hey im back to ramble about girl meets rock! found this in my drafts from last year, here's some (incomplete-ish) thoughts on rin.

for a few months now i thought something was up with rin, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it with this panel (ch34):

but recently we've been given more leeway into her character (especially with these panels from ch46):

it's a copy to how rin used to act, sitting next to someone she must admire. but things are different - here, she smiles, while by comparison she seems rather unhappy in her childhood.

rin experienced a drastic change between middle school and her experiences with hatano. she had cut her hair (likely before high school ended) as a way to offset this change. rin acts upfront to manipulate the strings in the background - which is just fine with her, if hatano, god herself can be given all the room to shine.

i think it's more likely that she's generally not confident enough to stand on the foreground. she is, at heart, a very reserved girl; upon closer inspection with a reread, she has a tendency to backseat in conversations that aren't one-on-one/initiated by her. her praise for hatano is both sword and shield, protecting her from being the center of attention while hatano is pushed forward.

we don't see her thoughts very often unless they're centered around hatano, and she's yet to get her own sort of character arc like momo and ayame have. the closest to this has been the recent chapters exploring the dynamics of the light music club, but that's less focused on rin and more so on exploring the relationships between seniors and other members of the club.

I really hope she gets her own arc soon, it's been hinted at for a while now...

stray thought, not related: when the fuck did takami and hatano get close enough for takami to start calling her by her nickname (hatocchi, ch15). takami has had like five convos max with her. bro is PLAYING? coming from other girls, it makes more sense; they're friendly to each other, there's not the same sense of distance that hatano and takami have. like, maybe it's just normal for them, but it does baffle me a little.
