Likening writing to a backflip does not seem helpful. The latter is completed in one swift motion, though it must be said that a total degree of conviction and confidence is required. I’ve been told backflips don’t have much to do with particular skill or technique, though I’m sure that a hierarchy exists in this field and that some flips are gnarlier than others. More important, as told by a member of B-boy crew Azanian Flames whose name I have forgotten over the years (too many headspins and not enough backflips maybe), is to jump with every intention of landing after the abaft air-bound twist is completed. I cannot say how important landing is to writing because I don’t know. Jokes, ideally, land. But writing can float, sink, shatter…there are rules, but they need not be adhered to, at least when writing for writings sake. This being no draft of a constitution, or even an artistic declaration at this point, can turn as it pleases like an imagined wildstyle buffed in coding, never landing anywhere or on anything. However, my hunch for now is that to make something lasting, the words need an intention, a destination to ultimately arrive at.
