We live on 8th Street and we are an orchestra. Hence the name. Back in 2010, Gary Murphy thought he'd create a space where his kids (and hopefully others too) could play a sort of band music that wasn't for money or acclaim or prizes or school marks but just to play for people for no other reason but to play, and he wanted something more flexible and fleet of foot than a traditional community band , something that would give them a firm groundation in the roots of jazz culture, and something with an infectious fun that would brighten the day and put a bounce in people's steps and give the kids the experience to be part of a music that had some real meaning. So far, it appears to be working ;)

A bit of nostalgia from 2013, cleaning up the OLD bandcamp page for the Eighth Street Orchestra, adding links to the MODERN bandcamp page and website, and just for fun, in case there are young musicians out there who wonder if they are too young to start a jazz band!The recording and photo are taken at our debut at Toronto's Grossman's Tavern, March 24, 2013.
We'd been in Toronto for the school March Break and of course thought we'd do a bit of busking in Kensington Market where we were spotted by members of the New Orleans Connection, the Sunday residents at Grossman's. They suggested we "drop by and play a set."We left Toronto for Owen Sound quite late that night.
We’re pretty much Toronto based these days; the curious can catch us live on the 11pm set at the amazing Drom Taberna on Friday, August 23 2024!
