Oh... One final thing before I go,
Mastery: Personal Development and Leadership
It has been exactly one year since I started my Mastery Journey at Full Sail. First up was
Was the Mastery: Personal Development and Leadership. My most memorable lesson from this class was the turning point video. That is exactly what this journey was for me. A turning point. Before wrote this, I actually watched the video again to see where I came from. It gave me chills seeing how far I came and just a year and have accomplished some of the things I talked about in that video. I stayed in my lane and occupied a niche. Like Einstein it’s not about making the needle move north to south, it’s about the force behind. In other words, there is a deeper connection then what you see on top.
The book entitled Mastery, by Robert Green, is by far my favorite read from this class.
This was because this book took the suscesses and failures that happened through history and gave me insight behind the thought processes. This book along with the assignments served as a good starting point for gearing my mind to change for the better, but most importantly, changing my mind for the business. My first task after taking a little brain break is to re-read this book and further develop the master in me.

Plan the Business.
As this course comes to an end and I reflect upon my initial expectations for this course, it gives be a clearer picture of the mastery journey thus far and how it has changed the way I perceive business, but life in general. I originally had the expectations of developing a viable business plan. Also, to enhance business concepts and existing businesses. It was during this class that I realized I had already learned the concepts needed to create a viable business plan. This course was more like the glue that tide everything together. The goal of any business is to be successful. A successful business plan is the foundation of a successful business. Keeping the 4 C’s in mind, control, challenge, creativity and cash, I think one of the most important things to keep in my while building a plan is preparing for the long haul.
A good business plan should be spanned out and planned in two aspects. The first one is a written business plan detailing the ins and outs of your business along with any pertinent information that will be of interest for any investor. What do you do? How is it different from your competitors? Who is your target market, and do you understand their demographics? To put it as simply as possible do you understand the business and the situation of the industry that you are going into. Effective research is how you get to that understanding. Industry magazines, Nielsen is always a good source, expos, insight and analytic techniques are just a few of the ways you can find accurate information to make an intelligent assessment of what you are getting into. Build your target market, niche, and competitive advantage based of off this information. Make sure you relay this information for your potential investors in the written part of your plan in numbers via graphs, charts, etc. You can have the greatest conversation known to man with your investors, but visible numbers quantified by viable sources that back your brief, but powerful statements are a more effective way of gaining new business partners.
Now that you have a winning game plan for success because you took the Bill Belichick approach and really did your homework, it’s all about packaging. I use the word BRAND at least 10 times more a day when talking business because it is the best one worded definition for how, where and for how much you present your business. This is where you take that effective research and digest it into a strong executive summary, mission statement, product lines, branding and marketing strategies geared towards attracting that target market. A successful plan will encompass the branding style of the company. Operations is to be mapped out as well. Are you doing business as a corporation or an LLC? Are you running an online site or bricks and mortar? Maybe both. What are the legal liabilities accompanied with your industry? How many employees will you have? This is going to have an effect how much space and amenities you offer.
With a well written business plan dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s, how are you going to pay for it? A financial plan, or pro forma must be written out for at least three years based on real numbers from industry research, operations cost, marketing plan, sales strategies and all the other things that were written out in the business plan. The purpose of this to me to is to take a strong look at how long it is going to be before you actually start making money and much you are going to need for your startup cost. Even so with a great business plan and financial outlook, it is still a one more up for the company that has a contingency plan.

