Hello hi yes I return from my months of tumblr slumber with a new special interest (Carry On series) and a new fictional guy that I think is Neat and Very Autistic (Simon Snow)

evening all it's 4am which means obscure self indulgent Content time anyway not only is simon snow autistic, baz pitch is too:

-consciously! mimics! body! language!

-has a gift for languages (autistic pattern recognition/rote learning) but also a very idiosyncratic, hyperverbal, old-fashioned way of speaking that is out of step with his peers

-also good at music (another pattern & memorisation heavy discipline)

-studies throughout the summer holidays whether he has homework or not - meaning a) his academic success is not magical it is worked hard for and drilled in b) he likes to keep up a routine

-more awkward than he or simon explicitly acknowledge - sneers and laughs to cover up awkwardness, in some cases snarkiness is almost a panic button/script (not in terms of actual *words* being prepared, but in terms of hastily applying a v specific and fairly limited *kind* of speech to redirect to a social situation he is more equipped to handle)

-struggles to express his emotions and is very afraid of embarrassing himself and feeling weak, stupid or pitied (yes, trauma, but being autistic gives it another layer)

-his moral system is just as black and white and hypermoral as simon's, just in a different way: he can't allow himself to compromise on family loyalty for anything, even his other morals

-not good at or apparently interested in blending in with the crowd; he affects superiority but when he's being more honest he talks about feeling cut off and alienated

-"old soul" / feels like he's from an another time and doesn't belong in this one / doesn't like change

-doesn't seem to have many friends, but bonds with penny quickly and easily over shared interests and values, and has had a strong connection with simon for years through, again, shared experiences; neurodivergent bonding in action. the political division of the school keeping baz out of the autistic loser squad is just another of the mage's many crimes

-teachers' pet who resents his teachers. if you know you know

-knows about cars. that's prime rich old man special interest territory

-sensitive to sunlight, smells and loud noises at LEAST. do you expect me to believe a boy with vampire supersenses has no sensory issues??? i refuse

I’m not like, Saying simon has low empathy, bc tbh I think I’m mostly just projecting onto a character that shares a lot of my autistic traits, but like hey what if simon has low empathy? His black and white thinking extends to people (good side verses bad side, All Vampires Evil) in a way that is really easy to fall into if you struggle to automatically view others as having rich inner lives or being properly ‘real’. 

The scene with the dragon (which I know is an animal not a person but look. Still.) shows a bunch of stuff happening with Simon, like that he is desensitised to violence enough for it to be an instinctual reaction, and that’s a whole other fish kettle. But I’m also interested in how as soon as Baz gets on scene, he’s thinking why is the dragon here, what does it want, this is strange behaviour. None of that happens for Simon.  

Not to mention that even though he spends years analysing what Baz is thinking, it’s always from a logical ‘What’s He Plotting’ point of view. That he spends all this time analysing him at all without even slightly developing his view of Baz beyond this kind of cliched vampire villain stock character is kind of weird by neurotypical standards. 

Anyway there’s probably more but this was just meant to be a short post. I really Like that there’s a character who isn’t instinctively empathetic or emotionally intelligent but is still a hero. Simon does stuff like help solve the mystery of Baz’s mum’s death, that really has no benefit to him, even though he comes across like he’s bad at being in touch with other people’s feelings. He’s not a stereotypical hero in that sense but he’s still obviously trying to do the right thing, and that means a lot when traits of low empathy are much more often given to villains.

Simon snow is autistic this is my autistic headcanon. I was reading carry on again and there are a number of autistic traits.

He misses social cues. He literally says “what’s the etiquette?” Butter with a spoon if it was acceptable.

He tries to gather tons of information in order to puzzle together what baz is doing. Like 5th year, just collecting information and not want to miss anything. Seems like a very autistic problem solving strategy.

He says he’s not good with double entendre

He relies on Penny for knowing what the right thing to do is.

He love his uniform and doesn’t like to wear anything else.

He talks about his routines all the time especially mental routines. For example, he doesn’t think about watford until an hour before he gets there and then he runs through a very specific ordered list of things to miss. Also again with the uniform, he likes his uniform as a routine that he doesn’t like changed. Also going to visit Agatha’s family at Christmas is definitely a routine for him.

“At first, I thought he meant my actual sword” it clearly took him longer to understand the metaphor. This is an example of him taking things literally.

He talks about adopting things that others do, say, wear, etc. Specifically things the mage does but also Penny and just general social actions. Just a lot of social copying.

His magic definitely has some metaphoric meaning for me with regard to emotional regulation. He feels all his emotions so profoundly that they overwhelm him.

When he is staying a baz’s house he definitely doesn’t like being in a new environment.

Chewing and rubbing his necklace as stims. He does it enough to make it gold. Also bouncing the red rubber ball from when he was 11.

He talks about wanting to have lots of friends/aquaintences, though he frames it as not wanted to be ignored/disliked.

He specifically talks about wanting a map, a book, something that would make all of it (the world of mages) make sense. And honestly mood.

Of course a lot of his social confusion can be explained by him being the only mage raised in the normal world; however, as far as autistic metaphors go that’s pretty explicit.

“Just another thing I’ll never get right” when talking about posh things like horse shows that hit me where I live.

Simon “skipping the words to get right to the goal.” Simon has an odd relationship with language. See having speech therapy and not talking (could be about growing up in care but also interesting from an autistic perspective).

Simon is an awesome autistic hero.

Simon Snow seemed kinda autistic coded to me as an autistic reader but then it was mentioned that all his spells that were a play on words just turned out literal and that sealed the deal

I think also that the whole Chosen One thing kept him so busy for years that he- didn't really have time to try other hobbies? Like other activities or be interested in much else. I'm saying it makes sense to me that his special intetest would be a person when that's the most available thing!!

Okay so we know Simon is autistic, right? I was thinking about what his special interest is. I was half-joking when I thought “Baz” earlier, but I think he actually is Simon’s special interest.

Even when Simon wasn’t aware of his feelings he followed Baz everywhere, needed to know what he was doing at all times, kept trying to figure out what he was plotting, listened in on his fucking violin lessons, and his thoughts were solely “Baz Pitch is plotting and I have to know what he’s plotting because I just have to.” He was obsessed with Baz.

I don’t really know if this is coherent, it made more sense in my head.
