“She is a spiritualist, conjure woman, and a healer. She is a pillar and center in the community. She owns a little shop with roots, herbs, and she also cooks […]. She’s a mother and she’s someone who is deeply rooted in her traditions. She’s connected to the motherland, and she’s connected to the spiritual world—she’s a very powerful person.”

the idea that “you’re disrespecting the creators of your favorite characters if you—quote unquote—mischaracterize these characters in your fics or if you reduce them to horny sluts just for ship and smut” is so funny to me because
1. some canon creators made it explicitly clear that they can’t read fanfics people wrote about the characters they created, because, according to their own words, if they ever accidentally or subconsciously used anything from people’s fanfics in the source material of their works, then there might be a risk of them getting sued (yes, the characters are theirs and fans cannot monetize any works that have their characters in them, but fanfics—aka something fans created—belong to those fans, so if canon creators ended up making money off of those fanfics, then they could get into legal battles too).
2. fans don’t write fanfics to “honor or please” canon creators. there are other ways for them to do that if they want to. but fanfics have never been about “honoring or pleasing” canon creators. fanfics aren’t even about respecting canon creators or canon events, and I say this with respect. (what do you think tags like “alternate universe - canon divergence”, “fix-it”, “crack”, “porn without plot” on archive of our own stand for?)
fanfics are like this; imagine yourself as a raccoon and you see this delicious food people left on their porch for you. you look at it and think hmmm yummy. so you grab that food and then you run away with it to enjoy it in some comfort corner. you may choose to enjoy the food alone, or you may choose to share that food with your friends (but you cannot sell that food, because it’s originally someone else’s and you’re just eating/having fun with it). you may choose to dip that food in some spicy sauces that may or may not be suitable for that food and how it’s originally intended to be eaten. but hey! who cares if it’s suitable or not. if you like it then that’s all that matters.
3. canon—when it comes to fanfics—are not rules. as @allthingswhumpyandangsty has said before, canon are only suggestions. whether or not a fanfic writer will follow these suggestions is entirely up to them. because they write for fun. and it’s okay if they want to say “you know what? fuck canon”.
4. the concept of “mischaracterizing a character” overall is, in my personal opinion, not valid. because movies, books, tv shows, etc. are mainly about the interpretation of each viewer. you can interpret this character this way. other people can also interpret the same character differently. and there’s no “right or wrong” way to interpret a character when they’re all fiction and fantasies.
“you can write whatever you want, but people are free to find you weird, childish or disgusting” okay? I’ve never seen any writer say “you cannot find me weird, childish or disgusting🤬” because humans are gonna have thoughts and opinions about anything and everything, no matter how subconsciously those thoughts are.
I personally don’t believe art (be it fanfics or fan art) reflect artists’ moral compass or who they are in real life, but just like any other humans, I do have thoughts and I do find some things weird, childish or disgusting. instead of voicing my thoughts out loud, though, I choose to mute, block or ignore these things and focus my time and energy on things I like.
and it’s literally not an issue at all if some strangers on the internet, whose existence I don’t know about, find me weird, childish or disgusting. as long as they keep those thoughts to themselves, it’s totally fine. thought crimes are never real. it only becomes an issue when you start harassing people.
fandom is not about trying to police others.
fandom is about fun and knowing how to mute/block things you dislike instead of harassing others (and no, finding someone or something weird, childish or disgusting is not harassment as long as you keep those thoughts to yourself).
overall I love and respect every fanfic writer, no matter if the things they write is my cup of tea or not, because I think it’s beautiful how they love these characters and how they’re so passionate about these characters that they decide to make something for and from these characters. and as long as it makes them happy, they’re doing it right.
*this is a response to a funny ask that made me giggle today. also funny how anon chose not to show their face, because if they really believe they are right then surely there’s no need for them to hide behind anon.

re: this post
there are people out there who genuinely think fanfic writers write “to be canonically accurate and respectful to the canon creators and the multi billion companies that made these characters”?
babe, most fanfic writers write because
they love the characters
they are not normal about the characters
they are passionate about the characters
they are depressed and writing about the characters is their getaway
they are horny
canon compliance is only a choice. but there’s no rule in fanfics. and most fanfic writers are sure as shit not trying to be respectful to the multi billion companies that made the characters, and if you actually believe they are, then maybe you’re just new to fandoms.

