I want everyone to know that there are queers in the hollers of Appalachia, in the bayous and marshland of the Deep South, in Southwestern deserts, through the Ozark mountains and up to the Rockies. There are queers in the Great Plains, there are queers in rural America, in trailer parks of the Osage foothills. In the places you least expect us to live, we are here, carving out community and fighting for liberation with pride despite it all. Stop forgetting about us. Stop overlooking our experiences and our impact just because we don’t live in a Big Gay City. And for the love of God, stop looking at us with pity.

You aren’t always going to need that band you found at 13, 14, 15, whatever. Yes, they were there for you when a lot of people weren’t. Their lyrics filled some aching void inside you that nothing else could. They understood you. And that is a beautiful thing

Trust me, I know what it feels like to be curled up in bed, headphones in, music so loud you can’t hear anything else, feel anything else, think anything

But… the music is just a tool. It can’t fix you. Yes, it can make you feel understood, like maybe it’s the only thing holding you together sometimes. But… only God can bring healing that lasts

That band won’t always hit as hard as they used to. You’re going to grow, you’re going to heal, you’re going to move on from that broken teenage self someday. And one day, you’ll realize you don’t need the music to hold you together anymore

But that’s okay.

That’s a good thing. A beautiful thing. A melancholy thing. Just like life itself is. You’ll always have those memories, that band will always hold a special place in your heart, a testament to how you’ve grown

The thing is that like “edgy humour” really is a GIANT red flag among young white men……you hear white boys making racist jokes all the time but people tend to brush it off and assume they’ll grow out of it or that they’re just going through a harmless edgy humour phase and like…..some of them might grow out of it but that’s not the POINT! They’re racist NOW! They’re spreading islamophobic ideas NOW and we brush it off because we assume they’ll grow out of it in the future but whether they do or not is irrelevant; they need to grow out of it Right. Now. Or more lives will be lost.

Great get online and go to a job board. Indeed, Linkedin whatever. Now you're gonna search for a role that's in your city, fits your qualifications, and doesn't seem like a bad time.

See that easy apply button? Don't hit it they just throw those in the trash. Now you're gonna want to go to the company's website and check their careers page.

Oh? That job doesn't exist anymore. Cool go back to the job board and find another one.

Great you found another job, you're on the company's career page and the job exists!! So you're going to need to make an account on the career page website. They're using Workday, the same site as the last job you applied for? Who cares? You need to make another account for THIS job's workday page.

Now you're going to upload your resume. That'll autopopulate about 15 boxes with everything on your resume, except formatted wrong and with tons of errors. So just go through and painstakingly check the dates on all of that and rewrite everything you already laid out in an aesthetically pleasing format on your resume.

Ok time for the cover letter, explain why this specific job and company are deeply important to you. You love their mission statement and wouldn't even laugh if their ceo was gunned down in the street. You'll really want to reiterate the things you just spent the last 20 minutes filling out on the resume section

(Remember to include language from the job description, people who work in HR are lower than dogs and they need patterns or they get confused.) Write about a page, but hey don't sound too desperate or robotic this is where they judge your character!

Maybe add your portfolio site at the end here, who knows if that helps no one has ever clicked mine haha.

Usually I kinda give a dissection of the entire fic, but i have a million things to say, so we're gonna start with just one fun fact and one scene:

The Studio Photoshoot:

Originally, their first photoshoot together -- the one with the flowers in the studio -- was going to end in a completely different tone; I wanted some sort of inadvertent confession.

The final version of the scene goes as follows:

“You think I’m beautiful then, Osc?”  Oscar freezes, camera still held up to his eye. Lando’s gaze is sharp but his smile is small, no more than a quirk of the lips; it’s a more serious expression than Oscar’s seen, like his question is earnest. Like there’s more beneath it.  “I –” He starts, lowering the camera to his chest. In a moment of silence, they look at each other, eye to eye. “Fuck off.”  Lando brings his cup to his lips again, not breaking eye contact. “How’s the lighting?” “Getting there.”

But when I first typed it out, there was a slight difference in Oscar's response.

Lando’s gaze is sharp but his smile is small, no more than a quirk of the lips; it’s a more serious expression than Oscar’s seen, like his question is earnest. Like there’s more beneath it.  “I –” He starts, lowering the camera to his chest. In a moment of silence, they look at each other, eye to eye. Quietly, no more than a whispered exhale, he answers: “Yes.” Lando brings his cup to his lips again, not breaking eye contact. “How’s the lighting?” “Getting there.”

I thought it had a lot of potential as a moment because like, Oscar wouldn't really be confessing, exactly, but rather talking about his art. Obviously he thinks Lando is beautiful, or at the very least compelling, if he was willingly to ask him to model for his entire term portfolio. It still would have set him on edge, having to admit something like that out loud, and I think Actual Menace Lando would have enjoyed tormenting him.

It also had the added appeal of like, playing into the conflict at the end: Lando's convinced that Oscar only likes the concept of him, not the actual complicated person underneath. If Oscar had agreed here, it probably would have made that even WORSE.

The reason I didn't keep it is because I didn't want Oscar to start contemplating his feelings yet. I wanted him to continue being an idiot, and I wanted him to be able to pretend that he doesn't feel that way about Lando. Yet.

Soundtrack:

I wrote this entire fic to two songs, which I played for over 1,000 minutes each :) very sane :) I liked the sort of soft wistfulness that both of these have when you zone out to them, it felt very fitting.
