over/ for (due south fic)
Fraser/Kowalski (I mean, not technically but in spirit), rated G; tags: episode: s04e05 The Ladies' Man; 139 words
A/N: For @ds-c6d-snippets-blog challenge 32 "grief" and the RCW139 challenge. My title brain was offline today. Big thanks to @hwaetnot for various and sundry things.
read on ao3
Retribution is not a pretty word. It chews you up, puts blinders on your eyes, dulls the senses. Benton has seen men who broke themselves over it and men who broke others, has almost broken over it too, an eager wave of helpless fury.
Clearly, maddeningly, the retribution Ray seeks across the threshold of Beth's home, shoulders curled around his guilt like he wants to protect it from fading, is for his own crimes. Benton knows he can find it, hopes against hope he leaves it be.
Wither and wane. As he watches Ray, all defeat and no glory, splayed over the bed dull and heavy and still dressed, watches the uneasy rise and fall of his chest, the deep shadows under his eyes, he reminds himself—it's all that's left for Ray's grief now. To wither and wane.

Ficlet for RCW 139
This challenge is based on the ubiquitous due South number plate RCW 139:
write a snippet of 139 words, in three paragraphs, starting with letters R, C and W.
@ds-c6d-snippets-blog for tagging
Red suits her, but not me. That realization sits uneasy. The itching reaction is becoming more pronounced. My reasonable conclusion became I must endure. I can not scratch, even as her desire chaffs against mine. Reminds me mine exists.
Closets are wonderful to hide in, to find clues, to hear your father, or yourself think. But they are small and dark. Even within this fictious cabin. It’s claustrophobic. I can’t just contort to fit. Not a statue. Nor your canvas Dad. Children are a responsibility and take work.
Worry. Wearing me down. Homesick for white snow and winter’s cooling breeze on my weathered skin. Waiting for correct head wind, I’m west by northwest. Wandering Chicago wilderness anew, not knowing which way and willfully ignoring direction. What’s the difference between wants and being wise? Where are you Ray? Come back.

Snippet Round-Up: October 10 to November 7
Apologies, folks. I haven’t been able to keep up with this for the last month or so due to a myriad of issues, chief of which being that I still don’t have a working office chair. (I’m currently using a folding chair. It’s awful. Don’t do this.) Nevertheless, there have been many snippets posted during the last month or so, so the time has come for a compilation.
Oct. 11: “Alone” (Fraser/Kowalski, rated G, no warnings) [AO3]
Oct. 20: “Galaxy” (due South zombie radioplay, rated G) [LJ]
Oct. 22: “Jackpot” (Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio, rated E) [LJ]
Oct. 27: “Repeat” (Fraser/Vecchio, rated G) [LJ]
Oct. 28: “Free Rein” (Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio, rated T) [LJ]
Oct. 30: “Love Letters” (due South/Person of Interest, rated G) [LJ]
Oct. 31: “Abomination” (due South/Arch to the Sky, rated G) [LJ]
Oct. 31: “Trigger” (due South zombie radioplay, rated T) [LJ]
Nov. 7: “Issue” (due South zombie radioplay, rated G) [LJ]
Nov. 7: “Masks” (Fraser/Vecchio, rated T) [LJ]
Nov. 7: “Calculated Risk” (due South/Person of Interest, rated G) [AO3]
