On the Supposed Dissolution of Red Guards Austin

We have remained silent on the issue of the ostensible demise of Red Guards Austin (RGA) with their very mysterious single-sentence post both on facebook and their blog, but have been motivated by the abundance of responses elsewhere to say something of it. First of all we find it necessary to criticize, in the harshest terms, the opportunist and even anti-communist remarks by individuals and groups that seem to uphold the possibility of their demise as some kind of triumph. Let us be clear here: there is no triumph in the demise of imperialism’s enemies. RAIM has not kept secret our disagreements with Red Guards groups, but we have made a continual point not to air the dirty laundry of other organizations for cheap opportunistic gains.

Supposing that RGA has in fact dissolved, and that there is not some other explanation for their statement, we view this as a defeat, and a sober reminder of the difficulty present in building revolutionary organizations. It should be a reminder of how fraught the path toward revolution is, even in its most embryonic stages. Our first instinct in such circumstances should be to investigate the conditions that lead to the demise, and to properly understand them for our own sake, rather than proclaiming the victory of all who remain standing.

Let us remember that u.$. imperialism still stands, and stands much more firmly than the u.$. revolutionary movement, even in spite of its rapid decline. Those who paint fantasies in place of investigation are contributing to the degradation of the revolutionary movement, whose position is already miserably weak.

Postmodernism’s analysis of the social construction of reality is stolen from feminism and the left but gutted of substantive content producing Marxism without the working class, feminism without women. It’s an abstract critique of abstract subjects. The hall of mirrors (that’s plural) that much of postmodernism substitutes for any attempt to grasp a real social world is an ultimate collapse into liberalism’s relativism regresses. As mildly put by Alan Sokal and Jean Bricmont, “relativism is an extremely weak foundation on which to build a criticism of the existing social order.” Once postmodernism’s various acts of theft and sell-out are exposed, what is left is a pose, an empty gesture of theatrical anarchism (to which Marx’s critique applies), a Hegelian negation of the status quo (and just as determined by it), liberalism’s terrible child (many liberals look plenty grounded and engaged by comparison), a precious politics of abdication and passivism.

There’s no easy way to start off this post.

Brookhill Village in Charlotte, NC, is being demolished. Hundreds of African-American families are going to be evicted, and their are no plans to offer them any sort of affordable alternative to their homes, which are now being demolished.

Developers like Shook Kelley are actively demolishing the neighborhood and replacing it with higher-end housing that will “attract millenials” without a second thought of what will become of Brookhill’s current residents.

In other words, this is another step in the process of gentrifying Charlotte, making it essentially unlivable for all of the communities that have lived here throughout its entire history.

The developers and architects of this project to displace an entire community have continued shamelessly and unchallenged, what little publicity this event has received has been glamorous news reels, talking of plans to “revitalize” a working-class community.

This Thursday, December 13th, I hope that I can help change that.

A small organization has gathered around the purpose of offering some kind of meaningful resistance - I am proud to say that I have been doing what I can to aid in these efforts.

The main goal of everyone involved has been to organize a community meeting this Thursday in order to rally the community to defend their homes.

However, as you can imagine, this is not as simple as handing out flyers and expecting everyone to be there - I must once again stress that the residents of Brookhill are working class families who work long hours, and need a material reason to show up in opposition to a developer who is literally burning down flyers and posters that mention the event.

The organization, STP Charlotte, has vowed to do their best to provide transportation to and from the meeting as well as provide food and child care at the meeting itself. As you can imagine, this costs money.

If you have the money to spare, I ask that you send what you can to help organize this meeting. This really means a lot to me, but it would certainly mean a whole lot more to the families living in such a precarious housing situation.