How has the availability and cost effectiveness of self-publishing affected the sound of Hip Hop and R&B?
The digital age has affected the music industry clearly with marketing, revenue, recruiting and product development. I would like to mention perhaps another area that is not so shined upon. Mostly because like the sound of the style of music in today’s society the topic is grimy, provocative, uncensored, profane and all the ugly little things that’s true about some aspects of today’s society that we like to sweep under the rug, it’s to vulgar to discuss, but it’s the answer, in my opinion, to what happened to Hip Hop, via the way of “Trap Music.”
There is no doubt that Gangster Rap told the story of gang rivals, drug usage, prostitution, robbing, murdering and the list goes on, as far back as NWA which was Dr. Dre, Easy E, Ice Cube and DJ Yella, Arabian Prince and MC Ren back in 1986. However, there was a since of realness to, such as NWA’s Fuck the Police,” as it was inspired by not police harassing the group during a recording session as portrayed in the 2015 Bio pic, but the group actually rode around the city shooting paint ball guns at other cars and were pulled over and treated roughly (Genius 2017). Even though the song wasn’t recorded with the attention of what it ended up standing for in a revolutionary sense, I think because the thought was pure, no matter what, they really were like,” Fuck the Police, then the energy was true to itself, and could be understood, felt, and rechanneled with the purpose it ended up having and that was a bold response to police brutality.
As Gangster Rap progressed in the 90s however, and Gangster Rappers started flourishing like movie stars, in my opinion, the drug dealers started to keen in on the lucrative benefits of selling their life style via phonorecord, from there, the sound started to change slightly. Early Dope boys turned rappers were Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, Wu Tang Clan and Jay-Z. The only difference between some of them that is important for this blog is that Biggie was signed to Bad Boy record label. Snoop Dogg and Wu Tang Clan were also signed to labels. Jay-Z however, took the entrepreneur route and started his own record label with business partners and has been a prolific icon in not just the music industry but the business industry as a whole. This latter form, the Jay-Z type, along with some southern rappers like Master P and UGK had a whole new have street rap that glorified hustling, drug selling and the baller lifestyle as well as turn a different kind of light through street wisdom warning the younger generation about the ugly side of the dope game and baller lifestyle. The most important thing to mention however, this is when artist started taking their own publishing and distribution by the reins as all of the latter I mentioned started their own label eventually if not from the start, and signed themselves, owning the rights to their own publishing and only seeking distribution deals.
This shift made by dope boy artist, especially Jay-Z and Master P, would lead a strong era of entrepreneur dope boys to last up until and past the 2000’s such as T.I., Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy and many more (hiphopwire, 2018).
Now the history lesson I gave is very bland and missing some names probably and a more detailed timeline of Gangster Rap, to Dope boy artist, to the newer transition of trap music. The point is that the sound and topics change along with the rise in self-publishing and distribution. So, at this point I would like to say that if any rapper, talented or not, wanted to make it in the music industry, they would mimic the lifestyle and sound of those already there. It is a common known fact that it is hard to find good unique talent. To put it all together, around the 2000s is when you had a large quantity of indie rap labels centered around the drug dealing lifestyle, usually ran by drug lord or higher up. I believe this is because a drug dealer or mafia/mob member could come up with more funds to invest in music. This creates a group of rappers who are not challenged to become better artist, because their purpose lies in the fast money life style that the music industry can bring that is closely related to the life of someone who deals in organized crime/gang activity. According to Craft, PRO’s divide the royalty up 50/50 between the publisher and the songwriter. If the publisher is thus said king pin, a leader of the lifestyle, the songwriter, said artist that lives the lifestyle, or needs to make people believe they do to sale albums, they are no checks and balances. Rap has now condemned to fit this certain premade template to be considered a true artist. Your CEO has to be this Mob/Mafia/Drug Lord type persona with the artist being a up and coming, or well-respected street savvy “trapper” or drug lord. Recently two artist I mentioned, T.I. and Gucci Mane, started quarreling over the coining of the name “Trap Music,” (Serato, 2018). Even though the slowed done beats and faster hi hats can go to producer Shawty Redd, the lifestyle goes to T.I. and Gucci Mane. Especially Gucci Mane who introduced popping pills heavily in his music. The shifted a change in drug choice by fans and artist. Xanax, Percocet and other prescription drugs became the choice of drugs mixed with a slower “trap” beat with a rapper who is also slowed down by the use of these drugs to a “mumble rap.” Now we have a generation of up and comers who have the technology like CD baby and Tune Core to push themselves, a premade format they feel they must meet which includes making the same music, glorifying the same things and taking the same drugs with once again the most important factors missing out the equation. A love for music, and motivation to become better artist. All might not be lost however; some rappers have pledged to live Xanax alone. Maybe this might be the turn we need to shift the sound of Rap.

Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution
My personal goal for this course was to learn how to publish and distribute, especially online, media content in a proficient and professional manner. I met this goal through the reading and course work centered around the book for this course, Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution the 4th Edition by Kimberly Craft, M.M. J.D. Some of the most important information I learned was the pitching process discussed on the basic forms of media like Music, Video Games, Theatrical/Motion Pictures, TV Shows and Books. Every form has its different method of being proposed and it was broken down and discussed quite well. Even though music is my chosen form of media, if I so happen to choose to write original treatment, presentation treatment, teaser pitch, story pitch, and or hook or log line for film, I know what they are and can do so besides some solid resources to find potential investors and publishers to pitch it to. I would say the biggest effect this class had on my mastery journey was my perception of being an indie artist and distributing your content as it also reemphasized the use of PROs and the 4 basic different types of licenses which are Mechanical, Compulsory, Performing rights and Synchronization. I never took the time actually look at CD baby or Tune Core before this class sad to say. I have been looking at the power of owning my on publishing and the use of aggregators all wrong. If you have the knowledge to use these powerful tools of technology we have at our hands to market and protect yourself, the possibilities are endless.

