March 20th
I’ve hit the point in this blog’s evolution where there’s not a lot to write about unless there’s new shows (either actually new or new tapes). 644 posts deep, I’ve covered *close* to the entire recorded history of Ryan Adams.
So, the blog’s been pretty quiet lately, I know. The show lists for January and February were empty, unless I filled them myself, and honestly, I haven’t had the time and inclination to do that lately (some of it’s personal, some of it the recent news - which, short version, hasn’t dimmed my love for the music but had dimmed my energy to write about it a bit).
In this process, I skipped even writing about the fourth anniversary of this very blog, started on a frustrated day at my old job when I decided what I needed to make my days better was an excuse to write about Ryan Adams shows. In those four years, it’s grown into so much more than I could have imagined, mainly thanks to the wonderful tapers who’ve shared shows that otherwise might be collecting dust.
But there it was, sitting on my show list - the fourth and final available tape of the last Cardinals show. 10 years ago to the day.
I’ve written about my experience at the show before. (http://dradaybyday.tumblr.com/post/141368550104/march-20 and http://dradaybyday.tumblr.com/post/158627357524/march-20) It’s still one of the most memorable nights in my life. 10 years later I can still see myself sprinting through the airport to get there, the way the band looked in the theater, meeting Jon Graboff on the street after the show. That I had a piece of something called Coca-Cola cake in a diner down the block from the Fox after the show. That a guy gave me a card for free entry to a strip club, which I did not use but might still be in the side pocket of my travel bag as a memento of that night. Being there that night meant so much to me because that band meant so much to me.
When I think about that night, there’s a lot to the memory besides the show. I liked the show a lot, although from a pure musical sense, it’s not at the top of the Cardinals shows I saw. But it’s really about me taking a journey alone, and that journey was mine. Even the shows that I do remember fondly are mostly because of the way the music effected me that night. And so no matter what I feel about Ryan Adams today (it’s very, very complicated), those memories are mine, and I’ll continue to love them.

2018 Year in Review - June 14
Ryan only played a few shows this year, and we do thankfully have them. The big show for the year was Red Rocks, and here it is, although the sound quality isn’t the best (listenable, though). Pretty rare take on Tightrope. Cold Roses is a full 14 minutes, but it doesn’t really go anywhere too interesting until the end. Big highlight is the awesome First Aid Kit guesting on Oh My Sweet Carolina - they sound fucking terrific. My Wrecking Ball pops up for only the second time in the last couple of years after being so common during the S/T tour. The show is capped with Jacksonville Skyline, dedicated to Ryan’s late brother Chris. Very much worth a listen.

This show is one of my great regrets as a music fan.
In the fall of 2003, my passing interest in Ryan Adams was becoming a full blown fandom. The story of Love is Hell and Rock n Roll had me fascinated, and those records were probably my favorites of the fall (other than The Strokes’ Room on Fire, of course). I wasn’t a full blown concert nerd yet, but I was seeing more shows (the Strokes again!). I was going to college in suburban Philadelphia, a pretty easy trip to the Electric Factory, where I saw a number of shows over the years. And so, I have no clue how I missed going to see this show.
And it’s not just a “oh, hey, that looks like it was pretty good” show. This is a tour de force of musicianship and insanity. The band plows through most of Rock n Roll (I’d never get to see most of these songs live), and a chunk of Love is Hell, including the first ever performance of Please Do Not Let Me Go, which would become one of my favorite DRA tunes. There’s TWO super bizarre versions of Firecracker, Whiskeytown (not exactly common in 2003, or for many years after), a wild jam version of New York, New York that morphs into Wharf Rat (and segues straight into a heavy 1974), a killer acoustic encore with Ryan trying to remember Where the Stars Go Blue for a newly married couple (charming) and the rare My Father’s Son (aka Not Gonna...), and really nice takes on This Is It and La Cienega. Plus, oh by the way, the only time Avalanche was ever played - although Ryan can’t even finish the song, because he’s given so much on stage that his voice is fucked. It’s still beautiful. Gives me goose bumps every time I hear it.
Un-fucking-believable.
Shoulda been there.

