Charles Shannon's picture (c1910) features his lifelong partner Charles de Sousy Ricketts at home in Chelsea - together they founded the art journal ‘The Dial’ in 1889 and the Vale Press in 1896; they were key figures in the London art world and hosted a wide circle of friends who included Aubrey Beardsley, Lucien Pissaro, William Rothenstein and Oscar Wilde.

William Rothenstein (British/English, 1872-1945) • Self-Portrait • c. 1925-30
I was struck by this self-portrait. William Rothenstein's gaze is direct and his expression is somewhat inscrutable. Clearly it's not a happy expression. Is it one of sorrow and resolve?
How do you read it?