Advance Entertainment Law
This month in Advance Entertainment Law, I gained key knowledge on the administrative side of the Industry that will help protect and effectively manage, with limited risk, my company, music and future endeavors. This class has not only changed my perspective on laws and policies ,but has also effected the way I speak and write when engaging in business matters. After reading a healthy number of court cases. I began to get a better understanding of law, and the plain language it is meant to be understood and administered by. The key concepts that stuck with me the most out of this class was PRO or Performance Rights Organization information, the Copyright act of 1976, the Fair Use act of 1976, Copyright infringement, Trademarks, the evolution of Laws as they pertain to the internet and reading contract agreements. I even picked up on how songs before 1972 are held to their state laws on copyright and how radio stations, whether AM/FM or Internet are usually protected against having to pay royalties for the use of the material. I learned this as I was looking through cases to use for my final research paper.
When it comes to dealing with a PRO, the are several organizations out there like BMI and ASCAP that you can publish your musical composition or lyrics with as a composer, writer or producer. They will collect your royalties for you and monitor who plays your recordings. The legal aspects I learned in this class is that legally the moment you create your work into a tangible form according to the Copyright Act of 1976, it is copyrighted and owned by you. However, the benefit of obtaining a PRO membership besides the monitoring of who plays your work is that if you do have to take someone to court for copyright infringement, when or if you signed up with a PRO is a major factor. One reason why is because if you so happen to win the case and your signed with a PRO, you are entitled to all of your lawyer and court fees, if you are not, you are stuck with them.
Another instance is like in the case Jimmy Smith Estates versus Drake. Jimmy Smith Estates and Hebrew Hustle tried to stick Drake with copyright infringement for sampling an acapella called Jimmy Smith Rap. One of the deciding factors in Drakes favor was that the Estates nor Hebrew Hustle copyrighted the song when it first came out, you have about 5 months after the creation of a song for a copyright to really hold weight in a court case, instead they waited 31 years later after Drake had sampled the song. This weighed heavily against the Plaintiff in court. Dr. Seuss did not only teach me how to rhyme and that a change of heart is the most powerful thing humans can muster strength from (How the Grinch Stole Christmas), but I was taught through two of Seuss Enterprises cases what constitutes as copyright infringement and what is protected under the fair use act. A book called Oh the spaces we’ll go!!! , was found to be infringing because it was a book that was similar to Dr. Seuss’s Oh the places we’ll go!!! , with similar title text that is similar to Seuss’s. This is because it can be distributed in the same market as Seuss’s children book. However, a play based on the character Cindy Lou at age 45 was found to be a fair use because the it was a parody not intended for the same market as Seuss’s children’s books.
In conclusion to put it simply, as I progress in the Industry, in all my endeavors I will stop and ask myself these questions. 1) Who is the intended market and or audience? 2) Who owns the rights? 3) What does the contract? 4) If a dispute arises, who is going to settle it? And most importantly 5) Is my business, trademarks, ideas and talent copyrighted?

Product and Artist Management
Product and Artist management has been probably what is one of the most important classes for me that I will take in this program. For the first two weeks I gained knowledge and practical experience through classwork on how to appropriately deal with different kinds of talent and how to lead through the different character styles. I was able to choose different scenarios and apply knowledge from not only this class, but previous classes in a way that turned dealing with people into a practical science that can be used flawlessly. The aspect that I appreciate the most was how triangulating data and cross-referencing data finally kicked in and made sense. I was able to use factual information like Bruno Mars tour, statistics on his fans to see what they like, come up with a product based on that research, find the best venue to launch that project based on more research about the venue and event themselves and create a win win service that can actually be used in a real-world scenario. When it came to digital marketing and the state of the music industry, the easiness to buy likes and followers which leads to a lack of authenicity amongst emerging artist, and I started this month off with a brash opinion, I believe I even stated it in the first couple of discussions for this month. The Midem 2015 video with Ryan Leslie really changed my mood and perspective on the industry again. I think I really ranted in my 2nd week discussion board and that video really changed thinking. You can really have a good target market in the music industry without selling yourself short and keeping most of your profit. It really gave me a sigh of relief to hear the head of music at Nilsen and twitter say that they do watch in pay attention to things like artist having a 100k+ followers but 10 likes. After this course I now know that the “wild wild west” of the digital world is almost over as data watching becomes heavier, the necessity actually having more talent than followers will soon emerge again.

