Were Pierre and George close at all in the final version? Even before or after the fic actually takes place!

so i flailed in bed seeing this question.

i will spoil stuff for possible future fics, so bewarned!

tw: heart attack (not anyone major)

pierre and george are good enough friends, not acquaintances, not vulnerably close, but they can get along if they're stuck in the same situation together.

this is inspired mostly by george saying he wished he got to hangout with pierre more, because he thinks pierre's the nicest guy in the grid. they've eaten dinner together, had parties. it's clear they match well, it's just that they seem to not have their paths cross that much.

i'll say, george in my fic does not even consider pierre as a partner. i want to experiment with the idea that george is within the aromantic spectrum, not really understanding his own perception of romantic attraction. but also, he does not find anything too special with pierre, because again, not close.

but pierre— i vaguely mentioned that pierre took up the gpda position after george left, and the reason mostly is that he's trying to reciprocate what george has done for him as a gpda director.

i'm specifically talking about suzuka 2022. i have an abandoned fic which i will absorb into this universe wherein pierre gets overwhelmed at a party after suzuka because he's not really over the traumatic experience that happened earlier— both the crane and the fia's indifference— and george runs into him in the bathroom and helps ground him.

it's such a simple interaction it kind of makes pierre. fall in love. but he doesn't really realize that until george left f1 in 2027 because the comphet is Real. the struggle he then faces is the empty space in the gpda that no one wants to take up willingly, so he does, because he wants to do what george did for him back then.

the only time they talk though would be halfway or a little past halfway of 2028, only because i think that's when pierre realizes he doesn't know what to do. but he wants to do bigger things— bargain for salaries, advocate for safety protocols. i mentioned earlier that he has this whole radicalization arc (thanks luigi mangione for the inspo lol), and i think it's because i feel one of his colleagues dies of a heart attack on the job, while pierre himself also crashes and gets a broken arm.

so pierre would have his turn on the introspection, of what does it actually mean to have a union in f1. he calls george for help, and well. i don't think they immediately hit it off well because while george is over f1, he's conflicted about busying himself with gpda business because it might just grow into another responsibility he'll worry about endlessly.

i don't have a concrete plot yet, but i really want to explore sexuality and capitalism and camraderie in pierre's storyline. i don't think they would end up together, not in the traditional sense, but this is where the whole phone call au becomes applicable as pierre consults george on a series of decisions he wants to make.

"WTF??" you may ask, and i say "don't knock it till you try it!" think of it this way: george is stuck up and hates himself a little and lance is just there and doesn't give a fuck and is the pillowest of princesses. unfortunately few see the vision so there isn't much, but i can't recommend enough Lesson Learned by bottomtxt who's also one of my favorite fanartist here on tumblr and the one who opened my eyes to this AMAZING ship dynamic! finger trap by rivalism is my other recommendation for this criminally underrated ship!

it might be January now, but we shouldn’t let that stop us from pausing and giving thanks for all of the joint posts, flirty post-race interviews, and homoerotic drivers parade moments that 2023 provided.

the year started strong with Alex being deranged about George on the Fast and the Curious podcast and posting about George’s birthday (#BadBoys4Life). George also moved to Monaco at some point and would later talk about how now that he was around Alex all the time, he was the happiest he had ever been in his life (this is a verbatim quote offered up completely freely fyi). 

but all that was a merely precursor for things to come. 

indeed, we had driver’s parades galore, and umbrella moments literally whenever it was wet (this feels true, don’t fact-check me on it). we had heart eyes so big before Vegas that it literally made the official F1 highlights video. we had George breaking into the Wiliams garage AGAIN. Alex said he would eat George if they were the last two people on earth, and all of the tumblr girlies obsessed with the erotic thematics of cannibalism lost their minds (it’s me, i’m tumblr girlies). we had George being president of the Alex fan club before Mexico, and Alex making dick jokes about a photo of George. George was bragging about being at Alex’s parent’s house, and when they filmed the 2019 rookie video, Liberty Media literally had no choice but to separate them with Lando, lest they start making out right then and there. 

