Headcanon: Atsushi can only fall asleep when he’s either completely exhausted or when he knows he’s safe.
He rarely got a good nights sleep growing up. Something that carried over when he was abandoned to the streets. He’d walk for hours despite having no energy hoping it would tire him out enough.
The first true good night sleep Atsushi had was during a game night with the Agency. Dazai was in the middle of antagonising Kunikida when Atsushi slump forward.
Luckily he only lightly head butted Dazai’s shoulder.
But he didn’t move.
Dazai was going to ask what was up and then noticed Atsushi was knocked out. He got everyone’s attention and Ranpo deduced it was because Atsushi was exhausted.
Kunikida made a note to make sure Atsushi wasn’t overworking himself (hypocrite.) While Dazai attempted to gently pry Atsushi off him. He froze when Atsushi cried out and clung to Dazai’s arm. His whole body shaking with fear.
Ranpo’s grin left his face, he took off his glasses and simply gestured for Dazai to stay.
Dazai frowned but did so. Running a hand through Atsushi’s hair and reassuring him he was here. It was a relief to them all when Atsushi calmed down. Make an adorable chuffing sound as he did so.
Kunikida questioned what was happening and Kenji said he seen animals on the farm act like this. Ones that were injured or had been mistreated by others would act on edge.
But when they found others that made them feel better they’d act more like themselves.
And stick to the others like glue.
And the Agencies were Atsushi’s glue, his safety.
A blanket was wrapped around Atsushi and in the end they all had a sleepover in the living room of the dorm building.
Because after that none of them could bare to leave Atsushi alone right now. And Atsushi had the best sleep he’d had in years.

AU where Dazai can also turn into a cat
Dazai still can use NLH, but he can't control his cat transformations that well
Every time he's about to transform it feels just like he's about to let out a huge sneeze, so most of the time he starts running away with a very constipated-looking face
Only Oda knows Dazai is the cat. Everyone else thinks Dazai just has a menace of a cat
If Chuuya wants to touch him he has to pay with BLOOD (just lots of scratches)
If some mafia executive or Mori annoy Dazai they suddenly find their clothes and/or chairs covered in lots of cat hair
One moonlit night cat Dazai runs into a big white tiger in a forest
After learning that his tiger friend is a boy that routinely gets locked up in a basement he starts visiting him, esp on the full moon nights
Atsushi sees that this cat is smart but he kind of just assumes that all cats are that smart
The tiger is very protective of the kitty fren
Atsushi mentions once how purring cats can help pain of healing bones so whenever Atsushi is injured Dazai lays over his chest and purrs to make him feel better
Natsume doesn't know Dazai is a cat and Dazai doesn't know Natsume is a cat so they'll just be sitting together in the bar side by side thinking 'I bet this cat thinks I'm a real cat....'

These are bits of a draft of a draft of a draft.
Thanks to @eijunes and @tsuwuko for answering my question! Have a drabble each as promised!
“Did you dislike them?” Atsushi blurted, twisting his hands together at the small of his back. “The dahlias I gave you last year.” Dahlias in white. Atsushi had wanted to convey his appreciation the most. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
#1 White
Dazai’s eyes shuttered. His body became oddly inexpressive. Dazai was generally in motion, fluid in his movements and wild gesticulations, so the instances where he was still called for attention. A frown wrinkled his brow.
“I’m not used to such gestures, it’s all.” Dazai glanced away, and after a contemplative pause, he said in the quietest tone, “No one had any reason to do that before.”
“I’m grateful that I met Dazai-san,” Atsushi said, marveling at the rare color in Dazai’s pale cheeks. “He keeps giving me reasons to feel this way.”
#2 Red
Atsushi gave the deepest bow and said, "He can be an unruly child, don't you think so, Oda-san?"
Dazai’s steps slowed until the grind of dried leaves quieted.
"But don't worry! We're taking good care of him." Atsushi smiled at the headstone. A breeze whistled past, sounding a bit like a laugh.
Satisfied, he caught up to Dazai, and studied the frozen line of Dazai’s back, hoping he hadn't overstepped.
Dazai turned with an inscrutable look. He raised a hand.
There were times when Dazai's mind was a secret code.
Atsushi shivered as Dazai's touch ghosted over his ear. His breathing faltered when Dazai tucked something behind it.
"Easier than words." Dazai stared. His hand lingered. Then, he strode off.
Feeling around his ear, Atsushi brushed against petals. His cheeks warmed up. His heart thrummed. In his palm, a dahlia in red.
