Hi, I know this isn’t the kind of question you usually answer on here but I seem to remember you mentioning at some point that you were a biology major—how did you know you wanted to go into science? I’m at that wonderful point in high school where everyone has started asking what I’m going to major in and I don’t know any sciency adults irl to ask they’re all humanities people

Hi! Yes I did do biology and I really loved it. And I remember that point in school very well, it’s a tough time!

For me, I kinda always knew biology was my favourite and also something I thought I’d like to go into. Really what it came down to was that I was genuinely interested in learning about biology, like the content was something I found really interesting and it made me actually want to pay attention in class (rather than just paying attention bc I had to). It helped that I was also good at it, but I’d say I was probably good at it bc I loved it so it’s kinda a full circle I suppose.

If you’re struggling to decide what to choose, I honestly think that the most important thing is whether you actually enjoy it. Can you see yourself spending the next 3/4 years studying it exclusively? Would you want to get a job in that field? Obviously things like employability and that are worth considering (science is always gonna be a good field for that), but imo you gotta do something you like or else you’re gonna get so bored and then you’re not going to want to give it your all.

Hi, I found your account for the first time today and I’ve been scrolling and really enjoying your greys opinions. I saw you book recommended I Kissed Shara Wheeler a few months back and I just wanted to let you know that if you haven’t you should DEFINITELY read One Last Stop by the same author!!! Sapphic centered storyline. The author doesn’t consider OLS to be YA like they do IKSW, but it definitely scratches a similar itch. It’s so so good.

Oooooh ok ok I will be purchasing that immediately! I kissed shara wheeler was just so good, it really got me in my feels so to hear that the author has more sapphic romance out there and also some non YA is excellent news. Ohh, I recommend reading the works of Elphaba C. Snow Thropp. I esp love Can't Help Falling and Caught in a Wonderful Lightning Storm. Both fics were sadly unfinished :(

Also she has this oneshot fic that is so hauntingly beautiful, A Little Love Did This.

We're lacking in the new Calzona fics category, so I truly understand rereading those masterpiece. Looking forward to reading your update with tgu :)

I hope to! I have some drafts for a couple of bits and pieces that I’ve started, it just depends on whether or not I have the motivation to continue them. I’ll keep you guys posted when I have a better idea :)

I’m still writing it, very very slowly. My mojo isn’t entirely about at the moment so expect it to still be a while. That being said, I am cracking away slowly, and it will definitely be finished eventually. I’m really sorry for making you all wait! oof tell me about the timeline thing. You know what’s always confused me? So Arizona comes to work at grey-sloan, and meets Callie presumably a few days, or maybe a week, after. But then later Callie realizes that Arizona, before they got together, slept with a ton of nurses and doctors from other departments. My question: WHEN?? when did she have time to do that?? Either our girl gets around very quickly or the seattle doctor gays are all very well connected between programs. Make it make sense laur if you have an explanation i’d love to hear it

Ok ok ok ok ok ok ok right this is something that confused me for ages and ages and I remember ranting to my gf about it bc it made so little sense, like how did Arizona plausibly have time to sleep with that many people in what appeared to be like a week or so?? But then I read something that suddenly made it all make sense!

Basically, though the first that we see of Arizona is when she’s promoted to the head of the paeds surgical dept, this theory states that she actually started working at the hospital a while beforehand. As far as I can figure out, I think that she finished her residency at Hopkins and then was hired at Seattle Grace to do her fellowship, where she’d been working for an unspecified amount of time (I’d guess like a year) before Kenley died and she got his job. Though it seems like she’s new bc she crops up out of nowhere and no one has apparently ever seen her before, I think that that’s just greys being greys and not actually properly integrating her as a character that was already around. This would also make sense as to how Arizona already knew about all of the stuff with Callie and Erica so quickly (though her also finding this out within a week of being there isn’t that unfeasible it’s sapphic gossip lol). This does mean that we just have to settle with the fact that Callie is somehow so unobservant that she’d never noticed this woman before (bc surely paeds and ortho would overlap a bit) but honestly I find the idea of Callie being so absorbed in what she’s doing that she doesn’t notice the paeds fellow heart-eyes staring at her while she works quite fun. Ergo, she has like a year or more to do her thing around the hospital before she heelies into the show

I hope this makes sense, and please correct me if I’m wrong or you have a different theory!

