This blog will contain all evidences of research and development within my Divergent module. My main inspiration for this module is Palimpsest - something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. I want to focus on my own interpretation of palimpsest and how it has had an influence over my creative process and art works over the years. I feel that I tend to work in layers and multiples through many disciplines. I plan to explore a range of material including digital methods: painting, printing, textile, instillation, photography, projections and time-based works.

Evaluation
Throughout this module I feel that I have successfully explored Palimpsest and successfully investigated my own perception of it through exploring: artist, research images, projection work and different print processes. Through projections and printing I was able to develop a visual and conceptual understanding of my personal perception of palimpsest, through portraying imagery of layers including my personal indices. Meanwhile, this relating back to the original term of palimpsest connotation the act of writing, removing and writing on top of the same area. This was the same method I used during the process of creating my cyanotypes.
Also, realising throughout my module that light is my main source of material in all of my practical work. This is the reason why I felt it was important to include a symbolism of light in my final piece. Light was used in the process of all my printing methods and projection. I soon realised that the areas of light in my prints is what I was drawn to and is the reason why I became aware of the ritual that proceeds when viewing the prints and cyanotypes. See, Seek, Reveal, Find, Repeat and finally the realisation of Light.
The video connotates the ritual and successfully showcases my practical work enabling the viewer to experience the ritual for themselves.
Lastly, throughout the module I feel that I have been critically aware of conceptually analysing my work throughout. Although my intended finals failed i’m really happy with the alternative final I produced. I feel that it both explored my own Palimpsest and the conceptual understanding of the ritual paired with the experience of viewing my own Palimpsest.

Final Submission:
Timebased
My final piece to this module due to my others that were planned being unsuccessful. A video portraying the same aspect as the previous post however, one showing my prints and cyanotypes.
I felt that this was the best alternative to end this module. The video highlights the ritual of seeking to repeating and realising that light has been what I have been searching for. Light has been my main use, like a tool to create throughout this full module. My prints include the exposure of light, so do my cyanotypes and projections I experimented with earlier in this module.
The video connotates the ritual we repeat when we view a Palimpsest environment. One that is full of indices and layers.

Recreated development of new final due to failed attempts:
Earlier in my blog I talk about the desire to ‘seek’. When we look in a cluttered area we’re compelled to spend a longer time viewing the area than we usually would. Just like my prints, because their is so many objects portrayed in them and due to the small scale of them we are compelled to look at the print longer. I soon realised that their is a ritual we follow:
Seek, See, Reveal, Find.
This development video it a collation of my prints, meanwhile using text to highlight the ritual that we go through.

Intended final submission:
These are images of previous cyanotypes I done on paper with the same idea of what I would have created on the large callico piece!
I really hope this gives you an idea of how my final would be. I planned to have it lay on the floor as I felt it would be the most authentic to my concept. Like the metal scrap skip, I poured all my junk from my bag onto the sheet to create my own Palimpsest.

Cyanotype washed and ready to dry for my final install:
FAIL!!
So upset and frustrated after the long process of this due to its scale and my lack of familiarity with this material. Maybe my cyanotype god’s weren’t on my side today and the print just totally washed away. All I can say is that i tried my best and hope that I can still visually represent what I aimed to have as my final piece.

Carousel Projections:
Unfortunately after trying 4 different carousel projectors I was unsuccessful in getting any to work! Due to Covid delivering times are ridiculous and I was unable to return the one I had and order a new one in time for this deadline. Hopefully this is an idea I can carry through the my creative project module and I find a projector that works.

development from first round of prints from my initial image :
Inspired idea of old film roll due to the leaking ink proving a corrosive effect to the prints, earlier in this blog I discuss ideas of capturing small material in resin to expand the size through projection. This is why I have been creating small resin pieces through the entirety of the project to prove another aspect of ‘seek’. How we wish to enlarge the size for a closer look.

Resin and carousel projections on going development into creative project :
Since working from home I have had a lot of bother with the resin pieces not fully hardening. However, after a discussion with my tech lecturer we came up with a new ratio so fingers crossed this works! I will be using these as small sculptural developments in my creative project.

Vava Lau’s resin art. A still image that explore the use of light colour and transparency. I feel the piece almost looks paused in time. It’s fluid form sparks a sense of movement for me.

Light and Transparency as a tool :
As I come to the end of this blog I realise that every process I have used has involved light as a tool. screen printing includes the exposure of a UV machine. Cyanotype also includes the use of UV exposure and projection is created through light. Maybe light is my art?
As I prepare to project my resin slides in the carousel projector I have been thinking of the relevance of light and transparency and how the two will pair together. I feel that there is no better way to explore this other than using light to project them! Hopefully the process will be successful as i’ve had a lot of bother with trying to find a projector that works.

Blueprint:
Referring back to when I discussed the reoccurrence of the colour blue it reminded me of an old style blueprint of a building. Something(unless your trained in the sector) that is hard to read so you peer at it for ages investigating the small diagrams.

‘Seek’
The urge to find something.
Attempt or desire to obtain or achieve something.
This word is relevant throughout my whole project. It was the reason why I was drawn to the scrap heap in the first place! After a discussion with my lecturer we realised that my prints drew the viewers eye in because of the clutter of objects shown in the print. because the print is smaller the viewer takes longer to explore it due to it being harder to see.

Parker uses an array of materials and objects throughout this installation to visually represent her concept of an exploded view. It can be assumed that Parker has used objects/materials as her focal point in this installation. Parker has highlighted the importance of the objects/materials she as used. It can be understood that she has given them an opportunity to show their natural overpowering ability to capture the room. Through the use of light, we are drawn to a further three-dimensional experience out with the sculptural installation. Parkers expanded this piece through projection which can entice an expanded view of the artwork. This evidences that there is a broad perception of the relationship between objects/materials and people. It can be thought that an artist has the means to show the effects of objects/materials through their artwork. Artists like Parker create artworks that focus on the visual elements of objects/materials. As previously stated in this dissertation, artists too form attachments to objects and also use the objects to visualise their chosen concept behind their artwork.
Most people accumulate objects that do not provide a functional use for the person any longer, yet they are objects that cannot be thrown away.
Bellow is a quote I have analysed relating back to objects and why I was drawn to them and chose to use them to portray my own sense of Palimpsest.
“Where you store things you cannot quite throw away, like the attic, it’s a place where toys, tools, outgrown clothes and records tend to congregate.” (Tate Gallery, Cornelia Parker)
The above quote indicates that people tend to dispose of objects once their main functionality is broken. However, there are some objects we form personal attachments to even if their main functionality is no longer in use. For example, a kitchen utensil that is rustic, and that deformed that it no longer has any functional use. However, maybe it was previously owned by someone who has passed from our world to another and we see a reflection of the person in the object, therefor we cherish it forever.
We hide these objects out of sight but still cannot get rid of them completely. It can be thought that this is one of the main moments in which a person will disregard the importance of the functionality of an object and value the relationship and memories the object has offered them.
