UUUUGGGGGH. I did my annual(? idk) revisit of the Magisterium tag, and these books could've been so good. And famous, maybe. And have a big fandom. But they're not too good. And don't have a big fandom. They could've been so much, but it just feels like the authors got bored with it throughout, and AAAAAGH

Wait why was this overlooked?

Like, why did this frankly trauma inducing incident basically serve no purpose other than to make up a way for Call to know how to defeat Alex? I’m not a writer, but I feel like there could have been so many possibilities with this if it happened earlier in the book (s).
Call already gave himself an evil overlord point system/list when he thought he was just Constantine. Wouldn’t this make it worse or something?
There could have been things like:
Identity crises
Trauma (plus acknowledgment )
Runaway/rouge Call
Evil/corrupted Call (?)
character development
bonding
healing
feels and angst in general
I just feel like this should have had more significance or been mentioned more in the book.
Anyways that’s another Magisterium idea I thought about :D

Has anyone read “Insignia” by S.J. Kinkaid?  If not, I’d really recommend it. I read it a couple of years ago and was reminded of how much I loved it when browsing a local library.
It’s (in my opinion) an amazing Sci-Fi book with characters that feel so unbelievably real and enjoyable to read. Seriously, the dialogue in the book had me hooked and audibly gasping or laughing during a lot of the read.
While the book feels hilarious, creative, and dark at certain points, it flows together fairly nicely and has an interesting plot that’s not always easy to predict (like the plot twists feel like plot twists instead of a cliche).
It might not be for everyone, but I think it’s a really good series/read that sadly isn’t that well known.
Anyways, I’d recommend giving it a try :D
Edit: I was trying to figure out how to summarize the plot when I came across a really good Reddit post titled “I can't believe that everyone sleeps on the Insignia Trilogy” which goes into a lot of detail and gives an honest review

Magisterium headcannon/idea since I’m re-reading the books :D
Headcannon:
Call has nightmares about Constantine’s life after his memories are “unlocked”. Like sometimes he’ll wake up with a start and a name on his lips - so familiar yet so out of reach and wrong.
Sometimes he’ll wake up crying, not knowing why.
Briefly, Call wonders how someone can grieve people they never knew.
If it so happens that Call suddenly wants to know about Jericho and everyone else from Alastair, no one mentions it.

I love the Magisterium series so much (I’ve been re-reading it lately),  but I’m feeling a little sad over some of the missed opportunities and things that could’ve happened in the book :(
For example, Call’s “evil overlord list/point system” thing had so much potential ( in my opinion) to create more internal conflict in Call.
Like, imagine if he took the list more seriously on a bigger scale. I mean things like over analyzing everything he ever did in his entire life and even stopping himself from liking foods or things that Constantine liked so he didn’t earn himself any evil overlord points (Imagine Alastair wondering why his son suddenly hates his favorite ice cream). Maybe Call even slightly tries to change his personality or who he is as a person to make sure he doesn’t resemble Constantine.
I feel like with enough development, the point system could have become a much bigger problem for Call than it had been in the books. That also means it would have been addressed more ( I think the only other person who knows about it is Aaron when he was in Call’s head and he only mentioned it once) as a mode of self deprecation (I think) that Call uses to punish himself for “being” the Enemy of Death.
I just feel like it had so much potential, yk?
Anyways thanks for coming to my TedTalk :D
