And in these next 50 years you will eat so many delicious meals, laugh so many times with so many people you love, shout and scream and sing and cry and smile so hard your face hurts. And you will see such beautiful sunsets and feel fresh cold air on your face and feel warm and safe wrapped up in your favourite winter coat.

“We’re so often told that art can’t really change anything. But I think it can. It shapes our ethical landscapes; it opens us to the interior lives of others. It is a training ground for possibility. It makes plain inequalities, and it offers other ways of living. Don’t you want it, to be impregnate with all that light? And what will happen if you are?”

Barbie spoilers ahead but I’ve seen some people who say they didn’t like America Ferrara’s character’s monologue (i’m blanking on the character’s actual name but you know who i mean) saying it was kind of generic and superficial (i think the specific wording i saw was that it reminded them of a generic 2016 feminist tumblr post) and while i completely understand that i also think that was sort of the point in a way.
This whole movie is centred around girlhood, and how at some point during that (often much too early) you are confronted by the harsh reality and expectations of being a girl and a woman within a patriarchal society. I know there’s a point for a lot of girls where they’re starting to pick up on these things but they haven’t quite strung it all together or found a way to properly articulate everything they’re feeling. I know in my experience, and probably the experience of a lot of other women who grew up on the internet, it was a speech or a text post or whatever that sounded very similar to that monologue that finally made it all click into place. It was the jumping off point for everything we understand about girlhood, feminism, and the patriarchy today.
It was never supposed to be the most nuanced deep speech about feminism and girlhood and the patriarchy, it was a speech for the young girls who just wanted someone to say out loud everything they were feeling but couldn’t quite understand yet. It’s for the girls who needed to know that they weren’t the only ones who were seeing these things and feeling like this.

Love never ever leaves you. It’s always going to be dancing around you. It’s going to warm you up even when you feel like you’re going to be cold forever. It is gentle and all encompassing. It is soft to touch and it will always remind you of its existence, through humans, through nature. There is lots and lots of love around you, don’t forget to see it
