This are notes extracted from my presentation.
Where? Online Festival, in partnership with the Design Musuem.

Who? The founders of the festival are Dr. Scholze, Dr Urlich and Dr. Midal. The design film festival has 5 core partners which they collaborate with to produce the Design Film Festival. The film festival itself is curated by one of the partners, Kingston University MA students.
What? The festival screens 21 films throughout the event. A selected jury chooses the finally 21 films to be screened from the 200 submissions. The shorts films shown are either films made by designers or films based on design.
This festival gives a great opportunity to demonstrate the importance of design in films.
The Schedule:
The Design Film Festival begins with an opening speech from the three founders of the festival alongside three main short films. After the opening night they release two new short films every day.
What Events?
The film festivals USP is shown through each series of events allowing the narrative of film and design to expand. Frank Greys talk was specifically about how experiences can either be immersive or cinematic or both. Giving an example of this being seen within physical spaces, using projection and inner spaces.
These are the notes I gathered from the talk.
Cinematic experiences can be seen and used:
Based on environmental factors
The medium of the film
To have a sense of storytelling
Creating physical spaces
An Immersive experience can be seen and used:
Uses the senses
The space of concept
Artificial surroundings
Can be used as an art form
Physical Spaces:
Robert Barkers purpose-built 360-degree panorama 1793 - ‘Paronrama 1793’ - “ Panorama from greek translates to ‘pan’ which is (all) and hormam which is (view).
Louis Daguerre’s Painting ‘Holyrood Chapel’ derived the diorama for this Paris Theatre. Using paintings as visual elements of the story.
A painting can immersive you in the same way as a cinematic experience. From the environment, structure and narrative colours it holds.
Brighton Aquarim, Eugenis Birch, 1827. The new space at the time, using gaslight and creating theatre elements.
Projection:
Projection is possible because of the projector.
The greek art of lights and shadows Athanaive Kircher, 1645
“A cinephile of ingredients for the projection” - A magic lanten. - The magic lantern becomes a storytelling image in 1890.
Screen X (2015) - A 270-degree panoramic view - the use of five projectors. A multichannel.
Video and sound installation - Bill Viola - ‘Fire women’ - an non-narrative experience.
Inner-Space:
An inner-space experience of ourselves, by ourselves - like reading a book.
Peep shows
Stereoscope - 1861 - The sterograph (or steroview)
Kinetiscope, 1894 - A single person 35mm film viewer.
Moving image at home - 1955 - television
Mobile devices
Virtually reality.
All of these notes look at how an experience can be manifested in a film festival.

CineCity
CineCity is Brighton’s film festival founded in 2003 by Tim Brown and Frank Gray and is held annually in November for two weeks. In those two weeks, they host a film programme based on a variety of worldwide film previews, premieres and installations throughout Brighton venues and also explore the archive of cinema.
The tag ling of  CineCity is ‘ Adventures in World Cinema’. Tim Brown my module teacher for the course explains how they build a strong connection with the film and venue taking the audience on its own adventure.  An example of this was in 2009 ‘Dive-in Movies’ when they hosted and re-imagined the prince regents swimming pool as its own cinema. The event showed many scenes of swimming pools from archive films, and the guest was immersive in the experience by turning up in 500 bathing suits!
Taking this on board and exploring how a immersive experience can lead the audience in their own adventure, how can you incorporate this into your own film festival?
My next blog will be looking into the book called ‘Coming to a festival near you’

06.10.20  History of Film Festivals
The first class from the module, film festival, focused on the History of film festivals.
The first film festival was hosted in 1932 at Venice by the President of Biennale, ‘Count Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata’. Now 80 years later it is known to be the oldest and most prestigious film festival included as one of the ‘Big Three’. The festival is now held annually in September open to the public and accredited visitors.
The following film festival was held in Cannes, France in 1946 after World War II, it was planned to start in 1939 however ‘Hilters’ invasion caused a horrific disruption in Europe. In 1946 was the beginning of the Cannes Film Festival known for being the most elite with only the celebrity guests being invited. The festival's audience is all genres and begins annually in May.
Alongside the big three film festivals is the Berlin International film festival hosted in Berlin, Germany called ‘Berlinale’. It is open to the public attracting thousands of thousands of people from all over the globe. It began in 1951 at the beginning of the cold war allowing people to see it as the start of the free world. Today it focuses on the cinematic exploration of the film in social issues and is known to be the most political film festival.
There are another two famous film festivals held in Toronto and Utah. In Utah, the festival is held annually in the winter months of January, open to the public with a focus on documentary scenes and short films. Starting 1985 they have helped many independent films gain recognition for their films and allowed them to reach a wider audience.
In Toronto, their international film festival is called Tiff. It is a five-day festival held in September attracting thousands and thousands of people annually. Tiff focuses on short films in a wide range of genres looking at the most engaging for the audience.
In my next blog I will be looking into ‘Cinecity’ Brightons independent film festival.
