Kitchen Backsplash Tile Ideas to Rev Up Your Kitchen
Kitchen Backsplash Tile Ideas to Rev Up Your Kitchen
Backsplash Tile to Rev Up Your Kitchen The backsplash is one of the most conspicuous areas of the kitchen. So, if you want to give your kitchen a swanky new look, adding a new backsplash is a great idea. If you need to remodel the kitchen on a budget, a change in the backsplash area is recommended because the compact area will give you maximum return at minimum cost. Tile backsplash is in vogue now. It looks good, is cost effective, protects the kitchen and is a song to install. One of the reasons for the popularity of the tile backsplash is the fact that it is incredibly easy to put up. Whether the current backsplash is painted drywall or an old tile backsplash, setting up a new one is not difficult. Just be careful with the color and pattern that you choose, and make sure that it sits well with the rest of the décor. Backsplash tilescome in a number of tile designs and colors, making it easy for you to select a pattern and color that matches your kitchen. The checkerboard tile backsplash is a popular design. One easy way to get your checkerboard backsplash tile up and finished is to use stick-on tiles on plexi-glass. What you need to do is to get the exact measurements down on the plexi-glass and cut the glass to suit the dimensions accurately. Then, mount the plexi-glass on the backsplash area by drilling holes and fixing screws. After the plexi-glass is secured safely on the backsplash area, start sticking the tiles, alternating the light and dark shades. Peel and stick vinyl tile backsplash is another easy to use option. It is recommended that you start off by creating a template of the backsplash area. Play around with the colors and patterns before you finalize a design. You can simply stick the vinyl tiles as per your template and smooth them into place using a rolling pin, if necessary. Pull on the outlet covers after all the tiles are firmly in place.Contemporary: Glass tiles and marble can be used creatively to give a contemporary and artistic new look to your kitchen. Spread thin-set on the backsplash area (it dries quickly, so take small areas at a time) and glue the glass tiles on to the wall. Do the same with the marble tiles too. The paper on the tiles may be removed (after sticking them on) by wiping the tiles with a wet sponge. Grout should be applied only after 24 hours. Mosaic: An all time favorite, the mosaic tile backsplash gives an instant face lift to your kitchen. However, the installation process is somewhat more complicated. Therefore, it is better to select a pattern, procure the materials and use the services of an expert. In case you have an existing tile backsplash, remove the tiles completely. If the area is covered with painted drywall, install the tile backsplash over it directly. Before you install a new backsplash, measure the dimensions accurately, from the top of the counter to the bottom of the cupboards. Kitchens are a particularly difficult area of the home to design but incredibly rewarding when done right. In designing for kitchens it’s necessary to balance style with functionality. Because of its large amount of potential uses the kitchen presents homeowners with a wide range of decisions to make. For instance, a kitchen in a home with a large family should be designed differently than a kitchen that serves only one or two people. With this in mind let’s take a look at an area of kitchen design that can be easily overlooked but is essential for the cohesion of any design: kitchen backsplashes. Like most kitchen designed choices there are a plethora of backsplash options to choose from. Here we’ll cover a very popular option and a less common one. Tile Backsplashes Tile is the most common choice for backsplashes, and with good reason. It has a lowerer price point than most options and comes in a variety of materials, shapes and patterns. Tile is sought after because of all the different design options it offers. Everything from ceramic to granite tile have worked their way into kitchens worldwide. So whether you implement tile in a simple design or an intricate mosaic, you’ll have a long line of design conventions to lean on. Back Painted Glass Backplash These types of glass backsplashes are much less common than tile. They’re great for homeowners who want a very modern and contemporary look to their kitchen. It’s recommended that the installation of back painted glass be handled by professionals since it’s usually installed in one large piece. Unlike tile, glass backsplashes are grout-less and non-porous, which means you don’t have to worry about mold or any difficulties in cleaning. And with a tempered glass backsplash you don’t have to worry about it buckling under the heat of your kitchen. The same can be said for the paint. Premium glass paint has been engineered in a way to create a permanent bond with all types of glass, which means it won’t peel or fade due to heat and moisture. Travertine is a type of tile comprised mainly of limestone to create a strong, natural, and beautiful design that gives your kitchen something to be proud of. While it is not immune to the rigors of time, it will give you many long years of happiness as long as you make use of it in the best possible ways. For ideas of how to make this happen, look no further. In the following ideas, you will find ways of protecting your walls and your backsplash from unsightly food stains. To get started: Make sure that it is easy to get to. Nothing is more frustrating when cleaning up