Hello! I’m here to give more proof of the fact that tfp is all in Sherlock or John’s mind. First of all you need to know that usually a person dreams about people they have seen or that they know, because it’s difficult for our brain to create new faces, so according to this, the scenes where baby Eurus is on the plane can only be in John or Sherlock’s (emp) mind.

The reason is simple: if everything that happened in tfp was real, we would see this girl on the plane (real baby Eurus):

the first girl would be the one we’d see if we were actually seeing Eurus’ imagination, while the second one is what Sherlock and John would imagine once they are told of a little girl and a plane full of dead/unconscious people, because they connected it to facts they knew or heard about, so they imagined that the girl who was talking about the “flight of the dead” could have the same face of another girl they heard talking about another “flight of the dead”

57 AS 007 One of the nicknames for the 57 (or 75) Spades pair in cards is 007, as a reference to James Bond’s winning hand in Casino Royale (2006).

In the The Day Of The Doctor: Cinema Intro, episode written by Moffat:

THE DOCTOR (11): I just watched the 100th anniversary special, all 57 doctors.

This means that the number might have some significance to him.

007 AND 57 IN A SCANDAL IN BELGRAVIA There’s a large number of significant parallels between A Scandal In Belgravia and Casino Royale (2006) (you can read about them here), among which the presence of a 57.

JOHN: 57? SHERLOCK: Sorry, what? JOHN: 57 of those texts, the ones I’ve heard. 

007 and Bond are also explicitly mentioned:

MYCROFT: Bond Air is go, that’s decided.

MYCROFT (flashback): Bond Air is go. Bond Air is go. Bond Air is go. Bond Air is go. Bond Air is go.

JOHN: Uh, flight 007. SHERLOCK: What did you say? JOHN: You’re right. SHERLOCK: No, no, no, after that. What did you say after that? JOHN: 007. Flight 007. SHERLOCK: 007, 007, 007, 007… SHERLOCK: something, something connected to 007… What? 007, 007, what, what, something, what?

Since 57 is a number that Moffat uses in many other occasions and episodes, the general significance of 57 could not be a reference to 007, which is not relevant elsewhere. Still the other 57s in Moffat’s work could be coincidental or, since Moffat could choose where to place his 57s, he might have consciously decided to place one in the same episode with all the references to Casino Royale.

Another hint in this direction could be the fact that the number which mirrors 007, 700, appears:

Next to the word “Suit”;

With a blackish background.

…as the “suit of Spades” is a specific element of the 57 = 007 pairing and as the suit of Spades is a black suit.

To add to the connections with the suit of Spades in Sherlock, during A Scandal In Belgravia, John Watson and Irene Adler seem to have been subtextually associated respectively with the Jack and the Queen of Spades, as you can read here.

A STRAIGHT FLUSH AND 207 AS 007 In another Moffat’s episode, His Last Vow, this reference might have been continued.

SHERLOCK : Mmm. I won it in a card game with the Clarence House Cannibal. Nearly cost me my kidneys, but fortunately I had a straight flush. Quite a gambler, that woman.

We have:

1) Sherlock playing a card game.

2) A straight flush, which is a hand that contains five cards in sequence, all of the same suit.  So:

Still a Bond reference for the same 57 scene:

MAN: Monsieur Bond. 5 and 7 of spades. A straight flush.

Innuendo to the fact that A Scandal In Belgravia plays between the possibility of straight attraction between Sherlock and The Woman (which are actually both gay).

3) A mention of a “woman”, while Irene Adler is professionally known as The Woman and quite gambles with her life in A Scandal In Belgravia to play a game.

SHERLOCK: You got carried away. The game was too elaborate. You were enjoying yourself too much. IRENE: No such thing as too much. SHERLOCK: Oh, enjoying the thrill of the chase is fine, craving the distraction of the game, I sympathise entirely, but sentiment? Sentiment is a chemical defect found in the losing side.

Later in the same scene Mary mentions a 207 in Sherlock’s memories of the wedding:

MARY: Two oh seven.  

Two oh, could also be interpreted as double oh: Two oh = 00 Which would result in: Two oh seven = 007

This could be a reference (and a clue when this line is first presented during the wedding) to Mary being an intelligence agent, like a 007, as her very skills betray:

SHERLOCK: By your skill set, you are – or were – an intelligence agent. 

This wordplay might already have been used by Gatiss in The Great Game:

MYCROFT: Uh, twenty-seven; a clerk at Vauxhall Cross – er, MI6.

27, pronounced like 20-7 could be similarly be interpreted like “double oh”-7. This is reinforced by the referred person is an intelligence agent working at M16, like James Bond. The age of the clerk comes from ACD canon, but in the short-story he was a junior clerk at the Royal Arsenal and not an intelligence agent.

Another one of Sherlock’s memories in that scene is also related to another possible reference to Casino Royale (from both The Empty Hearse and The Sign of Three), paralleling Bond trying to deduce a fellow intelligence agent.

BOND: Now, I’d have normally gone with only child, but, you see, by the way you ignored the quip about your parents, l’m gonna have to go with orphan.

MARY: Ah, orphan’s lot. Friends, that’s all I have.

Number 57 in BBC Sherlock

I felt the need to collect everything I know about the importance that this number has in BBC Sherlock and TJLC. Absolutely nothing is mine, I’m purely putting together all the posts I’ve found about it.

First of all, 57 is used some times in Doctor Who (which was also written by Moffat), especially in this scene:

This is from an episode about Shakespeare. The Doctor answers with this line when the poet says something that could hint at his bisexuality. (x)

Now, probably Shakespeare had a male lover to whom many of his sonnets (126) are dedicated. The sonnet that is best known for being about this man is sonnet 57, which is clearly about homosexual love, in particular it talks about unrequited love to a man Shakespeare fell in love with. (x)

We don’t know the name of the man Shakespeare addressed all these poems, but we know his initials: WH. (x)

Oh but Sherlock begins with S doesn’t it? Of course, just… his first name is not Sherlock.

It’s William. William Sherlock Scott Holmes. WH.

Remember Moffat has worked on Doctor Who? He hasn’t directly written the episode I mentioned before, but we all know Steven and Mark are both nerds fanboys - they’re exactly the kind of people who would use such a symbolism in their show (in fact they did it in other occasions too: they happen to be the ones who used number 1895, year of Sherlock Holmes’ most famous case, everywhere in their show). And:

Thrilling you’ve been counting.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, laid-back John Watson obsessively counted every single text message Irene sent to his flatmate. This is the same guy who can’t remember which one of his last girlfriends owns a dog only a couple of minutes later. (—> wise words from this post).

Incidentally, that one sonnet which tends to make people think Shakespeare was gay is number fifty-seven. Coincidence? Oh Sherlock, what do we say about coincidence?

I had a fever dream the other day which ended up being a horrific amalgamation of Sherlock (specifically Moriarty), the Grinch, Doctor Who (specifically the TARDIS), weird rat people, and various horror tropes, yet it actually made more sense than S4. It just confirmed to me that S4 is a massive pile of horse shit.
