The story of the Boloki Cloud people [Central African mythology; Boloki mythology]
Many cultures around the world have a story to explain the origin of fire. In the native lore of the Boloki people – who live in the Central African Republic – this story starts with a man named Motu.
Note that according to Weeks, ‘Motu’ simply means ‘person’ in the Boloki language, so I am uncertain whether this is supposed to an actual name here, or merely a mistranslation of a nameless protagonist.
Anyway, Motu had a garden, in which he planted bananas and plantain. Motu took great care of his crops, so he was very displeased to find that someone had been stealing his fruit: a thief had cut off bunches of plantain and bananas and had carried them away without leaving a trace.
He soon found that this was not an isolated incident: his crops disappeared again and again, until one day he had enough and decided to hide himself near the garden, so he could ambush the thief. Not much time had passed before the perpetrators showed up again, but these were no ordinary thieves. A group of strange beings descended from the heavens and started eating away at his bananas. The ones they couldn’t eat were cut off and collected. When they left, Motu chased after them and he managed to capture one of the strange creatures, a woman whom he took back to his house.
The thieves were members of the Cloud people, or Cloud-folk, a mysterious species from Cloudland. I did not find any physical description of these beings nor their homeland, except that they had tails. Curiously, they are neither humans nor spirits, instead they are treated as something else entirely. They possess supernatural power. Motu soon fell in love with the woman he had kidnapped. He gave her a name, which translates to ‘Favourite’, and married her.
Favourite was a very intelligent woman and blended in well with the people of the Earth. But she learned that the humans did not know about fire, nor did they understand that meat should be cooked before eating. So she asked her fellow Cloud people to bestow the gift of fire onto humanity.
Now, humans could cook food and warm themselves during cold or rainy days. Motu was a happy man, as the people now regarded him with respect and appreciation and he lived a happy life with Favourite. Soon, his wife persuaded more Cloud people to settle in the village, and one day they gave her a basket. Favourite told her husband that he should never, ever open this basked, for if he did all the Cloud people would leave the Earth forever and return to Cloudland.
Motu agreed, and the basket was put on a shelf in their home. Time passed, and Motu’s curiosity kept on growing until he couldn’t take it anymore. One day, he waited until his wife left for work – for she helped out on the farm – and took a quick peak in the basket. To his surprise, it was empty, and he quickly put it back as if nothing had happened. But when Favourite returned later that day, she asked her surprised husband why he had opened the forbidden basket.
True to their word, Favourite and all the other Cloud people returned to the heavens, never to be seen again. To this day, not a single member of their species has been seen on Earth again. The people were blessed with fire: they could now warm themselves and cook food. But Motu had lost his wife as well as his status in the village, as punishment for his curiosity.
Cloudland and the Cloud people were also mentioned in another story! In the tale of Nkengo, the protagonist beckons loudly to the sky to lower a rope so he could climb up to Cloudland. The Cloud people agreed and pulled Nkengo up. After ascending for a day, he arrived in the sky and asked the Cloud people for eternal life, which they agreed to bestow upon humanity if he managed to stay awake for 7 consecutive days. He tried, but dozed off on the 7th day, and was banished from Cloudland. And that is why humans still age and die.