a year in review would not be complete, however, without due consideration paid to the JOINT POSTING, which is rightly reserved for only the most important of Galex dates. the cancellation of Imola brought us The Monaco Run joint post (aka a hard launch, let’s be real), and the machinations of Netflix brought us The Padel Date (authors note: if other drivers were involved in the Padel Date, i have deleted that information from my brain, and i don’t want to hear about it. and anyways, it doesn't matter because according to George's story, only Alex was there!! no other drivers need apply).

it’s difficult to place any joint post above another for they're all special in their own way, but i need to start a whole new paragraph for The Monza Road Trip. what a weekend to be alive and on tumblr and obsessed with George and Alex. fresh off the love fest that was Zandvoort (considered in depth further on), the two of them were on top form all weekend (it was another albon defense masterclass and we got SIX alboints!!). we had an umbrella moment. Sky gave us a long-form post-quali interview with just the two of them so that they could engage in flirty ribbing and play footsie. and to cap it all off, George told anyone who asked (and many people who didn’t) all about how they were driving home together, just the two of them, alone. there were breakdowns in group chats the internet wide, and i spent approximately one million hours wondering who would drive. as we later learned, even though it was Alex's car, George drove (like a madman). erotic to me! you simply love to see it, you simply love to imagine situations about it. 

while Silverstone 2023 will go down in history as the day that we lost Alblondo, Galex carpooled to the track, and George was featured in Alex’s photo dump loitering by his motorhome with his feet out, it must be chiefly remembered for the frankly iconic press pen flirting that occurred. George literally crashed Alex’s interview to make sure that the world knew he was a “warrior”, as he had sustained a minor back injury in the car and was bleeding through his fireproofs. i could literally write ten thousand words and not even scratch the surface of this interaction. i simply urge you to rewatch.

but for the top moment of the year, in this writer’s humble opinion, we must turn to Zandvoort and the second-row Galex lockout. the head-to-head of their quali laps was deeply sexual, and George was out and out praising Alex on the radio. the driver’s parade gave us frankly uncooth flirting, and Alex was even flirting on instagram! i was dreaming of a Galex podium. George was dreaming of a Galex podium! i have never known such hope in my life! sadly the weather gods were not on our side, and despite Alex staying out for one million laps on slicks, Galex erotically spraying each other with champagne will have to remain in our dreams until 2024.

seven hundred words down, only one thing remains: to beg for the release the Qatar hot lap tape. when we found out that George had taken Alex on a hot lap before the Qatar GP, i remember thinking that i might be able to live with never seeing the video of it if it meant that they did it just for fun instead of as part of a PR stunt. that, my friends, was a lie. we now know that it wasn’t planned at all, and Alex had simply been jogging by and hadn’t been able to resist going for a ride with George. and still!! i need the tape!!!! mercedes admin, name your price.

while this is by no means comprehensive, this lil walk down memory lane was very fun for me, and i hope you had fun too! but more than anything, i hope 2024 blesses the galaxies of the world with [redacted for anti-jinxing reasons]. i’ll be praying nightly.

i have overwhelmed my alex and george tags so much that i fear i could never capture all of it but my galex key moment anthology is under the cut!!

karting/early single seaters

Alex thinks they met in 2011 but the footage in georges flip phone says he knew alex back in 2009.

Their first actual interaction (so far as they've told the world) was when alex was world champion with the intrepid karting team and bc he was their reference driver he was asked to help pick the drivers who were quick to replace him when he moved up and he picked george (and charles) so they were then part of that same intrepid driver programme for a while. Interestingly, alex was always at least one year above him bc of their ages and george says the fact they didn't really race directly against each other before 2016 was probably why they became such good friends.

They did a deep dive of their camera rolls from this time on twitch a couple years back and talked about the oldest pictures they have of each other in their camera rolls (1:25:36) which was cute.

