JAKARTANS NEEDS ACCESS TO PARKS!!!!
Free time isn’t as fun nor productive when you don’t have many active options in the mix.
I miss the outdoors, open space and I sincerely wish my city, Jakarta, would have some weekend activities not centered around consumption... of stuff and high fat food easily reachable with a tap of a finger (via delivery) and by car. I read today here-> http://jakartaglobe.id/news/indonesia-spends-billions-of-dollars-on-obese-related-disease-report/ that “Indonesians spend between $2 billion to $4 billion annually to treat illnesses related to obesity, which is equivalent to between 8 percent to 16 percent of the nation's total healthcare spending.” Though the main culprit is poor dieting habits, encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle for all is PAR-A-MOUNT.
Progress of Healthy Food Options: Improving
Living in Canada has showed me that being health conscious isn’t just a fashionable hobby, it’s a way of life... cultivated by the previous generation, passed on to mine. Here... salads are perceived as fancy food for fancy people. For my pals in the northern hemisphere, it’s a lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Only recently restaurants have popped up selling healthier food in malls.
PLACES TO M-O-V-E (no I do not mean clubs): Close to 0
Jakarta heat... was the name of the hottest chicken wings at Wings CA. Yea, the weather is blistering hot. I visited a private open space last week and I couldn’t stand being out there for too long... there was no trees nor shade. I was disappointed because I thought I finally found an open space where I can take walks in, but alas, I don’t want to faint in the heat and the location was too out of the way anyway.
I get that this is a developing country. I had hope when I returned that things will change for the better, and I hope (sad I can’t say expect instead of hope) that the leaders of this city... and countries will create policies and progress that would be in the general public’s best interest. Improve Indonesians quality of live please.

Let’s try understand each other a little better.
In this political climate where hate, extremism, and intolerance is out in the open and spread like wildfire, people have been much more divisive about their stance on a of issues. This is due to the rise in political leaders worldwide outwardly making hate a large part of their platform. Understandably, people want to jump in on this hot topic and have their say. Well, not just people, but companies too.
We’ve seen this with Pepsi, who made an ad using what they thought was a winning formula:
Trending social issue (Black Lives Matter) + The “It” Millennial celebrity (Kendall Jenner) + Action in response to tension (The state of being WOKE via protest, dance, music, photography) + Racially diverse actors + Physical manifestation of conflict (the po po) + Their product (Pepsi can).
We’ve all watched the ad. We’ve also snickered at the memes that followed ;) Yeah, it’s bad. There are a lot of issues with this ad, but the biggest issue I have with it, is that it made a mockery of the Black Lives Matter Movement and Iesha Evan’s iconic stand against the police during the peaceful protest in Baton Rouge. People are already rolling their eyes at the fact that Pepsi was positioned as the suggested antidote to police brutality, and to think that a JennerKardashian (& her world peace in a Pepsi can) could convey the same power and effect that Iesha Evan’s had is just plain delusional.
So that’s one brand’s flop at tapping into this particular hot topic. Let’s see how Heineken did.
Their social experimental ad encouraged people who are “Worlds Apart” and have opposing views to sit, have a beer and #OpenYourWorld to each other. One takeaway is that we should all take time to talk to people who hold opposite views from our own in hopes of working towards a more accepting society. Great concept, and it totally works with this alcoholic beverage product as the social lubricant that may allow discussions like this to take place (though hopefully it won’t escalate to a bar brawl!).
Bad try, Pepsi and one thumb up to Heineken (though the “smash the patriarchy” sweater was a bit over the top).

Popularity on the Internet is still driven by the biggest broadcasts- not by a million 1-1 shares, but rather by a handful of 1-to-1 million shares.
“The Myth of ‘going viral’ on the Internet, by Derek Thompson
Talking about the parallels of “old” models like TV/radio broadcasts to “blast points” like a Kardashian post. This article snippet wants to believe in the democratic ideals that guarantees anyone fame and success if your content is good enough, but “in the end, virality is a David myth obscuring the fact that the Internet is still run by Goliaths” (Thompson, 2017).

On the importance of engaging with people who have differing views than your own- “The question you need to ask yourself,” he adds, “is the person willing to concede? Google Fortune Telling
The world obviously needs more empathy and Google’s approach was simple. By answering the obvious, we feel a little bit foolish. Additionally, it comes with a good lesson, which is to get us to do the bare minimum: think about other people, especially those who feel forgotten and abandoned by the rest of the world.

Visual Representation.
Calories. It’s something we should count, or at least keep in mind, but find it hard to do so because though it’s in everything we consume, it’s intangible. Here’s 2 videos that help us visualize the caloric make up of some of the food we eat on the daily. 3 cinnamon buns = 2k calories!? Oh western snackfood.

SoulPancake- http://soulpancake.com/
I have been a huge fan of SoulPancake since I was a tween (and since watching the office, Rainn Wilson as well), when it was just a forum where people came together and discussed life’s biggest, deepest questions. To this day, as a longtime fan and a self-identified member of the SoulPancake community, I am still excited for new content from them. It’s touching, heart wrenching, uplifting and hits you right in the feels. Their YouTube channel totally gets a KAY from dithakay.
This video is one of my recent favourites. About 2 strangers. About connection. About finding love via... a quirky social experiment. Give it a watch!

I realize that this is quite a somber ad to share as my first official post but I couldn’t stop thinking about it 2 days later. The audience is reeled in by a budding romance, but is completely disoriented by the shocking ending. Watch it. It’s pretty powerful.
