can a chronic illness be considered disability? i don't want to coin the term, but i feel like having days where its hard to move and do things IS some sort of disability, even if i push and force myself to go about my day regardless..
The definition of a disability reads as follows: a physical, mental, cognitive, or developmental condition that impairs, interferes with, or limits a person's ability to engage in certain tasks or actions or participate in typical daily activities and interactions
---
Does it limit your ability to participate in daily life? That is a disability. No amount of trying hard changes the fact that it's there and you're having considerable trouble. If you're not comfortable picking up that label, you don't have to.
If you are worried you don't ''count'' and want to be validated: You do count. That label is for you.

New favourite thing to do is to remind people of how much they hated lockdown when they say they wish they could stay home as much as I do.
Like no you dont you were miserable when you were forced to stay home all day everyday for the good of your health. Thats my entire existence as a disabled person so pack it in.

Being too disabled to work is not a “rich person thing.” People who are not allowed to have more than 2k in their bank accounts are not rich lazy upper class people lol. And if you try to argue that “well if you aren’t rich how do you expect to survive without working” I’d like to remind you that lots of disabled people who can’t work don’t actually survive.

I feel like half the time I'm like: "Yeah, I'm completely fine and used to this"
And the other half the time I'm: "I am slowly being torn apart and I cannot do anything about it, so I grieve myself and what I wish I could do."

One major factor that makes the nature of psychiatric treatment intrinsically violent is the fact that the boundaries of the patient is considered an obstacle to treatment. The lack of consent of the patient is considered an obstacle to treatment. These obstacles are abhorred by psychiatry and considered things that much be broken down. If the patient has a disagreement with the treatment, or objects to it, this is considered a symptom and therefore is seen as something not to be validated or respected. Thoughts, behaviors, beliefs; these are all considered symptoms if they are in opposition to treatment and must be broken down. However, compliance with treatment is almost never seen as disordered or symptomatic, even if the patient is fawning or similarly complying to avoid more harm done to them. The fact that only extreme compliance is accepted by psychiatry is inherently violent and conditions people to accept abuse. Isolation and violence are not vectors of healing.

Video description:
Cory, a man who uses a powered wheelchair, addresses the camera from an airport. He wears a gray hoodie and jeans and his legs are crossed. He shows off a Wheelchair Survival Toolkit, a small rolled-up fabric toolkit in black. The Toolkit is unfolded to show some of the tools inside, including hex keys, pliers, and tape. Cory finishes the video from a different location in the airport.
Transcript:
"This is the Wheelchair Survival Toolkit. It has all of the tools you would need if your wheelchair is damaged by an airline. It's got everything from hex keys to screwdrivers to duct tape to zip tis, all kinds of products. It easily went through security this morning so it didn't have any issues at all and now, I'm getting ready to board my flight. "The Wheelchair Survival Toolkit easily unfolds so that it can stay in a compact space. It also hangs easily on the back of my power wheelchair. This enables me to travel with peace of mind.""The Wheelchair Survival Toolkit easily unfolds so that it can stay in a compact space. It also hangs easily on the back of my power wheelchair. Oh I'm pissed off about a very niche topic so you're all in for it.
Since it's holiday season soon here's a PSA: if you're able-bodied and have a disabled friend/relative/etc who has not voiced a wish to receive any kind of disability aid (be it canes, gloves, crutches, any assistive device etc) as a gift... Do not gift them disability aid as a gift.
Firstly, you likely don't know their needs. Disability aids need to be customised and often personally fitted, and the chance that you'll get an item that they cannot use or do not even need is extemely high. Yes, even canes.
Secondly, disabled people are people who have hobbies and interests. If you default to the fact that they're disabled while choosing a gift instead of what they're interested in, think about why. Do they want to be reminded of their disability during an already stressful (and therefore likely to cause a flare up) time of the year or not? How can you be sure it wouldn't make them feel worse?
This obviously doesn't apply if the disabled person expressed the fact that they want to be gifted disability aids, be it as a statement or a hint. However, even in that situation, going with them and helping them pick the aid & pay for it is infinitely more preferable to blind buying in most cases.