than not being able to get to the hard to reach places. Design a way to make it happen for your particular height and physical ability, if possible. If not, make sure that you are careful about where you choose to engage in food prep within your kitchen. Arrange it in the area where you do the most food prep. As an extension of the first, you should always try to set up a comfortable and convenient location for food preparation, such as trimming fat and skinning potatoes. Food splash is inevitable the more cooking that you do, so don’t be afraid of it. Just make sure that when it occurs it’s just as easy to clean up. Clean at regular intervals. Try to clean before you eat. While you’re still active, it is easier to bring yourself to do so, and the food splash materials are fresh, so they don’t have time to settle in. If you wait till the end of your meal, that could give it time to harden, and you will likely be too tired to engage. Taking a few moments after prepping the meal can save you minutes out of every day and avoid long term buildup. Blend the rest of the kitchen to suit the natural limestone materials. Try to choose the same color schemes as the limestone material. If you want something more bold, then perhaps try a navy or black to contrast. You want your backsplash to be functional, but you also want it to look nice before and after the meal. Use as much as possible to protect the paint on your walls. Backsplash is much easier to clean. Be liberal with it around areas where your wall is the most vulnerable, and you won’t have to constantly be repainting. Watch for damaged tiles and replace immediately. Not only are they eyesores, but they can create hazards throughout the home. Take care of business sooner rather than later whenever possible. Your kitchen is what you make it. Choosing and maintaining the right backsplash gives you one that you can be proud of. Your kitchen backsplash can accent your kitchen and it can be both functional as well as beautiful since it can be crafted from such easy to clean materials as ceramic and stainless steel which are two of the most popular types of kitchen backsplashes.. Whether you are changing the look of the backsplash or adding one this can be a quick and easy way to brighten up an existing kitchen When selecting a backsplash, it is important to have it match the fixtures in your kitchen, but not the appliances, since they will change over time. The fixtures however are more permanent items in the kitchen. The most popular materials for kitchen backsplashes are ceramic or porcelain tiles, natural stone tiles, glass or metal tiles, and faux painting or wall paper. Kitchen Backsplash Materials to Consider When you are creating a kitchen backsplash consider these materials: Ceramic or porcelain tiles Natural stone tiles Glass tiles Metal tiles Faux painting or durable wall paperStainless Steel Tile Backsplashes The nice thing about using tile as a backspash is that it comes is a huge variety of sizes, colors, textures and shapes. It is even possible to have custom painted tiles to match any theme of design. In addition a tile backsplash can be easy to install, as well as easy to clean. Many design experts say that you should consider keeping it simple by choosing the same tile for your kitchen backsplash as you’ve chosen for the floor – just in a smaller size. Natural Stone Tiles The most popular natural stone tiles are marble and granite. Of the natural stones marble captures more detail than granite and since it is a softer stone it is good for applications like kitchen backsplashes. Metal Tiles This material can work very well for use in country kitchen style backsplashes. The tiles can be installed as the entire surface from counter to the bottom of the cabinets. Brushed aluminum tiles are good for modern or 1950′s retro design kitchens. Metal tiles should match the color of the faucets and lighting. Glass Tiles A new design trend in kitchen backspashes is glass. Textured glass tiles are usually installed between the cabinets and counters. Glass is easy to clean and scratch resistant. These pieces really brighten up your kitchen environment and give it a clean, sleek look. But it can be interesting and warm too so, don’t limit yourself… stainless steel can be incorporated into almost any design theme.Backsplash Design
Used for decades in restaurants, stainless steel is undergoing a makeover as of late. You aren’t restricted to just smooth sheets anymore. Stainless steal backsplashes now come in a wide assortment of patterns and finishes and are an increasingly popular, stylish addition to today’s updated and upscale kitchens.
When considering a stainless steel backsplash, think about what kind of look or design theme you have in mind for your kitchen. Stainless steel is an extremely versatile material and no matter what you are looking to do, stainless steel offers some interesting possibilities.
If you enjoy using lots of different tools and gadgets in the kitchen, considering using stainless steel as the primary design material and going for a highly-polished, ultramodern look. For something cozier, try a matte finish. Or combine stainless steel tiles with other materials, such as glass or tumbled marble. You could even do just a portion of the backsplash with stainless… say around the cooktop.Cost
A stainless steel backsplash can be rather spendy, but it will vary depending on size and complexity. Tiles, for instance, can run from 40 to 200 dollars per square foot. Yikes! That’s more than many stone and glass tiles or other backsplash materials.