I’ve also recently been reading Working for The Enemy which honestly is a good fun read, the plot can be a bit silly but overall I’m enjoying it

I next plan to re read Time Heals Everything (Except Loving You) bc I forgot it existed until like an hour ago and I don’t remember anything about it other than I really enjoyed it so I’ll share my thoughts on that when I get to it!

What are your favorite CalZona characterizations?

Oooh a wonderful question!! And one I have thought about before so I can answer it!

Ok so, for Callie, I love:

- Badass Callie who is super sarky and doesn’t like perky people… except for her super perky gf that she is absolutely head over heels for and she know it ruins her image a bit but she can’t even bring herself to care. I saw someone on Twitter discussing ‘golden retriever gf x black cat gf’ and I am obsessed with it as a calzona concept.

- Sports Callie. I’ve definitely discussed this before. I know it’s quite AU but I love a sports AU. And a ‘Callie is the top of her game’ sports AU is always a good one

- Business Callie. I can’t remember if I’ve talked about it before but like, Callie being the top of her game as a business professional walking around in a tailored pant suit and heels is such a vibe. Like in Bailero. I always picture her in the if/then episode. It’s a great time. (I also love passionate but stressed chaos genius Arizona in Bailero but we’re talking Callie here)

For Arizona:

- Top of her game good at her job Arizona is very important to me. Like, if she’s not totally bossing it then it doesn’t feel genuine

- Troubled Arizona. Hear me out on this one. I feel like Arizona can often be quite one dimensional (so like perky and chirpy) but there is definitely so much more to her that is neglected by the show. And I love it when writers explore that. I’m talking like fates collide Arizona, or scar tissue Arizona, or for love and softball Arizona (there are definitely way more). I just feel like there is so much to Arizona and her past and all of the shit that she’s been through that makes her her that can be explored in such a beautiful way.

If you’re looking at them as a couple, I think it’s really interesting how there’s a sort of spectrum of characterisations. Like, on one end you have badass sarcastic take no shit Callie and perky as fuck sweet bubbly Arizona, and then on the other you have super dorky endearing awkward Callie and super highly strung type A intense Arizona. And then you have anywhere in the middle of that. And I feel like they all work as long as they’re lined up properly, if this makes any sense. So like canon calzona are probably somewhere in the middle, probably more towards the badass Callie perky Arizona end, but all of my favourite fics are lined up somewhere on this spectrum. The key factor is that they all feel like calzona, and like what their relationship would be like if they had gone through different experiences etc. This feels like me chatting some real shit but I swear it makes sense in my head. Maybe I should draw a diagram lol

Are you the type of tv watcher who yells at the screen when they get frustrated with a character? Or just any other form of trying to talk to the characters through the screen? I’m curious because I do that haha not often just when something that particularly excites or irks me happens

It depends - if I’m watching tv with someone else then definitely. I love to narrate what I’m watching and comment on it, sometimes it annoys whoever I’m with but idc I enjoy it. If I’m watching alone I’ll invariably pause it and then go and rant at my gf about it. It depends on how invested I am though, often it’s only if it’s a queer character or a really stupid/unrealistic character that I find myself making comments! It is funny though, and the number of times I’ve called calzona stupid gays is a bit ridiculous lol

Yeah the next update will be the final chapter, it has just reached its natural end point! However I am planning to do at least one epilogue, perhaps two if I feel like it, so it’s not like it’s gonna be over over yet!

