Edison’s open door policy had been extended since the events of Halloween. The students seemed to be too frightened and hurt to speak about what they’d gone through but he wanted to make sure that they knew he was there. He’d taken to leaving notes on his classroom and office door whenever he left, just like today. He’d gone down to the library to use the copy room, resources for his students were always too many for his little office printer. He’d left a note on his door saying that he’d be gone for the hour and be in there, so it didn’t surprise him when he herd a voice behind his saying his name. He turned to the person with a curious expression, the printer still running behind him now. “Hm?”

“I guess I saw him over by the food, but I didn’t really think about it that much..” The teachers had been the least of her worries at the party. She kicket her feet at some pebbles and looked down at her boots. “To be honest.. it’s kind of underwhelming… I thought parties were supposed to be fun.. but I’m walking around casually smalltalking to drunk people.. and some pf them are like getting.. really drunk…” She guesse it would be more fun if she was drinking as well… But it didn’t feel worth it.
“Maybe I can help you look?” She didn’t want to leave, in case she missed out on something they would talk about in days to come, and she felt safer and more comfortable around a teacher, so why not used the situation to her advantage.
Edison nodded, assuming that Ellis had abandoned his duties. He would definitely bring this up later, but tonight her wanted to make sure everyone was safe and being responsible. He was surprised that she wasn’t having fun, everyone else seemed to be. Most of the teenagers here obviously couldn’t wait to be drunk. He all of a sudden felt bad for Sarah. “I think that would be good.” He smiles at her, hoping she would feel better with some sober company. Even if it was from a teacher. “I think we’ll start by telling someone to get rid of the punch bowl.”

jk-eddie:
Eddie could tell the punch had been spiked the instant he first raised his cup to his lips, but while he wasn’t the one to have done it, he wasn’t going to go ratting on anyone. The prankster usually had his own fair share of tricks up his sleeve, and he knew that teachers and students alike would probably start pointing fingers at him which is why he specifically didn’t spike the punch. He also knew how to handle himself and make sure he didn’t drink too much alcohol, but the girl who had stumbled up to the punch table and been busted by Edison clearly didn’t.  “Mr E,” he called out intercepting in an attempt to save the younger girl, who seemed extremely grateful as she wrapped her arms around his middle. “I don’t know if this is the same alcohol but Gunner had a stash hiding near the gazebo. Someone could have found it?” he offered, gently pushing the girl off him and keeping his eyes on the teacher. “I could help you look for it if you want?”
Tumblr media
Edison recognised Eddie’s voice immediately. The boy was one of his favourite students, they’d seemed to get along as soon as they’d realised they shared a name. Although the younger Edison didn’t go by his full given name. He nodded at the student’s offer with a tight smile appearing. “I’d appreciate that, Eddie, but wouldn’t you rather be dancing with your friends?” He didn’t want to take the boy away from the fun. He’d already been helpful in giving a name, something Edison had no reason question.

The fact that he believed her so easily caught her of guard, but then again, she was always the nice girl, the disciplined one. Her eyes traveled for a moment. She wasn’t able to look into his eyes. Was he on to her? He had to be..
“Yes.. the punch.. over by the drinks table… What?.. Do you think I’m lying or something?” She made eye contact with him again, determined to keep it, to hopefully get him to believe her and leave to check it out.
Tumblr media
Her question made him frown. “No, I just know that Mr. Malloch is supposed to be watching the food table.” Edison had never liked that man. He seemed nice enough but there was always something wrong... The way he talked to the students and the staff at the school made him uncomfortable, and he was usually very open minded about people.
Edison blinked at the girl, suddenly feeling uneasy about the night. It felt like chaos, no matter how hard he tried to have fun, he had a bad feeling. “Have you seen Mr. Malloch tonight?”

