“Definitely the second one,” Grant replied. “And I may or may not have looked at to see what it was about. It was about like some illegal Chimera fighting ring in Utah. Utah, of all the places.”
Kennedy chuckled, “Okay, I’ll figure it out. Thank you.” When he admitted to having peaked at the file, she quirked her brow. “Oh? I guess it’s always the places that seem least likely to have such wildly illegal activity that do.”

Nate helped the girl pick up her books. As they stood, he handed her the books he had picked up for her. “It’s kind of dumb the door opened outward like that.” He shrugged slightly. “It’s Iris right? I think we have History together.”
“I think it’s like that in case of a fire. You wouldn’t want the door to open inward, it’d be counter-intuitive. If the fire was in the gym, people would be freaking out and running at the doors and your first instinct would be to just keep moving forward, not pause to pull a door open. There are probably other safety-related reasons, too,” Iris rambled, taking the books from him. When he mentioned their shared class, she looked up at him in surprise. “Uh... yeah, yeah, it’s Iris.”

Looking at her best friend made it so much harder to tell him. “I,” she tried to start, but her words didn’t seem to surface. He had been with her through everything, so why was this so hard to tell him. It was Emerson, she could trust him with her life. Avalon put her head in her hands. “I’m sorry.”
Emerson furrowed his brow at her apology and he stepped towards his best friend. “Sorry for what? Closing your curtains? Water under the bridge, I’ve already put it behind me,” he shrugged, trying to make light. He bit at his lip nervously taking his hands out of his pockets to gently place one on her shoulder in what he hoped was a comforting gesture. “Avalon... you can tell me anything. On your time, of course, but whatever it is, I’m here.”

Nate was just finishing up with basketball practice, when the babysitter called. “Sam, I’m on my way home now, I’ll be there in a half hour tops, yeah? Can you just give Nadia a snack right now or something? Yeah? Thanks.” While he was on the phone, he opened the gym door, and her a thud from the other side, accidentally hitting the blonde girl on the other side. “Oi!” he said. “Sam, I gotta go.” When he hung up, he looked at the girl. “Are you alright? I shouldn’t have opened the door so quickly. I’m so sorry.” ( @ecrivezvous )
Iris’s head was in the clouds. She wasn’t paying attention and was walking a bit close to the wall than she should’ve been, so she wasn’t clear of the gym door when it swung open suddenly. “Ow,” she muttered under her breath. The force of the door knocked her books from her arms and she rubbed her likely bruising arm as she knelt to pick them up. “Um, yeah, I’m fine,” she nodded, assuring the boy who’d just aggressively emerged from the gym. Looking up from her books, she realized it was Nate and offered him a small smile, “Really, it’s totally okay. I shouldn’t have been walking so close to the door.”

Deirdre’s heart was racing as she took in everything Zac had just said. Was this a dream? Was she imagining this? Had Zac just all but admit that he had feelings for her? Suddenly, she realized he was waiting for her to say something. “You weren’t,” she said, surprisingly calm for how she felt. “Friendzoned, I mean. It’s been…goodness, I’m not sure how long it’s been, but I haven’t thought of you as a friend in a long time, Zac. You’re…more than that. Much more.”
Without realizing he was doing so, Isaac held his breath as he waited for Deirdre to respond. When she finally did, he exhaled in an audible sigh of relief. “I’ve been waiting a very long time to say something,” he admitted, “it just never felt like there was a right time, you know? I was worried about what you were dealing with and I didn’t want to pile something else on top, in case you didn’t feel the same.” But now he knew. He felt like a weight was lifted from his chest. He wasn’t hiding anything from her anymore and his feelings were reciprocated. It felt like he was back in school, which was silly to him but it was also exciting. He’d been so focused on building his career at Ilvermorny that he hadn’t left himself any time to date in his twenties.

“Thank you all the same,” said Deirdre. She was more grateful than she knew how to express and she hoped she’d never take him for granted. “So is this a social call or did you need something?”
Isaac was suddenly reminded why he came to visit her in the first place and he felt the heat of a blush creep up his face. “Well, sort of both? I feel like it’s always social with you, but there was something I needed to... get off my chest, I guess.” Zac chuckled, feeling silly for what he was about to say. “Oh boy. I had this whole idea in my head that I’d come here, confess my feelings to you and... I don’t know what I thought would happen, but it feels like I was just friend zoned. Which is fine, if that’s what happened, I’m obviously more than okay with just being friends.” He paused for a brief second. “But I was hoping we could talk about that. Us. Whatever we are. Friends or otherwise.”

Avalon nodded at him. Swingset, my backyard, five minutes, she responded. Avalon, put on a hat to hide the formed bald spot on her head where she started losing her hair. “Mom, I’ll be outside with Emerson,” she told her mother, grabbing a coat and going outside to meet him at the swing set in the back, a common ground for them every summer. It seemed eerie though now, without them even going on it this summer.
When Avalon saw her best friend, she gave him a small smile. “Hey,” she said, somewhat trying to feel normal.
Emerson was relieved she agreed to meet. And a bit nervous. Whatever it was she was going to tell him couldn’t be good if she felt it was better to do in person. He shoved is feet in his shoes haphazardly and quickly made his way outside, glad his parents were at work so they wouldn’t delay or stop him.
Hands in his pockets, he smiled when he saw Avalon. “Hi,” he responded. “So, uh, what’s up?” Real smooth, dude. He mentally berated himself but didn’t say anything else.

Deirdre’s heart felt fit to burst when he said he’d go with her to meet her mum, who she could only hope liked him. Her mum had always been particular about the guys in Deirdre’s life, but when be even more so after this whole Richard situation. She wasn’t sure what she’d do if her mum took a disliking to Zac.
“Oh. Of course not. Go right ahead,” she told him. She waited until he had gotten his drink to say, “Thank you. For everything, Zac. I’m honestly not sure how I would have survived these last several months without you. You’re the best.”
Isaac was only gone long enough to get himself some water and gulp it down. He returned to Deirdre and in doing so was greeted with her compliment. As he could feel heat rise in his face, he offered her a smile. “You’re strong, Dee. I am happy I could be there for you, though. I would’ve hated to know you were facing what was happening all on your own.”

It’s a long story, she replied. Should be done in person, really. Avalon looked down at her hands, one of them gripped around the flashlight. I miss you.
Can you meet me outside? Emerson stood from his chair, setting his flashlight on his desk as he awaited her reply. He half expected her to say that she couldn’t, and he’d respect that.

Grant looked through the papers he had in his hands. “Hey, I know this is a lot, but I was told to give this stuff to you, so don’t shoot the messenger.” Grant smiled at Kennedy, holding out the papers. ( @ecrivezvous )
Looking up from the case she’d been reading over, Kennedy smiled as Grant approached her. His words took a moment to register in her brain, so she was just staring at him for a moment before eyeing the papers he was holding out to her. “Sorry,” she muttered under her breath as she took the stack from him. “Uh, what is this exactly? Do you know if I’m supposed to file it or did they just hand it to you and tell you to give it to me like I’d know what to do next?”
