This full color double glossy page at the end of volume 10 of Yuzu and Mei's wedding is literally so beautiful. Especially since Mei has such a genuine happy smile on her face and they also seem to be wearing matching wedding dresses JUST like Yuzu talked about when they were in that dress shop. Right person, Wrong time

I used to never be a firm believer in this. I thought that in relationships, romantic or friendship wise, if we are meant to be it will work out no matter what. I have recently found this to be false. Sometimes two people can be perfect for each other, written in the stars but, still be a wreck together when put with each other at bad times. Sometimes both sides put in so much effort but it just doesn't work out because of the timing and situation. Sometimes the best you can do is put distance, it might hurt a bit at first but after some time, if you both really loved each other you will see how much you missed each other and maybe that time apart can be time used to heal up, and focus on yourself in order to better yourself again. If it is meant to be, it will be.

What do you think of the tumblr post “the Sexualization of Azula” by LOKGIFSANDMUSINGS

I have not read this post. However, I do think there is something troubling about the way they designed her character. Because someone sat down and decided that this 14-year-old girl, from a culture that is coded as East Asian, would have a design that made her look like an adult woman.

There’s been a lot of research done on how young girls are inundated by cultural signals that encourage/force them to grow up much faster than they are physically. That clothing choices for young girls match those for adult women in some ways, only smaller. And how this starts pushing a sexualization of young girls, becoming a vicious feedback loop.

In the show, there are two female characters in the age range of the main cast who wear makeup regularly. One is Suki, who wears the traditional Kyoshi Warrior paint. The other is Azula. Now, one can very much argue that, much like Suki, Azula wears makeup as part of her armor against the world. That she is playing a role and dresses the part. In-universe, I’d even think this is a very likely and clever parallel.

On the metatextual level, though, Azula is the one who wears the kind of makeup we associate with adult women. More than that, but the red lipstick is something that is especially coded by society to be sexual and seductive. Someone, an adult actually, sat down with a pencil and sketched out this character design. And multiple people saw it and approved it before Azula ever came to life in animation.

This was a design choice. And it’s a design choice on a main antagonist who is, again, from a culture that is heavily-coded East Asian and Southeast Asian. Which here in the real world, women from that part of the world have an extremely troubling history of being sexualized by Western media.

As a society, when confronted with a character design that has these features coded into them, we’re subconsciously told to ascribe the character the age that makes all of this “okay”. We need to see them as adults, because otherwise the cognitive dissonance is very, very troubling. Otherwise we get this very weird situation where the archetypal “sexy villainess”, in a setting with a lot of adults around and active, is...an eighth-grader.

(I think this is another reason why some people have a difficult time feeling sympathy for Azula. The visual cues in her character design tell us that she’s an adult with full knowledge of the consequences of her actions and full consent to everything happening. That she’s an adult with complete control of her own life and choices. Her very character design obfuscates the cold truth that she is the same age as Katara, that she is barely older than Aang and Toph.

And I really think that the show missed a hell of an opportunity to show and lean into this unsettling dissonance by not giving her scenes without makeup, to really drive in the point that the Fire Nation is eating it’s own children.)

Azula and Zuko - Parallels

These scenes in The Beach played an excellent parallel between the fire siblings, mainly on how they deal with emotional trauma or express their feelings -- and both of them are opposite and equally unhealthy about it.

The old summer house is a metaphor for more than just nostalgia:

Zuko goes there, entered the house, reliving all the old memories; taking his old family picture, the stone his mother made him press his small hand on -- Zuko indulging himself into this, no matter how sad or unhealthy it is, it's a way for him to make sense of things too. Azula, on the other hand, withdraws. She only gazed up at the house from outside, she didn't enter, she only decided to come close because Zuko was there, because she understands him, connects to him, then she tried to drag him out of his shell. In fact, she uttered what this place is to her and what it makes her feel "this place is depressing" she refuses to dwell into these feelings. However, considering the previous nostalgia she probably missed this place too but sees no good in visiting it though, so she refuses/afraid to approach it, but these buried emotions didn't die.

The parallel continued at the campfire: Zuko was shouting, arising his bad feelings all over, blown up the fire, then accepted a hug from Mai - Azula, on the other hand, was talking quietly, trying to be or sound detached/uncaring, gazing at fire under the ashes. The trauma can't be easily seen, a metaphor to the fire under the ashes, but it's there, and could results in a bigger fire; disaster, that eats her from inside more than it harms anyone else. Her eyes flick when she was deep in thought, this is the closest we've seen her dwelling into her feelings, not counting the explosive behaviors later. But she was as quick to rise her walls up again and pretend it's ok/doesn't matter anyway. She awkwardly withdrawn, but can't escape forever.