Sarah recognized the girl Mr Daniels as talking to. It was the second best swimmer at their team. She had to admit, she was disappointed in her for how much she had been drinking, but she couldn’t get in trouble. Their next swim meet was in two weeks, and she was the most valuable one, except for Sarah of course. They couldn’t win without her. So Sarah did what every good team captain would do, she save her friend.
“Mr Daniels!” She called out and tapped his shoulder. “I can tell you were the alcohol is.” The other girl was starting to stumble away, so she hoped he would let her go. “I haven’t had a drop of alcohol. I swear. You can smell my breath, test my blood or something. I’m not drunk.” She kept her eyes on the girl. The longer she was talking, the longer she would have to get away. “But I overheard some boys talking… or.. I think they were boys.. They wore masks so I can’t be too sure… they could be girls with just some very masculine voices.. but anyway… I heard them talking, and they said they had spiked the punch.”  It was a complete lie. But if high school movies had taught her anything, it was that someone always tried to spike the punch, so hopefully someone had done it here as well.
Tumblr media
He turned to voice from behind him, seeing a brunette he recognised. He realised quickly that she was trying to distract him but he figured there must be a good reason if she was willing to put herself in the firing line. He heard the other girl begin to sneak away but didn’t look around, pretending not to nitce. As the brunette talked, he shifted his position, letting his arms fall to his sides. “There’s no need for tests, Sarah, I believe you.” He really ddi, he liked to trust his students and hoped they would trust him too.
Boys, or maybe not boys. His eyesborws furrowed at her, probably making his face makeup look a little more menacing . “The punch?” He repeated as a question.

Jonah rolled his eyes at all of those who were drunk. He knew this was a school-sanctioned event and they’d catch on eventually. Surely, despite what television and movies lead you to believe, adults weren’t dumb. Especially not the type to work in a prestigious boarding school.
He had not taken one sip of alcohol - but hadn’t eaten much all day and was a little light-headed. Hearing a strong voice behind him, he turned around and raised his eyebrow. “You can search me, sir, I’m clean. Just a bit tired,” He grinned. “I would tell you where it is, except I’m new, you know? The last thing I need to be is the one who snitched on everyone.”
Tumblr media
Edison watched the boy, his expression slowly softening as he understood his hesitance. He didn’t want to be the hard ass teacher, it wasn’t him, but he also knew the rules and if anyone found out he;d known about substance abuse and done nothing... “I’m sorry but I have to know.” He wished he could leave the boy but alone but if he lost his job, he couldn’t help his students anymore. “I won’t disclose who told me, it’ll stay between us.” He tried his best to stay proffessional and teacher-like, bit he couldn’t help trying to be nice to the kids..

Party Pooper | Open
After only being in the festivities for an hour or so, Edison could tell that some of the students were quite drunk. He hadn’t thought much of it when he saw a girl fall over- she’d been wearing heels after all. And he still didn’t consider that alcohol was at play after some rowdy students began throwing toilet paper rolls around the gardens, he had of course stopped them and enlisted some other teachers to help clean up their mess but he wasn’t considering substance abuse. He trusted his students too much sometimes... that became clear when he noticed a girl throwing up in the bushes and had to take her to the infirmory, that was when he connected the dots.
The girl was in good hands with Katie, he knew that all too well. Immediately after leaving the halls he went over to the beverages table and stopped a student who seemed particularly unsteady on their feet, foldeding his arms over his chest and trying not to sound too dissapointed. “Are you going to tell me where the alcohol is, or do I have to call off the party and search everyone?”

Katie remained silent as they walked, not because she couldn’t think of anything to say, but because she was spending so much time thinking of what she was going to say. How was she going to explain the fact that she left. She left because she was ashamed. Ashamed of the fact that she had stayed with her ex for too long. Ashamed that she hadn’t taken his advice and gotten out before it was too late.. and although she had gotten out, she still paid the price. Her daughter wasn’t something she wasn’t she was ashamed of, the girl brought her more joy than anything else, but she was ashamed of having any connection to her ex. Even if he wasn’t in their life, that connection was still there. She had thought the walk would have been longer, but before she knew it they were walking into his office. Looking around, she smiled at how much it resembled him. It made sense of course, but again it struck her that she was near him, and not just in the same country.. but the same room. Turning to look at him, she smiled faintly, suddenly feeling a little nervous. “Uh, cute office.” she said awkwardly.
Tumblr media
Edison felt embarrassed by how messy it all was, as if he would have forgotten about it. He was so used to living in the clutter that it never occured to him to clean anything or tidy up... He really did need some help with that. “Thank you.” His awkward smile returned as he turned to face her, having stepped into his office just after she did. “I never did learn how to tidy up after myself...” He broke off his sentence to reach down and pick up a pile of papers and his breifcase from a chair, clearing room for her to sit. “You can just- yeah, here.” He was starting to feel nervous now- being alone for a conversation with the woman he hadn’t seen in years. He’d thought about her almost every day and now that she was here, he didn’t know what to do with himself. He just held onto the papers, watching her.

