Ritcher left school after 10th grade and became an apprentice as an
advertising and stage-set painter, before studying at the Dresden Academy of fine arts. In 1950, his application for study at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts was rejected as “too bourgeois”, He finally began his studies at the Academy in 1951 when he finally got accepted.
Ritcher married Marianne Eufinger in 1957, she gave birth to his first daughter. He married his second wife, who was a sculptor called Isa Genzken, in 1982. Ritcher had two sons and a daughter with his third wife, Sabine Moritz after they were married in 1995.
Gerhard Ritcher is known for the diversity of his approaches to painting. His practice can seem to be structured by various oppositions, with paintings after photographs countering abstract pictures, traditional still-life’s alongside highly charged subjects, monochrome grey works and multicoloured grids.
His work are very multicoloured and brightly coloured paint on plain sightseeing photos with a layer of paint to make the photo more interesting.
Ritcher often seems to scrape the surface of an abstract painting with a knife, or the wrong-end of the brush, but occasionally he also takes a knife and cuts into the top layer of paint, and then peels off some of the top layer of the painting. This makes the picture stand out from normal photos because it makes his audience double take the image to be blown out their mind with the work.
