Use POWER START For More Purposeful and Effective Meetings
The POWER acronym stands for:
Purpose – What is the overall purpose of the meeting? Why are the participants gathered together for this purpose?
Outcome – What are the desired outcomes? What will we achieve during our time together?
What’s in it for them – Why are the invitees invited? What will their participation achieve in service of the purpose and their own needs?
Engagement – How will you prepare the participants before the meeting? How will you engage and keep them engaged during the session? How will you follow up on what is discussed and agreed?
Roles & Responsibilities – Who will lead the session? Do you need a timekeeper and someone to capture outputs? What role do you expect your participants to play?

During 2020, I’ve been engaged in several larger transformations in Indonesia. Most companies focus on creating digital innovation. To achieve this, they create new ways of working and structures to become more agile. Agile is the ‘engine’ to create new products on services.
One of the biggest challenges I see in all these transformations is bureaucracy and policies. Over time, enterprises build all sorts of control mechanisms. I’m always wondering why they need them, but the unfortunate thing is: most people don’t wonder about that. Maybe because it creates work for them, because they like checking boxes or they’re afraid to touch them?

555 Days of Agile Coaching from home
Over the last 555 days in Singapore, I have learnt to accept that most things are out of our control and we have to adapt to changing and challenging times. Working from home wasn’t easy to begin with when everyone is at home and we require dedicated spaces and devices to work on. Managing kids online classes, homework and keeping them occupied was stressful when I had really busy work days.

To be honest, I think there are way too many coaches in the world. For years, while walking around the IT industry in the Netherlands, I saw the market getting flooded with agile coaches. At meetups, 50% of the people were agile coaches. People left their jobs to become agile coaches. And I always thought: why do we need them?
Based on my experience of doing a lot of agile training and consulting over the past few years, I do see why they are required. Scrum masters get caught in the politics of their companies. Product owners struggle to understand their role and say no to stakeholders (who are often superiors). Team members have very practical questions on how to plan and estimate, how to prioritize, etc.