Long Gold tour show from Minneapolis. Ryan dedicates Nobody Girl to “victims of award winning actresses.” The band plays When the Stars Go Blue twice, but it’s not different versions - Ryan just wants to (although the second version does have a punk rock outro). Ryan’s Bob Dylan impression is pretty spot on. The band crushes Gram Parsons’ Sin City. There’s a stretch of unreleased tunes on the encore that blends together and is a very interesting listen. First and only performance of Slave, and first (and one of two) for Honey I’m Just Trying to Take You Home. Last ever (one of two) performance of Lord, Tell Me How It’s Gonna Be. Also, Ryan speaks positively of Lost Highway records, so you know this is a unique experience. Recommended show.

Partial FM broadcast of this 2002 show, but at least they do capture some very rare songs for us - Twice as Bad As Love and Thank You Louise (one of 6) from Love is Hell, the first ever (one of 4) Learn How to Say Goodbye, and Whiskeytown’s Ball of Carol Lynn (one of only 8). Worth checking out those tunes for sure.

Cardinals set from the 2007 European tour with a very quiet Ryan, although some excellent playing. Very good AUD tape, and a good listen all the way through, but Ryan is very quiet and it sort of lessens the energy. Tricky balance for him - too little talk and it’s too quiet, too much and it derails the flow, but this one definitely leans on that former designation. Second set is all acoustic, which they did a bit on this tour, and it produces some cool takes on the songs (especially Peaceful Valley). Not sure if it really stands out from the other shows on this tour, but it’s still a good one.

Another Heartbreaker UK tour soundboard. Ryan is feeling a bit spacey, but it’s a good performance, heavy on unreleased material. Debut of Tell It To My Heart (which would only be played four times, all that week). Very much worth checking out, chill way to spend 90 minutes.

Some very deep cut highlights here. Ryan is joined by Michael Blair of the Swedish Sessions for You Will Always Be the Same, Madeline (one of 8), For Beth (one of 2, last ever), and Prison Letter. Early performance of Wish You Were Here. Not a great recording, but good enough to at least enjoy those rarities.

Really fun show from the Heartbreaker tour. Was apparently really in the mood for acoustic DRA today and it hit the spot. Ryan has just written Chin Up, Cheer Up during the opening set, and plays it to start the show. He plays a lot of of his newly written songs, including Memphis and God Bless the Week. One of only three performances of Young Boy / Young Girl. Last ever performance of To Be The One.

Decent tape of a pretty interesting show from the 2004 tour. The band set is pretty straightforward (although we do get Chin Up, Cheer Up), but this leads to an interesting and chat heavy solo set. Love that he brings Jesse Malin back for Solitaire at the end - such a great tune.

Happy birthday to Ryan! On this day in 2011, he played a show with a pretty batshit setlist that hasn’t been up on archive.org before, taped by the tireless Tom Bauer. This was the first time he played Somebody Remembers the Rose in 10 years (he played it a few other times in the weeks following), which, along with Avenues and Jacksonvill Skyline, makes this an easy recommendation if you’re a Whiskeytown fan. This is also the last time he’s played Withering Heights (8 total), and one of the last for Evergreen. Plus When Will You Come Back Home and This House is Not for Sale are a pretty awesome combo. Solid sounding, tape, too - worth checking out for sure.

Given the lack of soundboard access on the Ashes and Fire tour, broadcasts always become easy recommendations. This was actually the earliest of the tour (before the Live After Deaf shows were released). This is an incomplete stream of the show - missing 8 songs (full setlist here - http://comepickmeup.org/?page_id=6&show_id=882), although nothing rare, thankfully. Ryan’s stomach isn’t feeling well here (as he sings about in the improv), but he still sounds great.