2017

2017 is the year george basically lived with alex. They were also sharing a trainer whilst alex was competing in gp2 and george was in gp3. George was doing mercedes sim work at their factory so rented a flat in milton keynes near where alex lived but according to alex that rent was wasted money bc george had more meals at alexs' house than he did that year. Also as detailed in those links, the Great Mountain Biking Incident of 2017 occurred at this time so we have the fun mental image of george literally wheeling alex into a&e on a wheelchair bc that is an actual event that happened.

2018

George and alex both in f2 fighting for the title year wooooo!! They never really fought on track but we did get fun tidbits like when alex pipped george to the win at silverstone bc george had a slow pit stop and giggled about it in parc ferme (5:42) & these post session interviews.

also some incredible photoshoots.

2019

Promotion to f1!!! We started the year at winter testing and this nugget that they have both accepted that they are actually tied together by the strings of fate. They're doing fun media stuff like karting and bullying each other over percentage of apexs hit at the skypad (video). 2019 also the start of the umbrella sharing. They were just together a lot… more skypad analysis!!!

2019 also has MY personal favourite galex moment which was hockenheim 2019 and the 45 minute phone call galex had on the way home after george missed out on scoring what would have been his first point in f1 and only point of the season.

There was also the summer break and enjoying a training camp together, exchanging infections etc. Alex also took george to meet lily for the first time, bc that’s a normal thing to do.

There was also the rookie of the year vid, and the rookie season review vid at the end of the year. Much was happening.

2020

The year started with f1 trying to race during a global pandemic. Fun! On the singular media day before everyone realised just how stupid that was they were being annoying. The lockdowns did give us the twitch streams. George was initially so bad at virtual racing he had to secretly consult alex's brother for help behind alexs back. George was also actively seeking alex out like a missile at any given opportunity and at one point felt necessary to declare that he wasn't alexs boyfriend when someone asked if alex was going to be streaming that day. Anyway my lockdown twitchscapades tag has a post with a playlist of all the streams that haven't been lost or deleted if you want to feel joy and have a spare million hours.

Racing resumed in July with the covid team bubbles and within two races and one qualifying session george was defending alexs honour to sky sports and the world in a truly remarkable fashion.

At the end of the year alex was unemployed....even more tragic than this loss was that alexs career difficulties were so extreme he started ghosting george, which devastated him to the extent he needed to publicly drag him for it.

There was also george asking lily to post alexs n*des on instagram and lily responding with if anyone has them it would be you which was perhaps the last time george had access to his own social media password.

Despite george not liking it they celebrated alexs first podium by going golfing! and reverse! George was also gifted an alex albon signed autograph card for christmas and said that he'll put it somewhere special x

2021

The beginning of 2021 was during lockdown and there was more fun virtual gps except the only two drivers doing it were george and alex so they were just bitching and gossiping and threatening to steal strategies and abu dhabi 2016 each other. Particular shoutout to the time they had a virtual race on valentines day and alex put a suit on for it and george was baffled. Immediately after valentines day was georges birthday which lily used to thank george for letting her borrow his boyfriend from time to time.

Then the season started with george enduring the season alexless and not letting anyone forget about it. Alex was turning up to races after being locked in the simulator until the early hours posting stuff like this on instagram and otherwise stumbling over his words after getting whipped on the ass.

Perhaps the defining moment of the galex 2021 season was george pushing the williams board to sign alex so heavily that they had to actively shut him out of proceedings. Also at this time there was this cute congrats from alexs family and one from alex to georgie about the mercedes seat.

2022 had alex having his appendix out, nearly dying and alexs family updating george whilst alex was in the icu and then when alex returned for the next race in signapore a couple weeks later (insane behaviour) george was like mmm audacious of him to be here.

Elsewhere alex discovered georges photoshoot and was making screensavers about it. Alex also discovered hair dye and george was making instagram stories about it.
