How we choose the best toilet brush
Most of us try not to think too much about what we are doing when we clean a toilet. But when we really considered it for our tests, we realized that the best toilet brush should meet some key criteria. The brush should reach all parts of the toilet bowl and rub it effectively. The holder should be stable, easy to clean, small enough to fit in a tight bath and designed to allow the brush head to dry. The brush handle should be long enough to keep the hand clean, but short enough so that it can work around the container, ideally coated with a nice material that can grip with a little force when actually rubbing. And the product should be cheap enough to replace it regularly without thinking twice.
Applying this criterion, we start with a field of more than 40 brushes. Some were prohibitively expensive, in reality, a bathroom brush should not be a big investment. Some were high-end brush holders with cheap brushes and non-replaceable inside. Many could only be purchased in one or two stores or online retailers, so it was not convenient to replace them when necessary. Most brushes simply had nothing to distinguish from hundreds of other cheap white plastic brushes. And some had terrible criticism. We looked for the brushes that people liked, with some basic feature to separate them from the package, and a combination of price and availability that would allow readers to buy one easily and replace it from time to time every year.
After reducing the field to eight finalists, I made the most obvious: I used them to clean toilets.
