Convince me that you cannot wait to come back, that you prefer me to the sun. Tell me that you know how I fought for you. Your mother makes the days longer on purpose and I grow homesick in the absence of your body. Tell me that you chose me. That you love me. That you crave the dark.

Tbh I really just picture Zeus and Hera having one of those typical sitcom marriages where it’s like “yeah he cheated on me again and yeah I murdered that girl he slept with nbd just another day being married amiright” and Hades and Persephone are just sitting there with their healthy, committed marriage horrified like "uhm no??? Pls go to therepy???"

This is part of why I have such great affection for (the very flawed) Disney’s Hercules; the little details. I just love this shot, which lasts for all of about a second, where we see Athena, goddess of war and wisdom, patron goddess of Athens, giving her owl a sip of her martini. And I think that is just the cutest thing. I spent a good chunk of my college years obsessed with the animated spinoff from this movie, which does a LOT more with the mythological source material and is awesome for people who are familiar with Greek myths (and have a good sense of humor about it. They change a LOT.) But you see that pink one in the background there? No, the one behind cupid (he’s hitting on Psyche in the midground). Yep. That’s Persephone. She pops up again at the very end of the movie after Hercules earns his “godhood” back.

She’s got a sort of pink Sarah Brightman thing going on. And I always found it fascinating that the Disney people bothered putting Persephone in the movie to begin with… you know, considering who Persephone ends up with.

Apparently there was an episode of Hercules: The Animated Series that had a spin on the Persephone myth, but they canned it for some reason. This makes me sad, especially considering the animated series actually HAD James Woods in its voice cast for every episode he was in. I really would have loved to see what they’d have done with it, because there’s no way they’d have played it straight, and I love that idea. Another one to toss in the long, sad hall of missed opportunities!*

I’ll do an episode on Hercules: The Animated Series one of these days. It was unappreciated in its time, certainly far more than the movie. I have fond memories of it.

*Don’t get me started on the fanfics that try to tackle this. I remember them. They’re all bad. Like really, really bad.