Negotiation and Deal-Making
When at the beginning of this class, I had little experience and knowledge about negotiation and deal-making. Quite honestly, I ended up on the wrong end of the stick or with my needs not met. So, the first thing I wanted to learn was how to better handle negotiations and some tactics to help. I have gotten an opportunity to do so as one of our assignments, and my expectations, was to conduct a negotiation with one of my classmates. The course material, The Leader’s Guide to Negotiation, was a very insightful reading. I showed things not only in my professional life but in my personal life as well. This course really has been a life changing experience for me. It made me ask myself this question that applied to so many facets of my life. What am I getting out of the deal? Once again this is not just a question for my professional life. I truly feel like a met my goal in this class plus more.
My mind has been altered to negotiate fair, honest and hard, but most importantly, to speak up for myself, needs and wants. I walked into a panel interview this last week of class for a job. It was like being neo in the matrix. My eyes, intuition and confidence are on another level. I’ve never felt that type of confidence and power before. There is truly power in knowledge. Now when I talk, I skip right pass bargaining positions and move straight to underlying interest. To me this is called being straight forward. When I’m dealing with someone who is bullheaded or a commander, I will bring in a mediator. I know I am a quiet supporter, I can analyze now how to interact with the other styles. Most importantly, when it comes to the entertainment industry, I will be putting an arbitration and mediation clause in everything. Mediate first, and if that doesn’t work, let’s head to the arbitrator.

In with the brand , out with the brand...
The original goal I had in mind for the course I’m taking this semester, Digital Marketing, was to learn how to market myself, business, or any company I should work for, effectively and professionally. Going back to professor DeGillio’s class, Business Storytelling and Brand Development, I learned first what I was supposed to have been marketing in the first place, the brand. Your brand to make it short is the how people feel about your company and its expectation for your product or services. How you choose to market that brand through a logo, colors, type kit, trademark, slogan etc., should be dependent upon the way you want people to interpret your brand. If a customer is meeting you for the first time, don’t you want to determine how that person feels about you as effective as possible? Now that I have a more specific understanding of what a brand is, and my brand for that matter, it is important to integrate this brand to the people on all sides, your customers, employees and corporate heads alike.
Digital Marketing being on the rise, I felt it was important to enhance this class, and my new-found knowledge of branding, with Brand and Marketing Integration, a www.lynda.com educational video by Diana Shapiro. What I took from this video is this brand integration involves four basic types of integration, Vertical, Horizontal, External and Internal. Vertical integration involves aligning your mission, values and purpose together to match your brand. Your brand identity should be visible across each of these statements creating a company “backbone” to stand on. Horizontal integration is aligning your company’s marketing capabilities, structure and strategy with your brand. Everything must fit, if you are going to have a brand centered around top of the line club venue, then your bottle service, bartenders, and DJ must look, talk and walk top of the line to match the brand, and your building must surely look top of the line as well.
External integration is meeting the customer at focused touchpoints to drive home the authenticity of your brand. From your website online, to the mobile app, to in real life interaction through customer reps, the customer must be met at every point interactions that enhances the brand in their mind. Last but the one that I think is the most important is Internal integration. I think this is most important because it touches the other three types of integration. Your employees, corporate heads and other human resource assets of a company, ARE THE BRAND. How you engage your employees, treat them, and most importantly the message you send to them is inevitably the message you send to your customer. It kind of relates to the Golden Rule, do unto others as you will have them do unto you. Well if you do for your employees what you would like for them to do for your customers, then the results of your brand are 100 times more effective. If you brand is to provide the best technical customer service to your customer, then you must train your employees to meet those needs. Spend time training your employees and they in turn will train your customers.
I thoroughly enjoyed the video by Diana Shapiro and recommend for anyone who is trying to integrate their brand into the minds of the customers, employees and world.

