look shout out to the wheel of time show for unearthing, wrenching out, and building up a thematically and emotionally coherent plot from literally thousands of pages of irrelevant nonsense/Robert Jordan’s id *which* fine to have but I didn’t need to know okay

not gonna be spoilery, but I'm starting to wonder if all these disney live action shows have a production process that basically means the writers can't know for sure what will actually be filmed, and so can't plot setup and payoff over multiple episodes. Either there's no or far-too-minimal setup that won't be noticed if it doesn't pay off, or set up has to be done in the same episode as the payoff, which isn't always gonna work. And these are all season-arc shows, not episodic. And you can do the basic event -> consequential event story without that, but it's not as satisfying
#are the cartoons better because when you have a budget that matters you do really need the scripting done early in the process#which will reliably be followed episode to episode idk#this includes ahoska but not like I dislike it really just#CERTAIN THINGS needed to be said EARLIER#I really need to say something nice on this blog um#reservation dogs is great

honestly How To Train Your Dragon is the correct answer, but the absence of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Beauty and the Beast is inexcusable. Hot but true take, modern Disney owes more to Alan Menken than Walt Disney. We have Frozen and Moana because Menken and Howard Ashman turned a pretty shallow girl-loves-prince story into something that sounded fucking amazing.
#mulan may be my favorite disney character but I can't say the soundtrack is anything special#and brother bear has some lovely music but they straight up took bulgarian folk music and shoved it into an indigenous alaskan story so ehn#the lion king is amazing but they cut one of the best songs and didn't even put it in the remake why have a remake????#but yes goddamnit john powell will never be properly recognized for his httyd work