So how much do you outline vs make things up as you go when writing? Personally I just make it up as I go and it all seems to fit by the end, but i feel like there’s a whole range between that and outlining meticulously so i wonder where you stand

Hmm, I’m probably closer to you on that one. Like, I’ll have a idea for what I know needs to happen in the chapter, and generally at least a vague idea of what needs to happen in each scene, but other than that I kind of just go with the flow. Sometimes that ends up going exactly as I’d planned, other times it takes me in a slightly different direction, but as long as it fits with what’s happening then that works for me. I find it a lot easier to figure out what feels write for the characters and the story by just getting going. But I know for a lot of people that meticulous planning helps them get their ideas down better. It’s interesting how different people work differently!

Oh my goodness how was this ask 11 days ago, I’ve been putting it off until I actually had time to sit down and think about it! Which, luckily, now I do, so here goes! (These are all vaguely canon compliant bits of fluff bc I’ve missed them but obviously pls prompt me for anything more specific if you want!)

- The first time Arizona stayed over at Callie’s place, she woke up first and so got up to make them coffee. As far as Callie was aware, she’d picked the mugs at random - a dark brown stoneware mug with copper tones running throughout it for Callie, and a white mug with red swirled patterns on it for herself. Both mugs had been gifted and though they were nice, Callie rarely used them as she had a tendency to just grab whatever was in the front of the cupboard without looking, and they had resided in the back. But the next time Arizona stayed over, she used the same two mugs again, and then it sort of just became a subconscious thing - the brown one was Callie’s and the red one was Arizona’s. It wasn’t until they’d been together for well over a year that Callie actually thought to ask whether there was any reason to Arizona’s mug choices, and to her delight she watched her gf get all flushed and awkward. After a bit of prodding, she admitted that she’d chosen the brown one for Callie bc the colours reminded her of her eyes and the way that they sparkled when she smiled, and she’d chosen the red one for herself bc it reminded her of the pattern on Callie’s scrub cap.

- Arizona finds watching Callie re-locate someone’s dislocated joint incredibly hot. And she knows she really shouldn’t bc like, that’s a person yelping in pain. But she’s not watching the person, she’s watching her gf(/wife) braced on a table aggressively yet also skilfully yanking someone’s leg/arm/hip about, with that look of concentration on her face, and she can literally see her strength as she does it, and damn Arizona always finds herself exiting the room with an incredibly inappropriate flush on her cheeks.

- Arizona loves the beach - she’d talked about this many times, but it wasn’t until the first summer of their relationship came around that they actually managed to go. And then Callie also learnt that Arizona, being pale, burns really easily. Like, they made it home and though she’d sworn she’d topped up her suncream (Callie wasn’t so sure as she only recalled watching her do it once and knew she’d remember if she’d seen her gf rubbing lotion on herself a second time), she came home looking like a tomato. And though Arizona’s pouty face and bright pink nose was very cute, the whole ‘risk of skin cancer’ thing was not. And so, for the rest of the summer (and all of the summers after that), Callie carried around an emergency bottle of factor 50, for ‘just in case’. (Arizona complained that she wasn’t a child and didn’t need someone else to carry suncream around for her, but by the end of the first summer, she was halfway through the second ‘emergency bottle’)

- Arizona thinks that Callie’s thing for rock music whilst she is operating is both adorable and hilarious. Like, she finds it so amusing to sit in the gallery and watch Callie’s head bopping to the music whilst she is literally cranking a clamp into someone’s leg. But at the same time she thinks it is absolutely ridiculous. Like, on more than one occasion Callie has got a nurse to put it on when they’re operating together on a child, and every time Arizona lasts maximum five minutes before feeling like she’s going to snap, and no amount of watching Callie look all focused and happy is enough to prevent it. Once, she yelled at someone to switch it off, and the weird mix of angry confusion and kicked puppy-style expression on Callie’s face was enough to make her feel extremely guilty. It wasn’t great. Eventually they had talked about it, and they had agreed on a light quiet background music when the surgery was straightforward, and silence if it was more complicated. Arizona preferred silence all of the time, but she knew it made Callie happy, so she’d make do. As long as there weren’t too many heavy guitar solos.
