For this final’s art project, I definitely decided on making a mosaics art piece. Obviously I don’t have access to glass so I used construction paper as a substitute.
However, I stumbled a bit on my idea for a picture the bits a pieces could make. I decided to go with a music theme mosaic. I used different music notation and added a heart to the treble clef. I also used a violin and a microphone to symbolize my main instruments in music.
After I finished making the main elements of the art work, I definitely knew I wanted a rainbow kind of background around the music elements. I started doing it, but then I started having what I like to call “a picky perfectionist moment”. I kept looking at the colors and avoided trying to put two of the same color in one spot. I wanted it to be a messy rainbow of colors, but messy is not my strong suit and sometimes it irritates me. So I gluing the paper before mixed the rainbow papers and dropping it on top. Wherever it landed, that’s where it was gonna stay. Being raised as a perfectionist has some ups and downs, challenging in my everyday life. However, the way I created this piece was to show that I don’t need to be so perfect to make something to beautiful.

After the destruction left behind in Europe from WWII, immigrants started making their way to the new world, New York. Jackson Pollock was aware of the European traditional way of using a model or a sitter for an easel painting. Pollock wanted more freedom in his paintings and started abstract expressionism, his signature style. He increased his art freedom by moving out of the city to a secluded area in East Hampton, Long Island. Pollock had a barn on his property that became his art studio; he made all his paintings on the floor. He was against titling his paintings and instead numbered them so no one could interpret his meaning behind his work
2. I made this art work using my figure skate (don’t worry I made sure it was cleaned after), marigold flowers, and different types of paint mixed together.

The art work I chose was the shamisen, it is located in the musical instrument section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The shamisen is a lute type instrument made out of wood, cloth, and skin. It has three strings that are traditionally made out of silk but are now more commonly made out of nylon. The main body of the instrument is squared with rounded edges with a long thirty inch neck and three long black pegs at the top. The front of the square part of the instrument is white while the back of it is a type of bronze brown; the long neck is a coffee brown. The way the instrument is played is by using a bachi, a special pick for the shamisen. It’s played for tea ceremonies, Japanese theater, and special events. It is presently being taught in Japanese schools today.
The shamisen is definitely emphasized; it’s shape and form is definitely an eye catcher. While the scale is extensive, it is well proportioned to maintain a 2.8 pound weight. The weight of the instrument is heavier then a regular lute but lighter then an adult cat. I have longed to play this instrument for sometime now. When I first saw the shamisen in the museum, it made me feel more connected to my culture. The excitement it created made me feel up close and personal, even my two friends, who accompanied me to the museum, saw I couldn’t contain my excitement as I adored the shamisen with stars in my eyes.
While the Japanese shamisen was perfected in Japan, it was originally influenced by the Chinese lute, the sanxian. It was introduced to Japan in the 16th century in the Ryukyu Kingdom, which is now Okinawa. In 1875, it developed into the Japanese shamisen that is played today. Many blind Japanese people played the shamisen to make a living. There was no recognized movement in the shamisen, unless you wanna count them playing it as a movement. The instruments is featured all over Japan and in different world medias. Besides the music, it’s also been featured in different movies, documentaries, books, mangas, and anime’s like “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba”. I chose this instrument because of how it can be expressive in many musicial genres. In Japan, they are used in anchor music, rock music, etc to make a unique sound.

1. Balance: it’s an accomplishment that uses opposing forces and influence to create equilibrium.
Ex: Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh [1989]
Directional Forces: It’s the way an artist want a viewer eyes to follow exactly
Ex: In “The Wizard of Oz”, Dorthy looks head to see where the road leads to. Google maps too for when we use navigation.
Emphasis: An area where artist put more focus on
Ex: In an artwork by Vik Muniz, “The Orchid and Three Humming Birds, the artist put more emphasis on the flower as it is the main eye catcher.
Subordination: An area that has less attention from the artist
Ex: The humming birds in the same art work was the subordination because it had less focus and takes a bit to find them
Repetition: Making a pattern in art works.
Ex: When looking at a music sheet, while the notes may not repeat, the set up for a music sheet is. Staffs are a repetition cause they keep repeating going down a song until it comes to a stop.
Rhythm: It is a orderly fashioned tempo for artists to follow.
Ex: Music always has a rhythm with its tempo.
Scale: Size comparison of one thing and another. Ex: shoe sizes
Proportion: A ratio relating to a part to a whole. Ex: Pizza
Variety: It is a mixture. Ex: A Rubik’s cube
Unity: It sticks to thing. Ex: Hersheys chocolate kisses

3. An experience I have with how color affects me come from from favorite animation studio: Studio Ghibli. The color schemes used in the different movies the studio produce, works together to showcase that color. An example of a color showcase with aesthetic is in “The Secret World of Arrietty”. When you see the garden from Arrietty’s perspective, you can see some of the plants and insects have colors and we probably don’t see, but then again it’s anime. It’s soothing and calming when I look at the why the animation company uses the colors for these different movies, makes me feel like I’m actually part of the story itself. The style and color is also recognizable to any watcher.
4. As a performer, I love the process I go through when I learn a musical. This was from last fall semester’s production of “Into The Woods”. While I wasn’t happy with the role I got, I grew to love it and I eventually made the character, Milky White, my own character and made her more sassy and funnier. This was a funny moment during the earlier stages of production that got a laugh out of everyone.

I have a sakura tree art by Anton Wang hanging on my wall right above my vanity. While I do not know the backstory of the painting, it looks like it was either made as a print or painting; The painting is the one one and can not be found anywhere else. It’s a beautiful painting, to me, looks like a window over my vanity with sakura trees outside; it give me the feeling as I am really living in Japan and I get to wake up to a beautiful scenery each morning.
3.
My age is nineteen and the gender I primarily align with is female. While I was born and raised in Bradenton, Florida, my ethnicity is Japanese, Cambodian, and Vietnamese. Singing, dancing, figure skating, and playing the violin are what I love to do for fun and even plan to make careers out of it; I’ve been doing them all my life. I am currently just in the college ensembles and I do not work. What make me uniquely me is me is my multi talent skills: singing, dancing, acting, figure skating, violin, modeling, piano, composing and songwriting, karate, kung-fu, gymnastic, and video editing. What also makes me unique is my happy and cheerful personality along with my kind heartedness and helpfulness. I will display my comedic side when I want to see people smile.

18. Hokusai 1823-1829 The Great Wave off Kanagawa, from the series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Color Woodcut, 10” x 15”.
1. Although the painting was meant for a wave, it’s also meant to hide stratovolcano known as Mount Fuji.
2. Hokusai “painting” is actually a woodblock print, Hokusai was a painter but really best known for this woodblock prints.
3. The art piece is not purely a Japanese style and was influenced by European works by the use of the Prussian blue.
4. The print inspired a music piece called The Sea (La Mer) by French composer, Claude Debussy.
5. The wave is no tsunami and is just a rough wave. Scholars Julian H.E and Hisami Nakamura studied the print and made this claim , it was “a plunging breaker”.
It changes how saw the painting from the elements to how it inspire other works of art. At first I really thought the wave was a “tsunami”, while it is called “The Great Wave” it doesn’t always mean a tsunami. Along with knowing now that it’s woodblock print and not a painting, Hokusai really made the the print look powerful. Now as I look at this print, I know that there’s more to it then saying it’s “Just some Japanese painting” because it’s not a painting and it has a meaning and story behind it.
