A Birthday Surprise (An EENE Commission)
I have not posted an EENE story in a while. It was fun writing this! This is a commission. If you would like to request a commission from me, feel free to message me. I hope you enjoy the story. Also, Edd is a genderbent in this fic.
“Hurry up, Ed! We don’t have much time!” Eddy told his friend as he taped the last strand of wrapping paper.
Ed wobbled on the ladder, hanging up the sign. “How’s this look, Eddy?”
Looking up from the third box he was wrapping up, Eddy furrowed his eyebrows at the lopsided sign. Why would Ed hang one side on his disco ball and the other on his dresser? Who cares if it’s lopsided? Double Dee would snip at him that the sign was out of proportion. Who cares. She was going to love this!
“Where should I put all the snacks, Eddy?” Ed asked, balancing himself on one foot. He was holding the punch bowl, bags of chips, drinks, and one jawbreaker on his head.
“You’d better not spill any of that,” Eddy warned him. For safe measures, he moved the presents to a safer place. He didn’t want anything to happen to them. For the last three weeks, Eddy had been scamming the neighborhood kids, mowed six lawns in the neighborhood, and even agreed to do all the chores that his mother wanted him to do.
Placing all the snacks as carefully as he could on the table, Ed happily danced around. He started wrapping his gift for Double Dee. Albeit it was a dinosaur toy that they’d been passing around for a while now, she still loved dinosaurs. “When are we going to jump out and shout surprise to Double Dee, Eddy?”
“Calm down, lumpy,” Eddy told him as he stepped off the ladder. “First, we gotta get her over here. And wrap up the rest of these presents.”
“Do you think Double Dee is going to like to pin the tail on Albert Einstein?” Ed was already playing the game himself, a blindfold around his eyes as he was blindly wandering around with the tail.
“Would you be careful? And who said you could open the gifts?” Eddy slightly pushed Ed away from him.
“I’m just excited!” The taller of the friends beckoned giving himself a warm hug. “Double Dee’s parents have never given her a party like this on any of her birthdays.”
Don’t remind me, Eddy grumbled to himself. Straitening up his shoulders, he placed his hands in his pockets and started outside. “I’ll be right back.”
As Eddy walked down the cul-de-sac to Double Dee’s house, he thought back to last year, the dreaded day that he never wanted to think about. Earlier that morning, he’d sent a happy birthday text to Double Dee. The weird part is that she never responded. When he and Ed invested for themselves, the poor girl was sitting alone in her house, sticky notes with her parent's requests and demands everywhere. None of them said ‘Happy Birthday.’
This year was going to be different.
About to knock on the door, Eddy had a different idea. Snickering to himself, he stepped into the bushes and rang the doorbell. Hearing footsteps, Double Dee answered the door. Bewildered, she looked around until Eddy jumped out of the bushes.
“Happy Birthday, Double Dee!” Eddy screamed, waving his arms all around as leaves covered his face.
His happy greetings didn’t meet the reaction he was hoping for. Double Dee’s eyes were red from crying. Tears still stained her face. It broke Eddy’s heart to see his friend this way, especially on one of the most joyous days.
“Oh, Eddy, I don’t mean to be the bearer of bad news,” Double Dee started, looking at her feet. “But today is not a good day for glorifying my birthday. I don’t feel up to it today.”
Eddy turned his brow up. “And why is that? Aren’t you the one who made sure that I had a cake even when I didn’t want one for my birthday?”
The young girl nodded in agreement. “Yes, I can attest to that. But mother and father...” her voice broke, and she hugged herself. “They didn’t leave me a sticky note even acknowledging my birthday.”
“Hey, what have I told you about them?” Eddy told his friend.
“I know, I know, I mustn’t let their disregard affect me, but Eddy.” The instant Double Dee looked at Eddy, her green eyes swimming in her own tears, Eddy thought that the dam was going to break after all these years and he’d start crying. “They’re my parents. It’s my birthday. What else is there to do?”
Shaking off the tears, Eddy smiled. “I got an idea, sockhead. Come on over to my place. Ed and I have a surprise for you.”
Double Dee smiled, but it wasn’t for long. “Again, I appreciate you and Ed trying to make this a special day...”
Without letting Double Dee finish her sentence, Eddy grabbed her hand and pulled her down the cul-de-sac to his house. All the while, Double Dee would not stop talking about how there was no need to make her birthday special. As soon as Eddy opened the door to his room, Double Dee was surprised at all the party favors, the birthday sign, and most especially, the presents in the corner of Eddy’s room.
“Happy Birthday, Double Dee!” Ed shouted in glee, tooting his party horn. He strapped a party hat to his friend’s head.
“My word, you two put this festivity together for me?” Tears streamed down Double Dee’s face again, but this time they were happy tears.
“You’re our pal, Double Dee. Now let’s quit the sugar talk and open your presents,” Eddy said, handing one of his gifts to her.
Double Dee loved the telescope, the dinosaur, and the jawbreaker. At Ed’s insist, they also played pin the tail on the donkey. It was the best birthday she could ever have. Giving her two very best friends a hug.
“Thank you, fellows. I will never forget this birthday,” Double Dee smiled in gratitude.
“Yeah, yeah, don’t rub it in, Double Dee,” Eddy acted like he didn’t care, but inside, he felt that warm feeling Double Dee described to him once.
