Now, say what you want about that Renfield movie...

... but at least in Germany it had the perfect cinematic release date. It was released today. On 25 May. Exactly when R. M. Renfield has its very first mention in the Dracula novel.

The movie is okay. Entertaining. But this release date is perfection.

back on my bullshit about Renfield

because I watched it again

The story is so carefully crafted without being overbearing. We get all the things used in the resolution in the first five minutes, but there aren't any annoying flashbacks to Important Clues You Might Have Missed. I love that.

Renfield's fuzzy self care clothes and orange wall paint! Nicholas Hoult and Awkwafina wear roughly the same amount of makeup! I'm in love with them both.

During the confrontation between Dracula and Renfield in Renfield's apartment, it's like Hoult and Cage are acting in two different movies: Hoult is doing the vulnerable and sincere thing while Cage is doing the campy horror thing. But that's the point! It's literally the two parts of the movie colliding, where they are kind of kept separate otherwise. The comedy on Renfield's side of the movie never becomes farcical, whereas, while we do get bits of humanity sprinkled in with Dracula and the Lobos, they are never allowed to cross over to the "human" side. It's fucking brilliant.

The fact that MCR made “Vampire Money” in response to Stephenie Myer asking them to make a song for Twilight makes it so fucking funny that they let Renfield use “Na Na Na” for a car chase scene.