“That sounds perfect,” she replied, letting out a small giggle at his announcement. “Oh, you can? Learning new talents I see..” she teased lightly. Even after so long, it was natural for her to make playful remarks, even if she wasn’t sure if it was appropriate or not. “Okey dokey, to your office it is. Lead the way?”
Tumblr media
He was glad she took the opportunity to make a joke, it was already starting to feel a little... normal again. Edison nodded at her comment about new talents, even though that quite possibly was the only one. “Of course, follow me.” His feet moved before he’d realised and all at once they were walking down the hallway and to his office. He wasn’t sure if he should say anything, or what to say, so he kept quiet, just hoping that it wasn’t awkward. It was all so strange, that she’d be here and he’d see here, completely by chance. If he had left just a minute earlier they may not have met for days or weeks. Or months, considering how rare it was that he ventured out of his office.

paigexandean:
Paige rarely spoke up in class. She liked to be disliked, or even feared, by her fellow peers. And so when she did speak up, it truly meant that the lesson had captured her interest completely. “I disagree.” She announced, ignoring the groans from the students around her who most likely expected her to say something atrocious. Instead she cleared her throat before continuing, “I mean, I enjoy Lennie as much as the next person, but I don’t think he’s necessarily real. I mean, he doesn’t go through any serious character developmenthis overall arc is just flat. And I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but in real life, people change. They don’t stay the same throughout such a period of time. To have someone with so much innocence and defenselessness is great because it makes us care about him, which is why his death is so hard hitting, but that doesn’t make him realistic by any means. I’m just not sure if there’s an underlying reason to why Steinbeck wrote him like that, or if it was just… coincidence.”
Tumblr media
Edison found the voice coming from Paige. She was a strange student, brilliantly intelligent in her work but hardly spoke up or engaged during lessons. It was a nice occasion when she did and he focused on her words, as he did all of his students. Her opinion made sense to him, he agreed with her more than he did the other student but there was never a wrong interpretation. “Well, Steinbeck himself said that Lennie ‘was not to represent the inarticulate and powerful yearning of all men’. He wasn’t supposed to seem like a real person, rather a real idea. Or a feeling, more something that a lot of people can relate to rather than something they are or can be.” He let himself trail off there, not wanted to ramble on too much. “But yes, you make a valid point. His arc wasn’t as thorough as it should have been. Interestingly enough, his agents thought the same, they didn’t like the book at first.”

Of Students And Teachers | Open
“Lennie always seems so real when I’m reading through his parts, maybe it’s just me.” One study explained in reply to Edison’s comment about the book overall being a work of fiction.
“Excellent point!” His students were always coming up with creative ideas and explanations, throughout all of his classes. There were very few students that didn’t have capturing imaginations, and the ones who didn’t participate were in core English, not elective classes. “Actually, the reason Lennie might seem so real to you all is that he was based on a real person.” His core class had been studying Of Mice And Men for a couple weeks now, the second book on their reading list. He was addressing the entire class now, his eyes scanning the faces of each of his students with at least twice the excitement on his face compared to theirs. “John Steinbeck worked with a man who killed their boss and ended up being sentenced to an insane asylum.
He turned to the board, circling Lennie’s name with his pen before turning back in time to hear another student chime in.

