reacting to BTS!? (no more dream through run)

i am a huge kpop fan, but i have never listened to most of BTS' songs. i could name probably 5 off the top of my head, and i doubt i could even properly identify all the members. now you may be wondering, am i even a kpop fan if i don't know BTS? well... i only listened to girl groups until i got into stray kids in 2023. by that point, BTS was already on hiatus for military service, so i focused on listening to active boy groups like ateez or txt. i've heard a lot of BTS fans prefer their music pre-2018, so i'm going back to the very beginning and reacting to their earlier music videos. starting with their debut, "no more dream" !!

immediately RM's hair oh my god 😭 i can't take him seriously i'm so sorry. he's rapping so well, but his hair... nothing against the man like respect him so much and the hair is 100% just due to the fact that it's 2013 here but wow... wow.

i love the early 2010s korean style btw. the clothes and the way videos from that time looked. videos now are too high quality and idols look too polished at debut, let's put everyone back in sixteen-era twice fits!! i remember that one episode of sixteen where the girls from the minor team had to go to a market to buy their stage outfits with their own money, let's start making rookies do that again LOL

ok WOW that song was fun! the "such a liarrr" part will be stuck in my head for a hot minute. i need to listen again with lyrics...

omg this is back when there were no english lyrics on kpop mvs... insane. ok after looking at the genius translation page and seeing what the lyrics mean, i want to rewatch the video again. i like the message, that young people lack passion and they should have a dream. it feels fitting, especially for a debut, and especially since the members were so young at the time. they're following their dreams like in the song, and it feels authentic.

this song really saved bighit/hybe too didn't it...? like weren't they in the trenches/bankrupt before bts? and thanks to bts we now have le sserafim, txt, newjeans, etc. "thank you bts" we say in unison

all in all, it feels really cool to watch their first ever MV. i can't believe i've never even heard a SNIPPET from the song before... it feels so authentic and so different from their new (?) sound/butter/dynamite... how did they go from hip-hop to pop/disco? i guess i'll find out by watching their stuff and following their evolution :)

i imagine this one is a classic for BTS fans. it's not exactly for me, but it is fun and points to their group name (which translates to bulletproof boy scouts as i just found out a few seconds ago!)

i LOVE jungkook's look in this though, the shorts+leggings combo EATS, like the fashion at that time was so peak (zendaya shorts leggings snapback combo you will always be famous) and his hair/eyeliner ties it all together. wait. do i lowkey understand the jungkook hype now? he stands out sm in the videos i've seen so far, why was he lowkey a prodigy... he has so many lines and his presence on camera is already so good... (me discovering that the most popular member of a group is popular for a reason LOL)

also why is this song called bulletproof pt. 2 if there is no bulletproof pt. 1... army please help me >.<

ok i really liked this one. it felt like an adequate follow-up to their debut. the "dystopian" vibes were really cool too, very on-brand for the time (peak hunger games era) and the visuals are really good. love the red/white contrast. i like the music itself as well, the melody is gorgeous and the instrumental feels dramatic/almost cinematic. the dance break/outro (?) is really fun, reminds me kinda of skz jjam dance break. just a ton of fun. this one's going on my playlist :)

MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED

i am watching business proposal. long have i waited for some good food... and today, i get to feast. thank you business proposal thank you thank you thank you (thoughts below)

god, business proposal has everything. everything that i want from a good drama. and i'm only halfway through episode 2! it has:

female lead that acts her age

female lead with a personality

female lead i'd like to hang out with

female lead i could fall in love with

solid established meaningful believable friendship between the female lead and her bestie (they genuinely make me laugh out loud)

male lead that is a genuinely good guy and also has a personality and also doesn't make me want to fight him

solid established meaningful believable friendship between the male lead and his bestie (they also make me laugh out loud)

genuine chemistry between the two leads

(plus, all the actors really have excellent chemistry, they all play off each other SO well)

a side pairing that's just as promising as the main pairing

excellent comedic timing (i love a good ironic jump cut and this show has the art of them DOWN, the sound effects and visual gags are so great too. i giggle every time i see that damn cartoon dinosaur fly across my screen)

fun and unique twists on classic tropes/premises (CEO x employee, 'poor' x chaebol, fake dating, fake identity)

YES it has one of my all-time favorite classic tropes (fake dating)

a cast of characters that can conceivably exist outside the narrative (i.e., every character is solid and well done so far)

and as a result of that, the characters make believable choices inside the narrative they are in (meaning like i 100% believe tae-mu and ha-ri could end up in these situations even though they're admittedly silly asf)

characters i can crush on (sunghoon is SO fine???? the glasses stay ON. or off. either way, need him) WHAT WHO SAID THAT...

(ha ri is insanely fine as well. need her too)

all in all, this show is promising as hell after the first two episodes. i hope they keep up this good momentum because omg this is just stellar. 10/10 so far i'm not even kidding.

fr manifesting yotha and gun actually do talk through everything tho because 1) yotha doesn't even know the full scope of why gun is upset with him and 2) gun deserves an explanation and should know yotha's perspective before blindly forgiving him. i shouldn't even have to say this, but as we know, gmmtv bls are not the best with conflict/plot resolution. if this is resolved properly and the yothagun story ends well, this will be one of my favorite storylines to come out of a tv show ever. even if this isn't resolved in the best way, i can say with 100% certainty that perth and santa are one in a million. they are absolutely phenomenal.

