ANNOUNCEMENT
These blogs (DivingFoxProductions, Butzefrau, and Halftone) are all retiring!
DON’T WORRY, we’ll keep being on Tumblr, we’re just moving so everything is better organized!
You can find my new main (fandom) blog at https://punkrockmxfrizzle.tumblr.com/
You can find my new art blog at https://illustratethestars.tumblr.com/
You can find my new art tutorial blog at https://10000sketchbooks.tumblr.com/
I’ll be following ALL THE SAME PEOPLE I was following before, and will start transferring/reblogging my posts, then will be moving all my activity to those new blogs. This is just to make my personal blogging much easier, and my interests clearer. :D Hopefully now it’ll be easier to interact-- and I’ll even try to tag things sometimes maybe!

I’m seriously considering deleting this Tumblr and remaking it so I have my primary/secondary business sorted out. Which would be so much easier if Tumblr would just make it so you can change your primary blog. :I Does anyone have ideas/opinions?

An art meme! With suggested palettes, as opposed to strict ones, and optional themes. Feel free to use, but please don’t repost!

things i did that forced me to be a better artist:
used a reference for everything
thinner line art (you think thats thin? go thinner….)
sketch, then do a cleaner sketch, THEN start finalizing
THUMBNAILS
color research, picking a set palette or light/dark for each work
you like that pose? redo it one more time
USE A DAMN REFERENCE
do not rely on stylization as an excuse for anatomy
draw the goddamn background you coward
just draw the hand- a bad hand is better than a hidden hand
the rule of thirds WORKS
take a considerable break between sketch and lines/paint
know that art takes longer as you get better at it
draw the seams on clothes
stop aiming for accuracy and focus on fluidity and motion, accuracy will come with practice of those two concepts
just…do the chiaroscuro. just DO IT. no excuses it always works
stop making excuses, make yourself an art schedule/set weekly(or daily) art goals and just DO IT.

here’s an old patreon reward to fill in the drawing-hiatus void a bit; something I get asked about a lot is the ‘acting’ in my comics and how to be subtle with conveying emotions. The answer is mostly experience and constantly observing people in real life to learn about expressions, but knowing when to ‘dial up’ or ‘dial down’ emotion is very important! context is king- this is basically the same advice that Carl Barks gave on one of his reference sheets here (in a much more succinct manner!):

Tea drinkers read this!!!
If you buy pre-made herbal tea blends (usually have names like Bedtime, Calm, etc) check the ingredients. I just saw a Nighttime blend that had St. Johns Wort in it, which can be dangerous when mixed with some medications. Talk to you doctor what herbs you should avoid. (Especially when you want to ingest st. Johns wort or mugwort)
A simple hint to remember is just because its in a food store, doesn’t mean its safe.

Some snippets from a Hat Drawing Tutorial I just posted to Patreon.  I may share it openly, eventually, but for now it’s available to all patrons, $1 and up!

Man I have never known straight dude writers to shy away from putting out stuff like ‘my thinly-veiled self-insert goes on a mediocre adventure but more importantly ends up in a love quadrangle with these four female characters who are all incredibly hot to me’, but most of the lady writers I know get nervous if they write one (1) love story where *gasp* two whole dudes compete for the same lady’s love!
So listen.
Listen.
Go out and give your warrior witch lady a magic talking panther that flies and five hot elf boyfriends (or girlfriends, or datemates, whatever) who all happily share her. Or fight over her. Whichever. Make each of them as smoking hot as you please. Indulge yourself. Live.
And this goes absolutely double for WoC and trans ladies and queer ladies and everyone else who has extra troubles with being shamed for your indulgence.
If you’re going to worry about stuff in your story it should be things like ‘is that trope racist?’ or ‘how do I fix this plot hole?’, not ‘am I putting in too many elements that I personally enjoy?’

Ok fine, here’s one thing to keep in mind when drawing armor. It should protect the character, not hurt them.

Tuesday Tips — Long Lines : one way to bring a pose “together” and simplify it in many ways, is to forgo the small choppy lines and go for long uninterrupted lines that move through the figure and connect its parts more seamlessly. Push strokes to their absolute limit instead of breaking it down too soon. You can always go back and make it more complicated if you like. Overall, long lines bring a kind of unity to most poses. -Norm @grizandnorm #tuesdaytips #100tuesdaytips #longlines #arttutorial #arttips
