Hello👋
Please take a moment to read my story.
I am Heba Al-Dahdouh. I currently live in the completely destroyed city of Gaza. Since the war on Gaza began on 7/1/2024, my family- my father Nasif, my mother Asmaa, and my siblings Khaled, Ahmad, Muhammad, and Malak-have been living in constant fear, crying, and suffering due to shrapnel, shells, and bullets.
Tumblr media
We have no food, no electricity, no cooking gas, no schools, no homes, no cleaning supplies, and no clothes. Our house was completely destroyed. My school has been bombed, and my brother Khaled's university is now rubble, depriving us all of education. The war has forced us to live in displacement centers, which are just tents unsuitable for living, especially in winter.
Tumblr media
Every day we live death, terror, and panic a thousand times because of the ongoing bombardment of my city. The war has killed more than 50 of my relatives and neighbors. At the start of the war, we sought refuge at my aunt's house, but it too became rubble. Imagine: we have survived imminent death more than 20 times and have been displaced among shelters more than 13 times. My siblings and I have suffered from many illnesses due to malnutrition, and we need medication continuously.

If we stay in Gaza, we might lose our lives. Recently, we have been seriously considering leaving Gaza for a safe place. However, travel costs are extremely high. We need over $50,000 to leave Gaza. Due to exorbitant prices, rampant unemployment, lack of security, the ongoing siege, and relentless bombardment, we have lost all our money. How can we live in such insecurity, with constant shelling and shrapnel flying above us? Dear compassionate friends around the world,
With your generous donations, even if small, you can save 7 people from imminent death, allowing us to start a life outside Gaza filled with love, peace, and hope.
With my warmest regards from the city of Gaza,
Heba Al-Dahdouh.

@figuwhump is SUCH a good idea for a prompt challenge, it’s delightful! I haven’t got time to do all 31, but I liked the July 7th prompt a lot so here’s something, uh, well, a day late and only kind of related to the actual pose. It’s Aminata on Eternal, because I’ve been Thinking about her.
dialogue is right from the book, tho’ I did abridge Incrisiath’s threatening monologue for ease of typesetting. A picture is worth a thousand words until you’re doing comics and then you need a truly stupid number of pictures to cover 96 words of dialogue, and my limit for this speech was three.

There’s actually a hidden meaning to Baru’s cryptarch title, Agonist, that’s not stated in the book. Yes, it’s explained she picked the name because it means “one who suffers”, and by god, she certainly suffers. But it’s also a term used in biochemistry, . It simply means a chemical that activates a receptor; for example, serotonin is an agonist for serotonin receptors. But there are two types of agonists - endogenous (ones that the body produces naturally), and exogenous (drugs). Keeping the serotonin example, the medication buspirone is a serotonin agonist, as it essentially tricks the receptors into thinking that it is serotonin.
And that’s just it! Baru is tricking the empire into thinking she’s faithful to them, that she’s a loyal agent. She’s doing the work they expect of her, and they are (hopefully) none the wiser. So when she betrays them, much like quitting a drug cold turkey, the empire is going to (again, hopefully) fall apart. I think this is an extremely clever hidden meaning, and since Seth Dickinson studied neuroscience, I think it’s safe to say they were aware of this definition when they gave the title to Baru.

Every time I hear the words “Spanish explorer” I think of that set of remains they found in New Mexico that belonged to a conquistador who was killed with a broad axe during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and how his skull was used as a model by Bone Clones so now everybody can purchase a version and see how he died like a punk bitch.

i'm not going to lie the way some tlt fans talk about baru cormorant really does both series a massive disservice, especially now that i've finally read the second masquerade book. "tlt are the funny sapphic meme books that don't have to mean anything and baru cormorant is the Serious Difficult Literary Condemnation of Empire for killjoys who only want to talk about imperialism"
like the only real difference between the two, and this becomes especially apparent after reading the comedy of errors that is the monster baru cormorant, is that the themes of imperialism, of homophobia (what do you think the necro/cav taboo is. lmao.), of transphobia, of racism are all very concrete in the text in baru whereas they're more abstracted in the locked tomb. i think this blatant depiction concerns and frightens a lot of readers who live in the imperial core, whereas in the locked tomb, many things are hidden away until nona the ninth. (and even still some of yall call BOE terrorists 🙄)
there's still way more similarities between the two series than differences. sorry that baru doesn't have none pizza left grief memes. i promise you that the second book (and what i've read of the third) is still really funny and gay and heartwrenching.