MAN. this episode took me for a RIDE. it quite literally took me 3.5 hours to finish the episode because i kept pausing and replaying and reflecting and furiously typing out my reactions. i cried several times and laughed too. great episode.

ok.... prepare for a rant... im sorry

i can't really tell if i'm into this drama or not. i want to give it the benefit of the doubt and try to keep going with it... i at least would like to wait until djx starts liking sz back. rn it's kind of a hard watch since sz is crushing on djx but the audience knows nothing can happen at this point. i imagine there's another time skip soon (i looked ahead at ep descriptions, it's in ep 8 i think). i usually enjoy slice of life and slow burn, but something about this show doesn't feel warm/authentic to me? i don't have an attachment to the characters yet, and i feel like i would be by now if i watching a different show...

i think some elements of what i typically enjoy in a slice of life drama are missing for me. the only characters we see regularly interact with sz are her parents and djx (occasionally a teacher/yzr/sy's roommates). i like when there's a heartwarming group of friends or family to support the romantic side of a show. to me a romance drama is more enjoyable when the characters feel more alive/real– having friend/family interactions can support that. beyond that, sz seems to be lacking in character development.. is it just me, or do we know next to nothing about her except she likes to draw and she likes djx and she doesn't like school. she faces almost no adversity, she doesn't have friends that we see, but she isn't portrayed as a "loner" either. she feels kinda empty, right? just... incomplete. and she's on the screen 99% of the time 😭😭 you'd think we'd know more about her by now 😭

also i think i prefer to have the ML fall first in het dramas. which is just a personal preference obviously and not this show's fault. i also prefer to have a FL who isn't childish. and yes sz is literally a child, so i would have to wait for her to grow up to judge that aspect of her character fully. but she's also 17 right now, and she acts like she's 12. so. i am wary. lol.

jiaxu is a sweet character from what we've seen so far, he cares about the people around him and goes out of his way to help sz every chance he gets. we know he struggles financially, but after that, just like sz, we know next to nothing about him... these characters just feel so un-lifelike. and i'm feeling so emotionally disconnected from them. there's some sweet moments and funny moments. but they're just moments. 3 split seconds sprinkled in a 44min runtime...

and lowkey? i don't even believe sz has a crush on djx. because she doesn't act like she does. she just stares all the time. at djx or at the wall or anywhere, she's just staring blankly. no glimpse of yearning in those eyes. so that's throwing me off.

TL;DR: WHERE IS THE EMOTION?! WHERE IS THE YEARNING ?! THE SHOW IS LITERALLY CALLED HIDDEN LOVE. WHERE IS IT HIDING FR 😭😭😭😭 WHERE IS THE DEPTH? WHY ARE THE CHARACTERS SO 2-DIMENSIONAL?

idk. part of me wants to keep watching because i want it to get good, but the other part of me worries it's never getting good...

time for a new drama! (hidden love ep 1 thoughts)

i have had this drama on my list for a while. i tend to shy away from longer dramas as they are often drawn out with ridiculous plotlines and i quickly lose steam watching dramas i'm not completely obsessed with (i've been on episode 9 of lovely runner for months, i never finished what's wrong with secretary kim, and i will forever have 13 episodes of word of honor left). but! i have heard this drama is good. i enjoy stories about long-time unrequited crushes, this series is generally well-received, and i need a show to be consistent with that i can also watch while i eat. so, new het drama it is! i hope i won't want to drop this... let's start hidden love.

off the bat, just from the intro: the male lead is pretty :)

also what is the age gap here... she looks 12 max and duan jiaxu is a freshman in uni at the very least... 😭😭

ok reddit is a huge help as always -> apparently the actress for young sang zhi was 11 in the earlier scenes even though she's supposed to be portraying a 14-y/o. plus the actor for duan jiaxu is the same age throughout (26) even though he was supposed to be 19 when they first met. i guess a 5-yr age gap isn't that crazy once they're adults, and reddit clarifies the ML isn't going to develop feelings for the FL until she's no longer a minor. so... it's not crazy. but the portrayal did cause me to google. so. there's that.

well. the 15 year age gap between the actors at this point in the drama is throwing me off but let's finish this ep before deciding how i feel...

oh hi she's older now. that's. better. but why is she acting more cutesy than she did when she was younger 😭 idk if i can do this bro... she's supposed to be in 11th grade now, so she's... 16? 17? ok sure. then duan jiaxu is... 21-22.

