despite the fact that the entire planet is a deep sea ocean. But they were not kidding when the people said it would take eons to explore the whole ocean. Still, it's a vibrant planet filled with life and the people there are very friendly." I didn't cause trouble over there, so don't worry if I did, you will hear a complaint from the sky-faring commission." She chuckled." So what has the High Elder been up to?"

the thing about these guys is. they will have serious internal monologues of 4+ paragraphs. about the past, the present, their companions, the things that scare them and things they hope for, the meaning of life and the universe itself, at someone asking how their day is

and then their response dialogue will just be like 2 words

Dan Heng was, at this point, used to the noise and chaos that often filled the Express. Mainly caused by Stelle and March, he could never understand how they had so much energy. Though living with them was something he'd always choose over being alone, that didn't mean it was wrong to appreciate the rare calmness with only the older crew there.

He was pulled out of his thoughts by one of the mentioned troublemakers startling him out of a book he was reading, turning to look at Stelle unamusedly, despite, or maybe because, this had already happened countless times before. He sighed, though not really that annoyed. Simply being mildly disappointed was more so just something he found himself often doing when it came to her.

"Yes, yes, how could I forget..."

Despite himself, Dan Heng fought back a small smile.

"Hm, that depends. I have before, and I could do it again. You and March would be fine with each other's great company while I read."

Of course, he currently had no reason to refuse. But he also knew that, by now, they'd all learned to read each other well enough for her to know that.

so far, it's been a perfectly normal day for dan heng. stelle and march have gone who knows where, himeko has offered him coffee twice and welt is absorbed in the television ( and trying to find his glasses, which were on his face ) once again.

well... perhaps normal used to be the right word for it. according to the system time, it's around the evening now, which means–

oh, dear. stelle is back, and bursting into the archives with a huge, mischievous smile on her face. ❝ dan heeeeeng! ❞ she calls out, hands on her hips. ❝ it's movie night, remember? march will be back later — she wanted to go shopping, or something — but you get the utter pleasure of my company. ❞ she gasps dramatically. ❝ you wouldn't turn me down, riiiight? ❞

Dan Heng responded without even having to think about it. He didn't need reassurance about that fact. He'd been the first person to truly know of it, and, for a long time, the only. If he'd relied on others' views on him for the sole proof, he'd have lost himself a long time ago. And yet, still...

"Thank you."

Then, after a pause:

"As I said, you shouldn't fret about it, General. I believe you did do all you could, the past is just... unfortunate in many ways. All of this was, and still is, bigger than us both."

It was a strange feeling. The thought that Dan Heng had had somebody trying to look out for him in a sense, thinking about him, wanting to help him, before he'd even hatched. He hadn't even had to show how different, better than before, or useful he could be. Even though it hadn't really been "for Dan Heng", as he hadn't existed in any way resembling himself yet, he still... wasn't aware that someone had already cared back then.

He hoped Jing Yuan could tell he appreciated it, even though he'd always been terrible at body language and tone. He didn't think he wanted to bother the General by actually speaking out any more of his thoughts. As if the other's reward for saving him from rotting away in prison then letting him come back to the Luofu was listening to him ramble on about the past he himself said he wanted to move on from. Even this was probably too much.

It wasn't fine and Jing Yuan knew this. But what's done is done. Dan Heng mecrifully grants him some grace.

The general dips his head in apology regardless. He's done enough harm to the young Nameless already. Even if it wasn't on purpose.

"You're still you," he argued. "Dan Feng is gone. You showed me that. Whether you have more or none of his memories does not change who you are."

It took him a long time to realize that the High Elder he knew was not the person standing before him. But once he did, he saw how stubbornly his heart was trying to cling to what was familiar, thus losing sight of what was before him.

"However, you still have my apologies that I did not find and put a stop to Lingsha's master's actions sooner. They were suspicious of me back then and I was not permitted to visit and told me even less of your condition."

Once Dan Feng was gone and only an egg remained, Jing Yuan did not get to see the new Dan Heng until much later in his life.
