So I’m going to skip over Rider and Keeper magics for now as I haven’t explained very much about them anyway, instead were diving into the World itself.
Umbra is split into two factions as well as three civilizations and an independent kingdom. The two factions are the Alliance and the Empire, the Independent Kingdom is a neutral kingdom who focuses on trade, and the civilizations are that of the Mermaids, Centaurs and Dragons. The Dragons are the only ones to take part in the factions being a member of the Alliance.
The Alliance is made up of the kingdoms of Ehimore, Chewen, Madour, Xetus, Tucan and the Dragon Civilization. The Alliance was formed to try and beat the Empire after they started taking over Kingdoms, enslaving Haron, Fenius, Lupine, Canous and Vixlen, as well as nearly eradicating an entire Keeper school. The Alliance has nearly outlawed the use of Necromancy magic as well as outlawing slavery.
The Empire is made up of Nido and Lorin. Lorin formed an alliance with Nido to become an part of it in order to protect itself from the Empire. The Empire is ruled by the Undead Emperor and Empress. They have allowed slavery of the Anima races to flourish and have done nothing to stop it. The attack on the Keeper school was down as Keepers are one of few beings able to kill a necromancy mage at full strength. Necromancy is the most important form of magic, and the Empire’s nobility are almost completely have the Necromancy affinity, very few have any other.
The Independent Kingdom of Beasea is the Trading hub of Umbra. As Beasea isn’t part of either the Alliance or the Empire they can freely trade with both. Beasea is ruled by Undine and a lot of their trade comes from the ocean farms the Undine tend to. While there is some slavery of the Anima races, the nobility and ruling family is trying to stop the illegal slave trade in the kingdom.
The Centaur civilization as well as that of the Mermaid civilization are secluded from the factions. They have their own cultures and religious beliefs. Mermaids live far out into the Hipia sea, they are actually believed to be a myth in Umbra however there are very few who know they do exist. Centaurs live on the Plato found between mountains that separate Beasea and Ehimore.

Welcome back to my third post about Umbra! Today we’ll be talking about Magical Affinities, or in simpler terms what magic one can use.
In the world of Umbra there are 18 magical affinities that line up with the 18 magic types. Everyone is born with at least one magical affinity however that doesn’t mean that everyone can do magic.
Magical affinities are most often inherited from ones mother or father, but there are cases of people who have inherited an affinity from further back in the family line.
Everyone has a primary affinity which shows as the majority of their eye colour if they have more than one, and a secondary which can show up as flecks or a gradient in the eyes. In rare cases someone might have two completely balanced affinities which leads to heterochromia. In certain species it will also show in different ways but I’ll explain that when I get to races.
When it comes to most magics, one can only use the affinity or affinities they were born with, the exception being Runic magic which can be used by anyone in both the Empire and the Alliance, as well as the Independent Kingdom, and the Mermaid, Dragon and Centaur civilizations.
Magical affinities have to be channeled through a ffocws, which in actuality is a crystal or metal that connects with their magical affinity or affinities. Druid and Guardian level mages often have their ffocws inlaided into a weapon or staff to help channel magic through the staff or weapon.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
That’s it for magical affinities, next up will be the other category, which includes Rider and Keeper magics, though I’m also going to add Centaur and Mermaid magic as well.

First topic, MAGIC!
I’m going to be splitting it into three sections, as there’s a lot to cover. The three sections are Types of magic, Magical Affinities, and Other. The other covers the magic of Keepers and Riders in this world as while the basic rules of magic are the same for everything in Umbra, Keepers and Riders have different abilities and magic others don’t.
In Umbra there are 18 forms of magic one can have as a magical affinity, as well as two others that are the magic of Riders and Keepers.
The different forms of magic are as follows
-Dark
-Light
-Water
-Fire
-Earth
-Air
-Healing
-Storm
-Necromancy
-Love
-Creation
-Transformation
-Dream
-Nightmare
-Future Vision
-Empathic
-Animal
-Runic
Runic and Future Vision are the two rarest types of magical affinities in Umbra, with Future Vision being the rarest. While having a Runic affinity is rare, Runic magic can be used by anyone in Umbra, though is only used by the Keepers and later Riders when its brought in by a Rider who was raised as a ward of the Keeper school of the Maned.
The most proficient users of magic are mages trained at one of the schools of magic. All mages fit into one of the following categories if a citizen of the Alliance kingdoms;
Squire- the worst at magic and often young children who just started their training, the colour the schools use to identify Squires is white
Apprentice- the second lowest rank, Apprentices are usually found in classrooms along side Squires learning basics in their magic affinity, however unlike Squires Apprentices are able to use magic at the basic level. The colour the schools use to identify Apprentices is blue
Scholar- the Scholars are the mid-ranked mages, they know around 50 spells are are capable in both the field and in the classroom. It is around this point that they start shadowing or assisting either a Druid or a Guardian that decides to mentor them. The colour the schools use to identify Scholars is Yellow when they don’t have someone to shadow and Orange when they are shadowing a high ranked mage.
Druid- Druids are the second best of the mage ranks and offer serve as teachers to the Squires and Apprentices just starting out. They are extremely capable at magic and are seen as some of the best as becoming a Guardian is a difficult process most don’t wish to undertake so Druids often hold authority over the mage schools as when there are little to know Guardians, they are the most powerful. The colour used to identify them is green
Guardian- Guardians are the most powerful mages in Umbra, however to become a Guardian a mage needs to master at minimum 95% of spells for their affinity as well as creating a new one. Guardians mages are aloud anywhere in the Alliance, as well as advising the rulers and act as an outside prospective during meetings. The colour used to identify them is purple
If a mage is part of the Empire they have a different ranking system. Most mages in the Empire are Necromancers and so they have the only school of Necromancy magic in Umbra. The ranking system has to do with how a Necromancy mage deals with a body over raw power. The ranks for the empire are as follows;
Animator- Someone who can bring the dead back to life by animating the body
Saints- Someone who can bring people back from the dead, however they control the body. This is most often used with knights that have passed
Risers- the most powerful of Necromancy mages, they can use both powers effectively and are most often nobles or royals.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Next up will be explaining magical affinities

This is my first ever post about Umbra so I’m going to start with the basics.
Umbra is my fantasy world and setting of all my fantasy novels. There are a few so here’s a list of the ones I know at this time:
- Dragon Riders
-Guardians
-Keepers
-Mate of a Wolf
-Half Blood Fae
Umbra draws from European and Mediterranean cultures as well as North American geography. All the stories are original, and ones I’ve been working on for a variety of years depending on which series.
I’ll explain more about the magic, races, cultures and more later, I just thought I’d start with the basics.
I think my next post will be focused on Magic, hope everyone enjoys.
