A year ago my wife told my parents that I had disappeared to go "find myself" and planned on never returning. My parents were surprised and deeply saddened. But like good In-laws they made sure that all my many assets were now in her name only.

What they didn't know is that was that my wife and I divorced and I become her live-in maid. The mansion was now hers alone and I was not allowed upstairs unless performing my duties. My small 10 x 10 maid quarters in the basement was all that I could call mine.

A year later she invited my parents to spend a week with her so they could see how well her life was going. She now was the CEO of my former business. She traveled the world. She was engaged to an incredibly handsome attorney.

For a week I waited on my parents as if they were my employer's guest and not close relatives. I enjoyed no longer being their child but a maid to make their stay more enjoyable. My mother was initially shocked but then seemed to admire my former wife even more stating admiration at her fully embracing her elevated status while lowering mine. In that profound moment of reveal I no longer was a son or husband. I proudly acknowledged that I was now just a maid.
