love the symbolism of haymitch's outfit in the parade scene. he loses his "cheesy imitation coal miner hat in the accident and, rid of the headgear, our outfits become merely neutral, black and forgettable." (SOTR, 79).

he's wearing the uniform of his district, a coal miner, someone sent to the deepest parts of the earth day after day, working for scrip, not even real money, facing the highest, "most brutal" person in panem with a dead girl in his arms forcing him to confront that he did this.

how he's not haymitch- rather he's every coal miner in district 12, every person who has lost a child to the games, to starvation, to the oppression of snow's regime. he is not haymitch. he is panem.

the way haymitch must have seen it as all his ghosts coming back to haunt him at once when katniss walked onto the train with the face of burdock and asterid, the pin of maysilee, the voice of lenore dove, and a background so devastatingly similar to his own. of course sweetheart slipped out. and of course he did everything he could to keep her alive

giggling at the thought of snow watching katniss and peeta win the games under haymitch’s mentorship with lucy gray’s songs as their own personal soundtrack. every mockingjay that he could never control on one unhinged team, openly defying his rules and winning the public’s adoration in the process. absolutely insane.

people saying that peeta was not the same level of victor as the others is so funny. especially when they are like, "well, he didn't technically kill anyone." like that is some sort of prerequisite.

because didn't we just learn that wiress didn't directly kill anyone in her arena?? is she not a victor now?

im gonna be so fr and this might be a hot take but i dont think we’re gonna get so much background on katniss’ parents in sotr as ive seen ppl posting ab.

like mrs everdeen is the same age as maysilee, and most likely has no ties to the seam yet (or at the very least is keeping it a secret and is most likely unmarried still). also, haymitch is is katniss’ parallel. katniss usually doesn’t bother namedropping random ppl in the district unless she directly interacts with them multiple times, and i doubt haymitch will be any different.

additionally — it’s his book. his story. him and lenore dove and sid and maysilee and whoever else is directly involved in his life, which probably doesn’t include the everdeens considering he has no known closeness to them prior to katniss’ games.

not trying to be a debbie downer or anything, but they aren’t the main characters, and i do genuinely believe that including a bunch of extra information about them would distract from haymitch’s story. i’d be surprised if we even get their names atp😅
