Tyrus Week (Day 4)

I wanted to draw something before the finale and this was the first karaoke song I thought of

so we’ve always known that tj kippen, captain of the basketball team, has never been embarrassed of his friendship with cyrus, a quote on quote “dork/nerd”

he leaves a friend mid sentence when cyrus calls him over

talks about cyrus to his dirt bike buddies

and now tj talks to cyrus intimately in public. even brushing his hand with cyrus’, where his friends and pretty much anyone can see

but he doesn’t care, because what he cares more than anything else is cyrus and their relationship and i think that’s fucking beautiful

how I want the bench scene to go down:

Cyrus: Can I sit?

TJ: Sure.

Cyrus: Cool party, right?

TJ: Yeah. I’m surprised you aren’t wearing a suit.

Cyrus: Well I only wear suits for really special occasions.

TJ: Like what?

Cyrus: Like saving you from the cold harsh consequences of breaking the law.

TJ: (laughs) I was so scared that I was actually gonna get kicked off the basketball team. I can't believe it was just lunchtime detention. Which I got through, thanks to you.

Cyrus: I wanted to be there.

(A pause. Then——)

TJ: Cyrus?——

Cyrus: ——TJ——

TJ: Sorry, you go.

Cyrus: Well, the trial actually got me wondering.

TJ: Yeah?

Cyrus: What’s your real name?

TJ: Oh! Um...

Cyrus: You don’t have to tell me! I just thought it was weird that I didn’t know it. As your lawyer, of course.

TJ: Oh, yeah. No, I just… I’ve never really told anyone before. It’s embarrassing. So just… don’t tell anyone else.

Cyrus: My lips are sealed.

TJ: TJ stands for… Terrence Jameson… Kippen… The Third.

(Cyrus is shocked.)

Cyrus: Wow, that’s your name? You really haven’t told anyone?

(TJ shakes his head no.)

Cyrus: That’s a great name! You have nothing to be embarrassed about, it’s regal!

TJ: It’s just not really me. I don’t fit into it.

Cyrus: You don’t need to fit into anything. You’re great the way you are. And I like TJ. …The name. I like the name TJ.

TJ: Thanks.

(There is a brief pause. Their hands are very close together.)

TJ: Is that why you came over? To find out my name?

Cyrus: No. I actually. I. Well, I came here to—

TJ: Underdog. I told you something. Is there anything you want to tell me?

Cyrus: Yes, actually. With the trial and Buffy’s game, and the golf cart, it seems like we’re okay, but we never really talked. About costume day.

TJ: Cyrus, I said I was sorry—

Cyrus: (talking faster now) And about the swings.

TJ: The swings?

Cyrus: Yeah. I saw you swinging with Kira.

TJ: I’m sorry.

Cyrus: I was probably deluding myself anyway.

TJ: What do you mean?

Cyrus: I just… I thought we had these special things. Somersault. The swings. Those were our things. But you did those with Kira. So she must be special to you.

TJ: You’re special to me. Those things with Kira— it was nothing. I told you I don’t like her like that.

Cyrus: But I like you. Like that.

(A stunned silence)

TJ: Oh.

Cyrus: Yeah.

(Another long silence. Only the sound of the fire.)

TJ: How long?

Cyrus: What?

TJ: How long have you liked me?

Cyrus: I don’t know. I can’t really pinpoint a moment it started. I guess it just grew and grew—

TJ: Because for me I think it was the muffin.

Cyrus: ...What?

TJ: I didn’t realize that’s what it was. But I think it started from the muffin. I just... liked helping you. And back then I didn’t like helping anybody. And then I came to the swings. And I didn’t really know why, I just wanted to talk to you. And then you helped me.

Cyrus: TJ—

TJ: And then I just wanted to be better. Because of you. You made me a better person even though I kept ruining things.

Cyrus: What are you saying?

TJ: (Deep breath, voice shaking ever so slightly) I like you too. Like that.

Cyrus: Oh.

TJ: Yeah.

Cyrus: (Again, this time beginning to smile) Oh.

TJ: (Also smiling) Yeah.

(Still smiling, both boys are a bit dazed. They stare into each others' eyes, but then look down, realizing a simple yet extraordinary fact—— they are holding hands.)
