Been drawing a lot of L&D recently

As it is the russ-season in Norway atm, I wanted to draw them as russ/make them russ-cards (very small explanation of the tradition under cut)

Every year the graduating VGS class(age 18-19) gets to partake in the russ tradition! The russ will wear different colored jumpsuits depending on what subject area they’re studying; decorating these with their name/last name, plus different patches and paints. They’ll also make what are called russ cards: essentially fun little business cards that they can give out to people. The tradition is also tied to a lot of other things such as partying, mischievous challenges, making groups and music - it’s in summary a longer celebration of finally graduating from school.

A lot of my hand drawing process is mostly just about what “looks right” to me; not always necessarily what’s anatomically correct.

Mentally it looks something like this:

The palm being a strange uneven hexagon, figuring out where it folds/where the fingers attach, drawing them in, and then adding in details! However, for hand poses where the fingers are more visible than the palm I like to position the fingers first.

I also typically like to think of the way the skin folds.

In practice though, a lot of it’s more trial and error😭:

By biggest — and most clique — tip is just doing practices to learn how hands in general look and work. A fun exercise I like to do is finding a big collection of hand references, setting a timer for 30 minutes, and then just drawing as many as accurately as possible until the timer runs out. I’m kind of impatient when it comes to art, so I find this method not only helpful for understanding the shape of a hand, but also doing so in a way that makes me feel less frustrated and/or bored. (For connecting the hand to the rest of the body I typically have the rule of it being about the size of half a face.)

This is kind of messily explained since a lot of my process is just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks, but I hope this helps!😋