whitneyxcastle:
Any distractions were welcome at this point. Whitney couldn’t quite get on the same page with herself. One minute she was scrounging for any type of solitude she could find. In a desolate corner, in her room, in the gardens, anywhere to stay cooped up without being seen, talked to or worst of all, judged. She had always been the non-judging type. The girl that constantly gave people the benefit of the doubt, lived by a strict ‘you don’t know people by their cover’ code. Yet it was far too easy to feel as if others didn’t. She was tired of being sized up by the other students, by being judged based on who her oldest brother was and what had or hadn’t happened to him. It was as if she would always remain ‘the little sister of that guy who went missing’. At the same time she felt immensely guilty thinking like that. What if Gunner was suffering? What if he was already dead? He was probably terrified, possibly alone.. and here she sat complaining about people’s opinion of her. That was when the other part kicked in, the fear of being left alone, the shame of pulling away from those she had who cared for her, the need to talk or be talked to because in the silence her mind would singlehandedly rip her to shreds from the inside. Glancing at Mr Daniels she had to smile a little, a small and crooked smile, at the Doctor Seuss reference. “Adolescence is the conjugator of childhood and adulthood.” She quoted back, using one she’d read in government class a few years back from Louise Kaplan. “So I guess that is entirely possible.” She agreed. Twinning her fingers in her lap, Whitney held back a sigh as she sunk deeper back into the chair, her long hair catching in between the back as she tipped her head back for a moment. How much longer could she go on like this? Little sleep, little food, altogether little rest.. As Edison spoke again, she wasn’t supposed to call him that but in her mind she did, the girl straightened back up. “The routine of life. I hear its supposed to be nice, having a pattern to follow.” She didn’t entirely know why she’d said that or where the thought had come from, but his next question dissuaded her from thinking anymore about it. “Not so great, if I’m honest.. which, I’m not supposed to be because the last thing my parents or my brother needs is distressing rapports from the school.. not that you’d say anything but I imagine too many red flags would kind of require you to.” She slowly lifted her shoulders in a shrug, her tone heavy and tired.
Tumblr media
He nodded at her returned quote, considering it in the moment of silence that followed. It was true, and a valid point.  He’d heard the quote before, he’d read it a few times, but he wasn’t sure that he’d really considered it until now, which was odd for him. Everything occured to him, it was one of the reasons he was such a good teacher, but also one of the causes of his unhappiness. He listened to her, only growing more worried. She seemed tired, and he wsn’t surprised but he had hoped she’d be doing better... if that was even possible under the circumstances she’d been put under. Everyone in the shcool was hurting but Whitney and her brother were two of the worst effected.
He understood what it meant to miss someone and not know where they were or how they were doing... to think that they could be dead. “I would have to, yes, but I don’t have to break confidence unless I think you might hurt yourself or someone around you... are you...” He paused to analys his choice of words, not wanting to offend her or make her pull up any defenses. “I have to ask, are you considering hurting yourself or someone else...?”

clairehaseltine:
Claire knew that she was grasping at straws, but she needed something more, something that wasn’t vague or different for each person, she needed something definite, clear instructions. Something to hold on to that’d help her navigate through the labyrinth, because some nights she wasn’t sure if her own method of coping was good enough. “I’ve followed so many ways but I can’t find the exit … or whatever there is. There has to be something, right?” Even if your roots were gone, you could still be okay, couldn’t you? “Literature explains so much and you know it so well,” she tried, “You’ve got to have answers, you’ve got to know… I don’t want to forever be stuck missing someone who won’t come back.”
Tumblr media
He had no idea what to say, he’d never been pushed to give an answer like this. It made him feel cornered and useless which only made it harder for him to concentrate. He wanted to help her so badly. “I...” Edison cleared his throat, trying to buy himself some time before he had to continue whatever it was he was about to say. “Perhaps if you tell me what’s happened I can... better assist you.” God, he always sounded like a robot when he was nervous. This girl seemed bordering on being in danger. Should he call the nurse? The principle? An ambulance? No, Edison, stop getting ahead of yourself.

Katie noticed the way he lowered his gaze for a moment, but she also saw his eyes light up a little at the mention of coffee, and she couldn’t help but smile in admiration. There were some things that never changed, and she was glad to see some sort of familiarity. As he said he was free in that instant, she pulled her phone out of the pocket of her uniform, checking the time quickly. She still had about an hour until she had to pick up Darcy. She didn’t know if that was long enough to talk things out completely, but at the same time she didn’t want to let slip any opportunity to be around him, not yet anyway. “I am, actually! Is there anywhere on campus we can go though?” she asked a little hesitantly. After seeing he had somehow gotten her friendship bracelet, covered in blood, she didn’t want to go too far away from her daughter.
Tumblr media
“There is.” He began, running through the options in his mind. The mess hall was full of students, and the staff room full of teachers, but... “My office has a coffee maker.” Of course it did, it was Edison. “I can foam milk.” He said it almost proudly, a little twinkle in his eye. He taught himself how to do it, using videos online and lots of different techniques to get the best silky foam on the top. Truthfully, the side with the coffee machine was the only part of his office that was tidy and clean, he took very good care of it.
