Gig Guide - Interview: Violetic
Ahead of their upcoming show at Barfly, London on Friday 26 Feb we caught up with Violetic to talk music, gigging and the future. Read the full interview below and listen to the band here http://www.soundcloud.com/violetic
It’s clear that you’ve been busy on the road playing shows; what are some of your most memorable moments from gigs and can we expect more shows in future?
Chrisy: The thing I visualize the most is when we played a show at The Finsbury last year and Mitch was playing guitar so hard that he split his hand and blood went everywhere!
Rory: Last year we played with this awesome band called Adolphus Tips. The venue was tiny but pretty full and I think it was the biggest audience we’d played to at that point.
Mitch: Supporting Marriages at Hoxton Square was a highlight for me and it was the first time I got a feeling that people cared about listening to us. Yes, we’re playing more shows across the UK this spring and summer.
With both a live and studio EP under your belt what lessons do you feel you’ve learnt from both these projects?
Chrisy: I basically have the same mind frame when it comes to recording live and in the studio. I just don’t wave my arms so much in the studio!
Mitch: I’ve learned not to overcook things to the point that you start editing out the little imperfections that actually turn out to be the best bits. It’s fun recording songs in the studio because you get to orchestrate parts more than you can in a live situation.
Rory: It was completely different recording the live sessions and the EP. Recording totally live definitely pushes you to become tighter as a band whereas working in the studio lets you listen to the songs from a different perspective and lets you hear things in a bit more detail, which you usually wouldn’t in the practice room.
youtube
As you tend to structure your songs in a unique style, we’d love to know a little about your song-writing. How does this process normally play out for the band?
Mitch: The best stuff normally comes out when we just play something spontaneous together and then we’ll work from that initial idea. I guess the song structures normally come from working in a linear way with the songs, just going where they lead us and not really worrying about what we should or shouldn’t do. I’m interested in how different types of music are structured. For example if you listen to something like the prelude to the first act in Tristan and Isolde there isn’t a verse or chorus, the melodies and textures follow the narrative and the developing feelings of the characters. That’s much more how I think about writing songs.
Of all the tracks that have been released so far, do you have any personal favourites?
Chrisy: I really like the sparseness of Ligature.
Mitch: Where we play Ethanol in the set has given me a new perspective on it. It keeps reinventing itself.
Rory: I always enjoy playing Bruiser.
It’s been great catching up with you and good luck with your tour. Can you offer us a few words about when can we expect some new material?
Thanks! Our next single Figure it Out will be up for streaming in March, and we’ll playing a release show on 22nd at Servant Jazz Quarters in east London. We also have some other shows coming up in April.