Sheets are less expensive, but will require expert installation. Expect to pay at least 20 dollars per square foot to fabricate and install stainless steel sheets.Backsplash Care and Cleaning
Caring for a stainless steel backsplash is a breeze! For day-to-day cleaning, warm water and soap on a soft cloth will take care of this highly hygienic surface; for a spotless finish, remember to wipe dry. Also, new sprays can keep fingerprints under control.
Do remember that the acids that come from tomato or citric acid can cause stains, as can bleaches and chlorides. Stains typically only occur in extreme cases when the substance has been left for days. Normal cleaning and a thorough rinse will take care of this. For further protection, consider applying a sealer.Installation
The most common look for a stainless steel backsplash is a sheet of stainless steel that has been custom-fit to your kitchen. This is a fairly straightforward installation. When going with this look, all that needs to be done is to take measurements of area for a sheet of steel to be cut to size. After this sheet has been prepared, it is “glued” to the wall with silicone caulking or screwed in with stainless steel screws.
Tiles require less expertise, but are similarly installed to a backing attached to the wall. Pros and Cons
While your stainless steel backsplash will be durable, heat resistant and easy to clean, do keep in mind that it will scratch and dent easier than a backsplash made out of ceramic, granite or marble. Patterned stainless steel backsplash tiles are excellent for hiding blemishes that occur through normal use. Happily, though, it does not require polishing, so unlike copper, zinc or brass, it will not discolor over time.Design Alternatives
Other currently popular ideas you may consider for your design is the use of a copper or tin backsplash. Do find out how they will perform in a kitchen environment, though, so you aren’t surprised if you copper discolors! For a truly unique look, why not consider mixing stainless steel tile with another metal?
Whether you’re looking to redo your kitchen or you’re designing your kitchen as part of your new home construction, consider installing a stainless steel backsplash for stylish durability!
If you want to redesign your kitchen then you basically have two options. You can hire a company to do everything for you or you can do it yourself. Hiring a company will cost you some serious money. The materials will only be a small part of the overall cost. Depending on how many people they’ll have working on your kitchen you can expect to pay several thousand dollars even if it’s just for new kitchen lighting, new sink or and new kitchen floor. You can however save a lot by doing it yourself. And if you are interested in this approach then you need to have a plan. The plan you devise should have several parts to it. The parts of the plan should concentrate on kitchen cabinets, kitchen lighting, kitchen floor and kitchen counters. These will be the basics because you can add additional plans for a kitchen island and even a kitchen backsplash.
Now that you know what parts of the kitchen you want to redesign you have to collect information that will help you accomplish the feat of kitchen redesign. There are many resources both online and even in bookstores. The best approach is to probably start reading online and joining DIY communities. You can get many great ideas and most people in such communities are very helpful. Familiarizing yourself with DIY lingo is also important. You need to know what the parts, materials and tools are called. This will be helpful because it will make matters easy when you have a question. Your next step is to select a certain design for one part of your plan. So if you are starting with the floor you need to decide on what kind of style is right for you. Perhaps you want tiles or maybe you want wooden floors. Once you’re decided you can then decide on the type of material that you want. Perhaps ceramic tiles if you want tile floors and perhaps oak wood for your floors if you want wood flooring. Knowing such information will narrow your research. Specific research is much better than general research. This way if you do want wooden floors you can go ahead and research wood floors instead of kitchen floors in general.
You know what you want now and it’s time to estimate how much the materials will cost. This will take a lot of time to research and you can begin online but also check out stores like home depot. Your last step after knowing how much everything will cost is to do the actual research that will help you install your new floor or new kitchen cabinets. Online DIY guides that include pictures and videos are much more helpful than an all text help guide. This is my experience anyway. It helps many people when they are able to see a visualization of the steps necessary to build or install something. It’s also great to be able to pay and playback a video. Finally you need to think of a way to keep everything organized. Knowing exactly where the tools and materials are is helpful. You also don’t want your family getting hurt by tripping on materials on the floor. This means you must involve your family in the plan. They will be inconvenienced for some duration if for example you are installing a new kitchen floor. You would probably have to devise a plan in this regard like how will food be prepared when the kitchen is being worked on. The inconvenience will hopefully be limited and worth it when you and your and your family enter your beautiful completed new kitchen.