Entertainment Business Finance.
This class has been what I what like to call, “the eye opener” of what it really takes to construct a successful business. It wasn't merely the left brain functions of using logic and mathematics to create something tangible to forecast your business capital, it was also one of those courses that proves how serious you are about your business, and being successful at it. You really have to use that “Grit” that Angela Lee Duckworth refers to in her video,”Grit: the power of passion and perseverance.”(2013) Entertainment Business Finance really organized my thoughts and literally put structure to my business plan.
The longevity , success and pretty much everything about your business, depends on the financial stability of it, i.e. how much capital are you bringing in. One of the most important things this class showed me was that its more than just about the amount of capital your business is generating, its really about your net profit at the end of the day. In order to get to your net profit , you first have to take a look at your total expenses , including salaries and wages, interest on loans, how much goes to the investors and other expenses that are paid out of gross sales. A business canvas model, such as the one offered on www.bmfiddle.com, is a great way to list the value proposition, key activities and resources, cost structure, and revenue streams to help you figure out what cost and forms of profit should go into your pro forma for your business. A Pro Forma statement is a financial break done, using real numbers based on research and statistics, that project the financial earnings of your business for a a certain amount of time. The pro forma I did for this course gave me a true sense of how my business could be doing, and should that its really not that far off from being possible. A pro forma is a tool that could be used to lure potential investors towards your business. Along with taking a look at startup capital, other vital skills I learned over this course was using present and future time value of money, and understanding of how interest rates work on both sides, the loaner and the loanee , and how it relates to the interest we receive when we invest money in banks and other forms of financial capital.

BRANDED
Who are you? What do you do? What attracts me to you instead of our competitor? What does it matter? I need these answers quickly in a matter of seconds before the next man sways my decision. How will you get this accomplished? These are questions I have explored about myself, my product and services, and my company. In a society clogged with wanna be instant social media celebrities and all it takes is no talent, a hot beat, auto tunes, and 100k following to be considered a good Artist, the more important question is how do you stand out if you have the talent with limited resources and no following?
The five-letter word that makes all the difference is BRAND. How does your logo, trademark, previous service and company Archaetype speak for you? I have learned different aspects of the word Brand and how it applies to building a successful value proposition. According to Neumeier, A brand is a person’s gut feeling about a product, service, or company
(The Brand Gap, 2006). So, my brand is not what I think about my company or myself, but the image and feelings that the customer feels about me. From here we can digest the principles and sciences behind creating a strong brand.
A business model canvas is a great way to map out your business plan in order to get an overall prospective of what you do, how you do it, and how you deliver it to the customers. They are nine elements to a business model canvas, Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partnerships, Value Proposition and Cost Structure are the parts of the canvas that dictates what the company does, sales to the customer, what value it is to the customer, how much it cost, and what is needed to get it done. The other four, Customer Segments, Channels, Customer Relationships and Revenue shows you who you are selling too, how you are reaching those customers, the relationship you have with your customers and the ways you are making money.
So now that I (we) have a clear understanding of what we do and offer, we can now bring about the science of branding it. This is where the brand identity prism is highly effective. A three-element brand identity prism created by Jean-Noel Kapferer consist of a rallying cry, capabilities and personalities, the one we used for class however, included four more, internal culture and values, shared values and community, noble purpose and aspirational self-image
(Hopelain). Knowing these aspects about your company will show you what you are selling or providing and how. So, in essence, the simple way to put is, plot the game, name the game, and BRAND the game.

Project Manangement - The new norm
In today’s market, the old world of marriage to a 9-5, keeping it traditional, and the saying, “if it ain’t broke, don't fix it,” are obsolete ideologies of the past that will leave your company in the past. Ask yourself, does anybody still shop at Toys R Us anymore? I probably just named a company you forgot about if your 25 + and never ever heard of if your younger. According to Gensler, the company filed a chapter 11 bankruptcy, being that it is 5 billion dollars in debt. If your my age (32), you must be asking yourself, how did a company that was the place to be when we were younger die out? Gary Vanynerchuk, 4 time New York Times best selling author, says it was a lack of innovation. Innovation drives company to change with the times, expand, and create new methods of reaching its customer base. What drives innovation would the next question. In my opinion, it is projects that drive innovation. For years Toys R Us never changed its formula or expanded its value for the customer. With the introduction of the internet and new ways to shop, consumer competition ate them alive. I mean why would you go to Toys R Us to shop if there isn't a need to, its cheaper online, and most importantly there isn't a WANT to. A steady stream of projects means a steady stream of new ideas, new ideas create innovation. Toy R Us lacked innovation. Instead of adding new features, programs and platforms to its company, it was consumed and taking over by the competition of innovative companies like Amazon, that made it easier for the consumer to shop. Projects are what turn ideas into something tangible for the company, and a product or service for the customer. Keeping this idea in mind, I will keep a steady stream of projects going for my company, taking advantage of the different methods of project management to educate and push my team forward into the boundless possibilities of innovation.
Shout out Dr. Frederick for giving me some of the best tools and knowledge I will ever use in life.
