Preliminary task- self evaluation
WWW: - editing was simple but effective - clear storyline - match on action was effective - dialogue and non-diegetic sounds were appropriate (no swearing) - good acting - shots were clear - the silence adds to the intentional awkwardness of the short-film EBI: - maybe try to silence piano and wind at certain points - make it more fast paced - add some extra characters to make it more realistic

Dexter title sequence pt2
Sound:
The diegetic sound can make the audience cringe away from the screen. For example, the high in the mix diegetic sound of Dexter shaving can make the audience wince and shudder due to the high level of sensitivity of the sound. Therefore, the close up of the neck alongside the sound can make a viewer draw back and cringe as it is a very delicate area of the body and it can make people feel uncomfortable due to the fact it hints to cutting someone’s throat, linking to different ways to kill.
The non-diegetic sound juxtaposes the diegetic sound. For example, the jolly non-diegetic sound can represent dual personality as Dexter on the outside is a police officer and seems to be a normal person (represented through the jolly non-diegetic music) , however behind closed doors he is a serial killer (represented by the repulsive diegetic sounds). This can lead to an audience pondering on what to expect for when they actually watch the show.
Mise-en-scene:
Parts of the mise-en-scene can give some insights of the show. For example, the tissue that absorbs his blood after he cuts himself is actually something Dexter does to his victims. He collects a sample of their blood and keeps them as trophies. An audience might not notice this until after watching the show, however it highlights how title sequences have a lot more meaning and importance than many people think because they hold valuable pieces of information that can help you understand the plot better.
The references to blood through the mise-en-scene can lead to audiences feeling unsettled. For example, the cooking of the egg can be mistaken as ketchup which is why it can be disturbing as it leaves the audience contemplating where the blood came from. In addition, the t-shirt covering his face at the end can link to two things: dual personality (white connotes innocence, he is wearing a mask because deep down isn’t innocent), suffocating someone (linking back to various ways of killing someone). This can make people feel unsettled because it can leave an audience wandering if they have ever encountered someone like this in real like who is just pretending to be someone they aren’t.

Dexter title sequence
Camera:
The insert shots of certain objects can make the audience uncomfortable by hinting ways to kill someone. For example, the insert shots of the shoe laces can hint to strangulation through the way he is gripping tightly to them and pulling at them with force. This leads to a slight insight as to what the show might be about without giving too much away as it leaves the audience wondering why he is being so forceful when tying his laces or flossing. This could make an audience uncomfortable because it makes the bigger picture quite ambiguous.
The extreme close ups can be viewed as disturbing by some members of the audience. For example, the extreme close ups of him eating have lots of detail e.g. the chewing and the sound, which can lead to some audience members feeling repulsed by the scenes. This is because we don’t usually watch other people eat up close, meaning it can lead to feeling you are invading somebody’s privacy, linking to being disturbed as it gives a sense that it is too intimate.
Editing:
The editing style can lead to heightened tension. For example, the jump cuts when the meat is being cut can push the terror closer to the camera without giving the viewer a chance to look away, heightening an unsettling atmosphere due to the close ups of the aggressive sawing with the knife which could potentially link back to hinting ways of killing (cannibalism). It leads to heightened tension because they can be quite jarring, which can help create a planned unsettling feeling for a viewer, which overall can lead to an advantage to reach your aim when storytelling.
The transitions can be satisfying to watch for a audience. The transitions matching up with the non-diegetic sound that helps create a sense of a controlled environment, contrasting with the jump cuts which can lead to tension creates a planned sense of confusion amongst an audience as the ambiguity of what the show is truly about will linger on their minds. It can be satisfying for an audience and it opposes the other content which can be viewed as disturbing, leading to some comfort in what they are watching.