I’m really loving the “raven siblings” idea with Jinu and Zoey. Because tbh I think Zoey would be more open to accepting Jinu and the idea that demons aren’t all that bad (and that the real evil is Gwi-ma). She literally said “maybe they are nice demons?” when they first saw the Saja boys perform.
Also, I could see Zoey and Jinu having that annoying sister - annoying brother dynamic lol. I think it fits well especially since Jinu is such a troll sometimes lmao. And Zoey would be the type to introduce Jinu to all things modern that he would be so confused by, like video games lol. Also, I guess it’s another chance for Jinu to be the good older brother that he thinks that he didn’t got to be.
The Raven Siblings started as a joke because they were the only ones with black hair instead of colorful and they kinda looked alike but now it's not a joke anymore. It has consumed me and many others. They are the biggest losers trapped in hot bodies (affectionate), Zoey is the one in charge of the music in HUNTR/X and Jinu in the Saja Boys, etc. They are brother and sisters no questions asked. And true, Zoey is a freaky monster lover, she would be open to be friends with all kinds of demon lol. And while I do kinda like the idea Zoey might be distant related to him because his sister is her ancestor, I kinda like the idea that they are found family better. With no blood connection. So Jinu wouldn't feel an obligation to act as a brother to Zoey, it would just happen naturally.
Their dynamic would be so cute. I really need Jinu back so I can see him interacting and becoming friends with Mira and Zoey. It starts by a cautious gratitude. They recognize his mistakes and that's why they keep their distance but also they are grateful he saved Rumi and slowly start to see how much Rumi and him like each other and that he has good intentions. At the end he, along with Derpy and Sussie, becomes a part of the Rumi Lovers Squad with Mira, Zoey and Bobby.
I need more of Zoey and Jinu friendship if he comes back to the sequel. I actually want all the Saja Boys back to have friendship with the girls and not just the little "romances" of Zoeystery and Miromabby. Don't get me wrong, I get they are made to be superficial, shallow stereotypes of roles idols play in a boy group. They are bland to contrast with the depth of the girls. Abby represents the sexualization of idols, Baby the infantilization, Romance the romantization and the parasocial relationships of people thinking that idol is for the fans and super boyfriend material and would never betray them by falling in love with someone else(when it's always nor true and here they show it by making Romance obsessed with Mira, a female idol) and Mystery is supposed to be the shy, introvert one, to show the lack of privacy the idols have. And they also show how easier man have it in certain industries, like they debuted with a viral song and were already competing with the girls who had a consolidated career for at least 5 years (since before the movie they won 5 idol awards in a row). But I want them back to see more of the K-pop industry in the movie through the lenses of a boy group. Because the girls show the perspective of a girl group, and it's different. I think they can still bring them back and have them not be that deep giving the girls and a little bit of Jinu the main focus, I just need them to have a few more lines and banger songs. I just want to see more than one demon free from Gwi-ma and how they deal with thaf freedom because surely will handle it differently from Jinu. They say one of the reasons they made the Saja Boys like that is because they wanted Jinu to look human in contrast to them, but it can still be like that. The guys could have forgotten about their human lives, and that's why they don't even have names. They don't remember. And Gwi-ma tortured them because they forgot how to be human and made them feel stupid and useless. And Jinu and the girls have to help them with some human stuff and not even give them backstories because they'll never remember. They would be just a tool to help Jinu and the girls. And the few personality traits they show through their lines and interactions would still fit the stereotype and bring the point home in a subtle way. They would still be basic in personality compared to the girls and Jinu.
I know it's probably not gonna happen, but I hope at least Jinu comes back, so I have my raven siblings (and my rujinu ofc)

anyways i just love the way kpop demon hunters stayed true to its roots in korean/asian culture, especially around the core theme of community vs individualism
the fact that it's not a single chosen one but a group of three
the fact that the honmoon is not powered by the hunters themselves but by the energy and love of the fans
the fact that gwi-ma turns people into demons by promising that he is the only one who can help them when he is in fact reliant on his army of demons to collect souls for him
the fact that "your idol" is about surrendering yourself to a single higher power while "golden" is about soaring to new heights together
the fact that gwi-ma preys on people's individual insecurities and shame to get inside their heads while rumi, mira, and zoey set them free in the end by encouraging them to embrace their differences and reminding them that they're not alone
the fact that you can see the audience cheering individually and even pushing into each other to get closer to the stage during "your idol"
while they're linking arms and cheering together and hugging during "what it feels like"
i have not seen the live action lilo and stitch but it feels like that movie sits on the opposite end of the spectrum from kpop demon hunters as a case study for how to tell a story in way that is culturally authentic and still resonates with a broader audience
and i think given that the core theme of the movie is all about community over individualism, the ending, particularly as it relates to rumi and jinu's budding romance, is really the perfect culmination of that broader theme
rumi and jinu's connection has all the hallmarks of that all-encompassing, all-consuming, borderline co-dependent first love where you keep your relationship a secret and sneak out of the house to meet up and feel like the other person is the ONLY person who really gets you
i'm the only one who can understand you, i'm the only one who will love you is the kind of thing that sounds romantic when you're 16 until you get older and realize how toxic it actually is and i love that the movie counters that in "what it sounds like" with rumi realizing that she had that love and support all along from her girls, and later, from the fans who continue to cheer them on through their comeback
it's about connection and sisterhood and love and sharing your fears and lifting each other up and becoming stronger and better together
and as compelling as i found rumi/jinu and as much as i would like to see their relationship explored more in a sequel/series, i just really love that this movie, which is clearly targeted at young women, ends on the message that romantic love is not the end all be all, that friendship is just as important if not more so than a romantic partner, that single women can lead successful, fulfilling lives, that true happiness and freedom start from within
it's crazy that this message still seems revolutionary in 2025 but given the current state of the world, it feels more necessary than ever