ok episode 1 done. you know what, that was sweet so far. i feel like i would enjoy watching the wait pay off once everyone is of age and the feelings become mutual, so i think i will continue. honestly, the major thing that's throwing me off is that they started with the characters' age gap seeming way worse than it actually is. a lot of shows where a character has liked someone for a while with an age gap demonstrates this through flashbacks instead of starting with the initial meeting and continuing in chronological order. it feels kind of odd to watch a character portrayed by an 11-y/o begin to develop a crush on a character portrayed by a 26-y/o, but it would feel less odd with the establishment of their age gap and the FL's feelings before a flashback. it already felt way less odd watching the two main actors interact "3 years later" despite the age gap still being "the same" even if the FL still acts like a child at this point. so maybe they could have showed them meeting and continue through the unpacking scene, then flash back, then return to the "present" (where sz is 16). i'm remembering how tcgf did this: with them being ~800 y/o in the first volume then showing the child/teen first meeting in the second volume. but that's just my two cents of how editing could make the premise seem less strange off the bat.

all in all, it was sweet. i like duan jiaxu so far, he seems like a hard-working and caring guy, which will be fun to watch in later eps once this nature is directed towards sang zhi in a new way after he starts developing romantic feelings. plus. pretty. did i say he's pretty?

fav dramas of 2024!

as 2024 comes to a close, i wanted to recap my favorite dramas that came out this year <3 i will also have an honorable mentions category for the dramas i loved this year that didn't come out in 2024 !! let's get into it :)

easy #1 for me is My Stand-In. i usually hate "toxic" tropes—they're often there to stir up unnecessary drama that lengthens run time rather than adds to the story—but this show is my exception. the ridiculous isekai-adjacent (?) premise is balanced by the incredible characters, actors, and overall progression of the main characters' relationship. this show won't be for everyone (and many, many people have made their opinions on it clear), but My Stand-In feels like it must have been in a laboratory specifically for me. top-notch hurt/comfort, excellent character dynamics, insane chemistry, and a surprisingly soft sweeping romance hiding underneath the craziness (hint: no, it isn't a revenge isekai). 10/10. (bl, thailand)

the on1y one could have been #1 for me if it weren't for two things: one: the perfection that was MSI, and two: the ending. if you're looking for a satisfying ending, you may want to wait until a second season of to1 is announced (good luck). however, if you want to watch an honest and beautiful coming of age story that feels like a nostalgic look through someone's time capsule (a la When I Fly Towards You but make it early 2010s and sprinkle in internalized homophobia), drop what you're doing and watch it now. the cinematography, color grading, music, and dedication to being an early 2010s "period piece" is perfect. i love that the "romance" isn't at the forefront (hardly any "romance" takes place at all if you're going by typical bl standards). the two boys' increasingly close bond is the beating heart of the show, but it feels more like the viewer is a fly on the wall of everyday scenes in these peoples' lives. just a gorgeous slow burn slice of life drama. (bl, taiwan)

speaking of slice of life, only boo! is a show that surprised me a lot, in a good way. it's a sweet slice of life story with hardly any drama, just good vibes. any possible negativity or drama that arises is resolved almost immediately thanks to the unwaveringly positive main character (MY SON. BTW.) and his mature way of going about communication in his relationships despite his naive appearance. his love interest is a complete green flag as well. green flags allllll around :) just go watch it. this show is a breath of fresh air in every sense and i can't wait to see more from these two actors in 2025!! while we're on the topic of gmmtv series, We Are pleasantly surprised me as well. i wasn't on board immediately, but i found myself anxiously awaiting each week's episode as time went on. it's a cute uni slice of life story with a large ensemble cast, and they're all besties !! :D with four main couples to root for, you're bound to love one of them (i'm a tanfang girlie myself), yet the couples aren't the main focus of the story. the beating heart of We Are is the friendships binding the whole group together. there's a very Friends/The Office feel to it—you're starting off just taking glimpses at these characters' lives, but before you know it, you're deeply invested. however. winnysatang... please go to the aouboom university of chemistry and acting. please. honorable mention of course to the kdrama that took me completely by surprise: Light On Me! i was expecting nothing going into this show as it had gone completely under my radar since its release in 2021. and yet, i was given everything. we should know by now that i love a good low-stakes slice of life drama. this one is perfect. i love my 16-episode kdramas, and this is the first and only 16-episode bl kdrama i've heard of. while it may be low-stakes, it has strong, complex, and life-like characters who move the plot along. and for once, i'm not mad to have a love triangle. i do think this show suffered slightly from being 30 minutes per episode (rather than the traditional 1-hr), but with the runtime and budget?? i am convinced they couldn't have made a better show. i'm glazing it so hard but it's just that good trust me 😭😭 this show had me pausing and running around and i haven't done that since like early high school LOL.

less honorable mention to the show that could have made this list until something changed my mind—Jack & Joker. spoilers because. i'm mad.

J&J had it all, man... the heists, the sweeping love story, the hurt/comfort, the lovable side characters... but jack.... that character got on my last nerve, especially towards the end. it felt like he was doing everything in his power to misunderstand joke and ruin his own life/relationships. the writing fell off a bit towards the end as well—wtf was that "ring of power" to "oh jk it's not a powerful ring at all and we were just kidding!" plot at the end bruhhh don't pmo... all in all, this show was nearly perfect until the last act. joke was one of my favorite characters of the year, too. the show just fell off though. sad :( well, there's other programs.
