i just had a random memory (well not really random since i was reminded of this memory by looking at a certain someone's pic) that back when i was in high school, my "friends" and i were at a nearby starbucks and i was just with them because i had nobody to hang out with that year.
starbucks used to be a big deal that year since a new one recently opened near our high school. out of curiosity and the fact that i was a starbucks virgin, i joined this group heading to this starbucks right after school.
so this really rich guy in the group bought everyone drinks. everyone except me. i asked him why he didn't buy me one and he answered by asking if there were any other friends i had who can buy me one or if i could just buy one myself. my allowance back then was enough for lunch and maybe a few snacks and that was it, i couldn't afford a frappuccino that guy bought for the rest of the group.
so i just told him i didn't have anybody else with me and i couldn't afford myself a drink so he just shrugged me off. i can understand why he's like that since we're not really close and it wasn't his responsibility to get me what i want.
then i just asked him if i could just take a sip from his drink since, again, at that time, i've never had starbucks before and he just made a disgusted face and shook his head. i asked my other "friends" if i could just taste their drinks as well and all of them also shook their heads. i know they didn't have to share me their drinks because maybe of hygiene reasons or just the fact that we weren't even close to begin with but i got really pissed off and just moved away from the group, but not too far away, i just sat on an unoccupied couch nearby which, hah, they had to sit on hard ass chairs and i got to sit on this comfy ass couch.
and then on the coffee table in front of me. i saw it.
a half-full mocha frappuccino left alone. (i assumed it was a mocha frappe since i was and still am a basic bitch).
i looked around me and searched for the owner of the drink. i waited for someone to pick it up and i looked for some belongings someone might have left to call dibs on the spot i was on. but nope, i was sitting on an empty ass couch with no indication that someone already took the spot. with nobody beside or in front of me nearby. with a half-full frappe at the coffee table.
so i had an idea, if nobody in the group would want to share me their drinks then some random customer who might have ran off would.
so i held the frappe with some napkins covering the already wet plastic cup, checked the straw if it's been chewed on (it wasn't, thankfully) and took a sip.
that was how i tasted my first starbucks. by drinking some random person's unfinished drink. that was how desperate i was to try starbucks. that was how desperate i was to fit in.
it tasted awesome (or at least to my 15 yr old taste buds anyway).
the group saw me and all started to exclaim "ew!" "gross!" "you could've just asked me to try mine!" and finally, the rich guy, "you could've just asked me to buy you one!"
i was like, nah guys, this is great, you don't have to worry about me! i can't remember if the guy apologized or not since i was too busy finishing this lonely mocha frappe. not really sure if it was mocha but meh whatever, i got my starbucks and that was that.
and so, that day was saved thanks to my pettiness and desperation!
