I work full time at a trauma center. Sometimes I have to be on call, in case of emergency. I like being a nurse and taking care of people; I like helping put them back together and fixing their broken things. I like working in surgery. But I don’t like being on call. Over the course of two days, I worked 34 hours. Sure, I get paid. Still, it kinda sucks getting called out of bed in the middle of the night to mend the bullet-riddled guts of some hopelessly addicted ner do well, to get verbally abused, to watch donated blood save the life of someone who has quite possibly given up on their own. But that’s what we do. We help people. Portland, like other cities, is going through some hard times. Drugs, violence, homelessness. Business, industry, education. But I live here because I like it. And while it’s easy to get down on Portland and even Oregon, to focus on the negatives and whinge about the current state of things, I’m mostly optimistic. The good always outweighs the bad. There are efforts being made by our elected officials; households are being taxed at the highest marginal rate in the nation to help them. There are plans, goals and actions. There is also red tape, bureaucracy and inaction. So it goes. Anyway, I needed some peace after working and being ‘on’ for so many hours in such a short stretch. So Tomato and I went to the beach, crushed some claws and fell asleep to the sound of crashing waves.

Which of these dudes is really living life? The itchy guy? The potato man? Or the guy playing with butterflies?
