Some people both here (the fedi) and Tumblr (where this post is automatically imported) don’t seem to grasp why the changes in Mozilla ToS for Firefox are so bad: you still can disable most of the data gathering they collect and sell, you could use one of the forks not under mozilla control, it’s still better than using chrome, etc.
And while all their arguments are right, I think they are looking at the trees and not seeing the forest.
The apocalyptic change here is not that you can or can’t still keep your data private. The issue is that in a time where the most used browser (chrome) is actively trying to kill the open web (see the the manifest v3 debacle and what’s going on now with chrome and ad blockers), and the third (safari) is just trying to be as closed as possible, the only free (as in freedom), open source, non-profit alternative just stopped being non-profit.
Firefox, even with its dismissing user share, has been the floodgate against Google attempts to commercialise even the most basic layer of access to the web. They have been the only ones operating on a “What’s good for the web” basis instead of “how are can make money out of our engine”. Mozilla split between Foundation and Corporation was kind of odd and hard to understand, but for years the foundation seemed solid enough to believe that the corporation was just a way to make sure the foundation was funded. But now that era is over, now Firefox is a for-profit software, and there is no browser engine with any significant usage that is not openly for profit.
This is a disaster for the open, free web.

No Amazon. No Walmart. No Target. No Disney. No Google. No Apple. No Visa or Mastercard. And especially no Facebook. I will not be posting on Meta platforms for the next 24 hours in support of the economic blackout.

the way my partner talks about my ocd is so hilariously on point. for context, i experience a lot of verbal compulsions (feeling like i Have to Say a Certain Thing to magically fix another) and he just told me. "most of the time it's easy to spot a compulsion cause literally nobody asked"

my brother had a brilliant idea that i wanted to share with other people who have four-legged family members: he trained our two cats to go directly to the door when they hear the fire alarm.
obviously at first the fire alarm sent them scrambling for cover, but he started slowly by giving them treats whenever it went off, when someone burned food or forgot to open the fireplace flu. he then progressed to calling them to the door to offer treats immediately after the alarm went off. and it actually wasn't too long before the cats voluntarily started going to the door upon hearing the alarm.
i think this was genius because in the event of a real emergency we know exactly where the cats will be and we will not have to waste precious time trying to find them to rescue them. i think this method would work equally well with dogs and probably other free-roaming pets such as rabbits, ferrets, etc. and i certainly encourage others to give it a shot!

People seriously underestimate the long term effects of constant loneliness
"why are you so weird?" Idk, maybe because being completely isolated while growing up has destroyed my brain and now I'm nothing more than a human-mimicking creature that bases all of my actions on what I think is normal human behavior rather than just doing things naturally

Just a psa for fic writers who use the “trauma bond” tag, please make sure you’re using it correctly. A trauma bond is not two people who experience similar trauma and bond over it. It’s a carefully curated, manipulative bond between abuser and victim to keep the victim coming back because of the addictive highs and lows that come with abuse.

If you want to tag two characters bonding over shared trauma, a good substitute tag would be “bonding over shared trauma.” Trauma bonding is, by definition, an abusive relationship and may steer people who have experienced it away from your fic. Please spread the word and happy writing!

I’m a huge fan of how rhodochrosite can either look like beautiful pink flowers, like pointy red crystals, like little Barbie-pink orbs, or like meat

[ image description: rhodochrosite in each of the previously described forms, ending with some rhodochrosite stalactite chunks that look like breaded hams and one piece that looks like a raw steak growing out of a rock. ]

giving birth sucks tbh. not only do you and the baby you’re birthing almost die, usually you shit yourself and often you tear your taint. then you have to push an organ out of your body (placenta) and if even a little of that remains in your body, you can hemorrhage to death or develop an infection that essentially rots your body from the inside out. even if you had a relatively “easy birth”, you bleed for weeks on end. even after that stops, your body and brain is changed for the rest of your life, the pregnancy leeched minerals from your bones, that can cause osteoporosis later. minor urinary incontinence is not uncommon, brain scans of people who gave birth show permanent changes in their brain, you’re never quite the same.
I say all of this not to say giving birth is disgusting but it is a harrowing and visceral experience. society downplays how fucking awful it is and makes it out to be a ~magical~ experience but it isn’t a magical transformative experience for everyone. it can be an extremely traumatic experience for someone who wanted to carry a pregnancy to term, much more so for someone who did not want to be pregnant in the first place or someone who knows their baby won’t survive the birth. anyway, abortion is a right. pregnancy and birth aren’t just inconvenient, it’s fucking awful.
