A “wet style” means keeping hair in place until it dries and sets there. 2. Thermal styling, like with a hairdryer, accelerates and strengthens the bonds that form within the hair when it sets. These bonds are much stronger than most styling products. 3. Thermal styling “seals the cuticle” which means each hair strand is smoothed out, leaving a shiny surface. This kills frizz. It happens a bit after the hair is already dry. 4. Except for doing buzz cuts, haircutters don’t learn lengths and numbers. Haircutting is very complex and it takes years of studying and practicing to develop a working understanding of it. 5. It’s not a client’s job to learn haircutting terms to ask for a haircut. It’s the barber’s job to get down to earth and find out what the client wants. 6. We don’t strap clients into our chairs. That is to say, if you’re going to the wrong haircutter for you and you can’t seem to get what you want, go try another chair. It’s easier on you and on us if you find a better fit than to sit skeptically in our chair. 7. YouTube and Instagram are unsurpassed for offering inspiration, but when you get into the right chair those sources can’t touch personalized expertise. They can show you how 1, 2, and 3 work for YOUR hair. 8. What one client craves in a service, another client wouldn’t be caught dead getting. A good barber or stylist will probably specialize, which means if it’s not good for you, it’s good for someone else. 9. If someone is busy or expensive, they’re worth it to someone. That won’t guarantee that it’s worth it for you, but it may be worth trying, and remembering number 8 if you think it’s a rip off. 10.
